  1. Glad to have you back, ive recently started posting again after a break as wel... Good luck with your training and i really hope your passion finds an outlet through a quality school and instructor...
  2. ocdavis - which master do you study under? And which Chang Hon Set do u practice [i.e. the encyclopedia has about 20 revisions, some with different patterns] ITF is less rare in teh UK, there are quite a lot of medium - good ITF dojangs around... but i agree as a federation we are quite spaced out. WTF - sparring requires "shocking impact" to score points - if you do a search onthis thread there are some posts on teh specific rules and how teh points are defined and legal / illegal techniques... ITF officially spars [as in encyclopedia] semi contact, but there are a few dojangs ive trained in that emphasise that this isnt always enough and train full contactregularly, but these are quite rare. As for competition, since the rule sets are different its difficult to say which is better, ITF has the advantage of using its hands more [not saying WTF doesnt use hands, just we train more in it] - but WTF concentrate more on sparring than ITF in-day-to-day training... ive sparred one of the junior olypiad american squad [wtf, age 19 i think - my age as well] and fared ok, but i train more in sparring than most ITFers... its more down to what you learn in your classes more frequently than the art.
  3. 65 edition - with handwriteen foot notes - the techniques are applications of tkd style, not part of a move set or instruction... there is no TKD theory to go with how one should deal with ground work, or grappling opponents.... i do know better, i own 3 separate editions of the 15 volume encyclopedia set he wrote.
  4. I dont know where you got the first part of your information from, but let me just explain a couple of things as i see them (so IMHO): there is a limited supply of energy in the universe (and by this i odnt mean it is running out)... and unless we're getting into zero point energy theory, which unless you have a physics degree adn phd is relatively pointless, the body does not produce enough energy to provide stimulus for many of the claimed effects of chi / qi / whatever.... if anyone cares for the numbers i am happy to post them here in the open forum [i.e. not by pm] but they are quite long [1.5 - 2 pages A4]; The energy the body produces and contains is actually [on scale] relatively low, also - the body provides no energetic mechanisms for transferring this energy in any way other than internally for homeostasis.... In response in general to your information - you make many factual [and true] statements, but do not relate them logically to qi, and state statistics without source.... Like i said im happy if you can provide statistics that diabets (type I or II) have reduced symptoms, that sounds great, but I'd like a statistic source, rather than analogous information.... I'm honestly trying to get a clearer view, not argue with anyone here, just trying to take a logical approach to it. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  5. yeah from now on ill be replying to that thread unless something comes up here that evokes an interesting thought
  6. ...think that was a bit harsh shorinryu sensei!!.... tkd never has been bout all that, but maybe ur just joking, dunno... either way, originally TKD started with NO ground work at all.... anything that exists now has been added by specific styles.
  7. i think that a certain style being "redundant" is a bit of a harsh thing to say. Im not WTFs biggest fan, nor am i 100% pro ITF even though its my first style.... I can honestly say, that ideally yes there would be 1 martial art that was ideal.... but there never will be, and so long as people are smart about what they chose to do, the more choice the better...
  8. it depends on teh gym and teacher really.... trained 3 different places, 1 allowed all blows irrespective of pads and elbow/knee restrictions, whereas 1 enforced pads until you were "senior" then it was choice....
  9. "if u sit by the river long enoug the bodies of your enemies will float by"
  10. why not.... is that just a general statement, or there some verifiable truth to it?
  11. remember, with lineage, a lot of people say different things... not everything being documented so well means a lot of history esp in the MAs is convoluted...
  12. a quick stab in the chest works wonders
  13. its also possible if the fingers are angled down sloping away from the knuckles, such that all the force acts through the knuckles and through the wrist, rather than turning hte fingers into the palm...
  14. from personal experience (recently joined a wu shu class but have a good time in tkd experience, and quite a bit of MT as well).... the wu shu class spar every lesson and the juniors are paired with black belts to show them the ropes, now in this situation id tell who i was sparring that i have some experience and that ive done a lot of sparring work, as this is only fair.... as for telling the instructor - he should notice anyway, and it depends how similar the styles are....
  15. personally, id just leave it, let him think what he will, and walk away... just remind him not to try poaching ur students.
  16. 10 forms colour belt, 10 1 steps, 8 2 steps, 10 1 steps, 5 custom 1 steps, free sparing like 6 or 7 different times, breaking, 3 more patterns at black belt.
  17. nice to know that people get the surprise on people like that... but sounds liek the kid actually wanted the fight, and if he was "round-housing to the head" then i assume he has some martial arts training.... is it right then to go off and decide to, when challenged, go and "scrap it out", im not saying if they attacked him and he defended himself thered be anything wrong... just that he went off with them with the idea of beating them up in mind.... ?
  18. i think what gives it away is. "TOPSECRET" in the name... you know, like they're trying to show how secret it is.... sort of a bit of a contradiction,.... id stay away.
  19. just as a side point... i havent posted here for ages as i got sidetracked with various other things... but this has been a sort of pet topic of mine to date, qi and the like... To clarify something... E=mc^2... is actually only the first part of the whole equation, but is used to describe how in an inertial frame of reference with no kinetic energy or momentum, that something may begin to move with no external forces acting upon it.... thats really all its for, nothing special there really... Secondly, the idea that the brain can somehow manipulate the harmonics of matter honestly doesnt make sense to me... im not trying to say anyone is wrong here, but still let me just work this through out loud : If matter is as has been stated the energy vibrating at a certain frequency (and yes in some circumstances this is a MODEL that can be used... see Particle / Wave Duality of Matter for more info if ud like), and you assume that our brain is (as it is matter) made of these vibrating energy "strings", what would give rise to the assumption that these strings manipulation and interaction with each other are affected in anyway by the human thought processes, conscious or subconcious? It just doesnt seem to follow logic.... why would it be possible? what is the grounding for it? In any case, im not denying the existance of qi/chi/whatever, just asking those who believe to explain what they see as the truth... thanks in advance for your replies.
  20. spinning back kick, land reverse palm heel, inward reverse knife hand strike
  21. just remember economy of force doesnt mean using the least force in a single blow to end things.... just using the least necessary force overall.... generally most attacks / defenses are more effective with a setup [jab - cross]..... which would be more "efficient" in at least one light than a single cross as it is more likely to be effective..... economy is about overall efficiency and likely outcome....
  22. twist back up onto feet.... elbow drop hehe.
