Uechi-Ryu is commonly grouped with Naha Te because of the circular stepping, breathing and lack of kiai, but Uechi Ryu was brought directly from China with no influence from Higaonna, Miyagi or Matsumura (shuri te) and was not developed anywhere near Naha. When listed in the official publications of Okinawa Uechi Ryu stands as a separate style with no association to any of the former "Te" groupings.

I believe they can be a good reference to suppliment your training, but nothing replaces hands on with an instructor and interaction with others in the dojo.

In Uechi-Ryu the feet should be exactly shoulder width apart and the heel of the forward foot should be inline with the toes of the rear foot and angled out at a 45. then you drop the hips and press the knees toward eachother. If you are doing a proper Uechi-ryu sanchin dachi it should protect the groin from the front and rear. In black belt testing in okinawa this is tested depending on the instructor doing the hitting.

In Okinawa it is pretty much standardized throughout the island with some exceptions. A Kyu test will run between $30-$60 depending on the rank. Shodan and nidan are $200 and increases by $50 for every dan above that. For example 5 dan would be $350. I have been in Okinawa/Japan for 18 years. Never heard of someone not charging a fee for a belt test.

All of Kansei sensei's sons do Karate. Although the oldest two have passed away. You will find all their pictures in the kyohon.

Uechi hiroyasu is the cousin of Uechi Kanmei. He is the 5th son of Uechi Kansei. He has been running Nago Shubukan for about 14 years now. I have been training with them since 1987.

A lot of Kyokushin schools here in Japan also wear some pads and do a lot of mirror fighting without contact. Most only spar hard once or twice a week. The body can only take so much punishment. As you condition your body you can step up the contact, but here even the "well known" fighters dont go at it everyday. It benifits no one to get hurt and miss training all together.

I would agree it refers to a place in Okinawa. It is also referring to a place in Japan as it is a Japanese word and has the same meaning in both areas. It is not a word that refers strictly to martial arts. It loosely translated means " the highest" in an area. So the SOKE in martial arts refers to the highest ranking dojo in that style. It is a little different than the word HOMBU which basically means headquarters. I was a little unclear of the exact difference so I called Uechi Hiroyasu sensei, the grandson of the founder of Uechi-ryu, to get his interpretation.

here in Okinawa the word SOKE is used to designate the headquarters dojo of an association. Some styles use the word HOMBU. In the Uechi Ryu Karate Do Association. Futenma dojo is reffered to as simply SOKE.

an official 10th dan can be awarded to an individual by two organizations in japan. The all japan karate federation and the all okinawan karate association any other way is not acknowleded or respected. Most 10th dans are eventually awarded one from both organizations. There is a third way: the government of japan can bestow this on an idividual that is considered a national treasure for their dedication to the martial arts.
