  1. I actually wear Starter excercise pants/black of course to match the uniform...when I started, they were all I could find to fit me, now I just kind of stick with it because they are so comfy. as for my top, it's a traditional lightweight top that I usually wear with sleeves down, but yesterday we were giving a Nunchaku seminar so I rolled the sleeves to jsut below the elbow to keep them out of the way of the goofy foam chuks that I was using.
  2. Mr. Mike

    Fed up?

one of the girls up where I work found out that I teach karate, and she said, "Cool, you know karate? Karate that desk!" how the heck can you karate a desk?
  3. welcome! sorry, no backflip/spin kicks here either
  4. HOLY POST RESURRECTION BATMAN!! J/k great read though...thanks for bringing this one back
  5. I am about 6'1' and weigh about 285. I wasn't too impressed with my Tae Kwon DO skills...flexibility doesn't come easy for me. Kickboxing has worked well for me. I currently study/teach chinese kenpo and have almosst no problem with my size. So far, there is only one move that gives me problems, and that is a ball kick fake to high roundhouse combo...my heft makes it an ugly transition. Most of our kicks are below the belt. The footwork is simple enough, and most everything falls into place for me. It seems like this art is merely a continuation of my natural fighting style. welcome to the arts and good luck with whatever your choice.
  6. welcome, and I love the avatar!!! very cool!
  7. I don't have mine up yet, but will within the week...not sure of the brand, as it was my instructor's old one.
  8. whoo hoo!! PARTY TIME!! http://www.mardigras.org.au/Photos/MardiGras2004/Community/_images/thumb/c0156.jpg
  9. phew!!1 I was seriously starting to doubt the maturity of the board staff ok. You got me...funny, I never even thought to cinsider what day this was on. man, you got me.
  10. when my son cuts up, I tell him he is a black belt in dumb fu. How about this: You don't know much about the martial arts ifyou claim to have special training from a Master Wong in China(or master lee or li or chin or chun, you get the idea). When asked, always reply "they just retired...sorry I was his last pupil." My ex-wife's mom's ex-husband always claimed to train with the last Kenpo master alive...uhh...sure buddy...so I asked him what school he got his start in...would you believe he named the school that I teach at...sure, even said he teaches there I didn't even try to correct him, I just sat there and very mockingly exclaimed "WOW!!! THAT"S WAAYY COOL!! YOU MUST BE THE DEADLIEST GUY ALIVE!!!" He never caught on.
  11. there were many actors running to fill his place after his death. I have seen a couple of films from Bruce Li and Bruse Lee and of course Bruce Le. The all looked a bit different. None were as dynamic as the original, but they were all equally fun to watch once you got over the fact that they were trying to be Bruce Lee.
  12. for my money, I would have to go with Karate Champ...remember with the two joysticks? Full Point!! Then the bull runs at you!!!!
  13. I cannot agree with you more...some classes get tiring rather quickly..."inward block, ready, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6," ....and on and on and on... however, the lower belts need that kind of repitition... think back to when you were a white belt...didn't you need that repitition also?
  14. we don't have that requirement, but we should. I remember taking a chunk out of my instructor's head with a thumbnail...man, I felt bad for awhile. He jsut said that will teach him to block
  15. so, this was mostly for comedic or entertainment purposes, right?
  16. sauzin, that was one heck of a metaphor...I had to read it a couple of times to make sure it said what it did...but I'm fairly tired righ now, so there we go. well put at any rate.
  17. dippedappe: Art is KARATE Style is CHINESE System is KENPO http://www.karateconnection.com/history.htm Peruse the above for more info.
  18. The IKCA does a video curriculum, wherein you tape your belt test and send it to be reviewed by the grandmasters themselves. Many people fail. What they do not do is send you a black belt and tell you that you can wear it after watching the tapes. it still takes years even with the video curriculum to attain BB.
  19. most MA came about as a way for the smaller/weaker person to control the altercation. You generally don't find techniques that require brute strength or huge mass...that being said, you also shouldn't be a total ball of spam. You must condition the mind with training of all sorts, and condition the body in the same way. Wen Wu Xing. The way of the scholar warrior. Learn to be deadly with mind and body.
  20. we reccomend that students train in their shoes, and various types of footwear. We also have street clothes day(man, the day I wore my suit and tie just plain sucked), and train in the park that is two blocks away from the school, when weather permits. yeah, it's amazing how the dynamic changes from something as simple as moist grass.
  21. while I don't wish to debate the wellness of the XMA system, I can say that the creator, Mike Chat, never ever says that his is a fighting system...it's X-treme, hence the name...it is advertised as a gymnastic, competition based system. that said, it is to MA what etch a sketch is to art.
  22. whatever happened to just punching? Tell ya what, you go worrying about filling that hand with chi, and I've struck 8 times before the body hits the ground...chi or not.
  23. repitition is the key...even blues clues tells kids that... remember, practice doens't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. if we didn't need practice, we would all be legends due to that fact that we could move on to new material after just seeing it once...this isn't matrix.
  24. I just bought a black frog button outfit like the one that Mr. Lee wore in most films...you can buy them at most martial arts suppliers and some asian stores. I got mine at https://www.asianideas.com for $29. As for the yellow suit, I saw one somewhere and thought it would be cool to have, but not for me...I am 6'1" and go about 280...not the same effect. I think that suit was just a generic excercise suit from that era...try ebay maybe?
  25. Good luck. I used to be at the Presidio. Man, I miss the sea lions
