  1. "Doctorate in Martial Arts Philosphy" Haha what next?? That is just amasing!! Who decides what is right? Does that mean if you agree with their philosophy you get a masters degree? Haha
  2. It is said Bruce Lee was a great martial artist. How good he actually was was never tested. Some claimed he was the best in the world. But thats very hard to prove when he never fought all the top MA in the world. Yes he was promoted by many top USA MA but to me that is not enough to determine he was the best. He did many good looking things on screen, but then again any competent MA can do the same. As for his philosophy I dont buy it, then again I dont buy any modern psycho-babble either.
  3. Download for free, the Winmx file sharing program https://www.winmx.com Under video search for bruce lee
  4. Have a look at this: "Running, Karate and Peak Performance" http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=18320
  5. Please buy this book. Its the best book for systematic training I have ever seen in 41 years of involvement in MA. Using the systems will help you develop incredible power and you dont need weights or equipment, just your body. "The Underground Guide To Warrior Fitness" - By Ross Enamait http://www.warriorforce.com/warriorfitness.html
  6. Rest from training is as important as training
  7. Your tiredness from work could be for many reasions. Perhaps not enough sleep, bad diet or stress? Either way, if you are going to take anything before training, have a small glass of water 20 minutes before. Assuming you have a normal bladder. I have been guilty of taking caffiene tablets years ago to get my sleepy mind right for training. I dont need to do that these days
  8. Getting big muscles takes a hell of a lot of work and a very long time. Its a misnomer to say weights automatically build big muscles. They don't. So use weights, running and eat properly and you wont go wrong
  9. Weights will not necessarily help you build up to do 100 pushups. I know guys that can bench press 300 lbs and yet they cannot do 100 pushups... why? They are used to doing between 8 and 12 reps. Pushups are also an endurance exercise. 100 pushups are a good goal but learn variable pushups. I feel the best pushups are the plyometric ones that you push yourself off the ground and land back down again. Thats power
  10. For me personally its not useful. My training demands running that is rather unusual. It includes: Steady state Pacing Fartlek Sprinting Agility exercises included. The purpose of my running for the most part is to develop anaerobic capability. For example some mornings I will follow this programme called Pyramid system: 4 mile run steady state in 24 minutes Sprint 800 metres 50 burpees Sprint 600 metres 50 pushups Sprint 400 metres 50 burpees Sprint 200 metres 50 pushups Sprint 100 metres 50 burpees This type of sequence is designed for anaerobic capability and explosive power. Its grueling training. I couldnt do that on a tread mill. Besides running outside is rather nice. I dont not run because of the weather. I run no matter what the weather is. One can buy an all weather water proof running suit which is excellent. Fighting the weather is easier than an opponent who you may have to face one day.
  11. Always keep an eye on your rear view mirrors. Some people sneak up behind you. Haha Seriously .... watch the face and your peripheral vision will pick everything else up
  12. Pain can be productive and pain can also be an indication of over training. Too little or too much training is not good. You have to find that correct training level. I feel, only by over training can one find the optimum level. Then you just tone it back a little. You have to experience both sides and every body is different. I have to be careful. My enthusiasm and will makes me tend to over train. I have trained myself so hard at times, I have had to lay in bed for a whole week from muscle pain and sheer exhaustion. I was nearly hospitalised once. But as I got older and more mature in the art, I have learnt what my person levels are. Pain can be a friend but it can also be your worst nightmare. I have seen many teachers who untrain and turn out poor students and I have also seen teachers that ignore over training and drive their students to unworkable levels. Training a student so hard that they have to rest for days or a week afterwards just doesnt make sense. The best way to train is to train to your personal optimum level and often you will not be able to do that at a school
  13. Even in my self training I often do 1,000 repetitions of one technique per side. Our school is just as brutal
  14. The guy would die in our school. LOL
  15. Fundamentalist Christians would freak about that idea LOL But Philippians 1:12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 1:13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 1:14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. 1:15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 1:16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 1:17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 1:10-17 1:18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
  16. An untrained man simply cannot compete with a "properly" trained man. In the same way a 3 cylinder Daihatsu car cannot compete with a formula one grand prix car. Theres no contest. A untrained man: Is physically slower Lacks power Lacks co-odination Lacks mental speed Lacks skills Lacks speed and co-ordination in body movement/eye/brain reaction time Lacks endurance Lacks explosive power And so many other things. Would you want to have a sprinting race over 100 metres with the worlds best? Of course not, I wouldnt. Its exactly the same thing. I am not talking about beginners, but someone who can be described as "properly trained" In my younger days I got involved in back street bare knuckle boxing (illegal bouts). The trained man never loses. Arrogance, temper and aggression will not see an untrained man through a real fight... period.
  17. Do people punch differently today? Do people kick differently today? Did people in the past have more or less arms and legs than we do today? Exactly how its it different?
  18. 3 hours daily training is not unreasonable. It all depends on your physical condition. I have trained 3 hours per day for years. This includes early morning running/training and late afternoon or evening Karate training or other types of training. You have to build your body for peak performance. You must, I mean must, buy this training manual, study it and apply it and if you build the training outlaid into your current training schedule you will soon rise to the top. http://www.warriorforce.com/warriorfitness.html "This bodyweight exercise program will blast your strength and endurance to new levels. This book is loaded with intense routines that do not require equipment. These routines are guaranteed to challenge the most elite athletes. You will not find a more complete bodyweight exercise program". The book was written for boxers, MMA's and Martial artists. Its top notch stuff!! As for studying two martial arts I think its a bad idea. Pick one and then set this as your skills training schedule and spend the rest of the time following the program in that book. Of paramount important to the martial artist, apart from actual MA skills is: Proper nutrition Anaerobic endurance training Aerobic endurance training Speed training Strength training Explosive power training Balance training (often over looked) Flexibilty training Agility training Proper rest To have a balanced training programme you would not have time to study two MA schools. For all the a Martial Artist's needs, one style/school is suffice. Become a Master of One, rather than a "jack of all trades". Some seem to think that one style is not enough. That's a crock. Utterly master everything within one style then you "might" be qualified to review that position. Today people dont seek mastery, they seek a quick fix and there isn't one. With 3 hours training a day, you will approaching high calibre technique and power. Very soon you will find training at a school extremely easy and in some cases maybe even limiting. I train about 21 hours per week and have maintained this for about 15 years or so. As for my actual Karate skills training schedule, I do about 10-12 hours per week. The rest are all exercises of varying kinds to develop my needs as listed above. Everything I do apart from MA skills is directed at developing my MA skills. Properly done supplementary exercises have a truly profound, deep-seated and intense effect on the MA-ists capabilities. Training in a martial alone is good, but if you are seeking super performance for what ever reason, maybe for contest, maybe for street fighting or maybe just for the hell of it (as n my case), then you need a very intense physical program. This is how I see it after 41 years of training and of course I submit this opinion with a qualification that this is my humble opinion
  19. Train as hard as you can .... daily
  20. I would like to have studied under Azato, Itosu, Matsumura (x2), Aragaki, Higaonna, and also a Gladiator training school
  21. There has been an error in the spelling. The correction is: Grandmaster Villan
  22. Squat jumps with dumb bells and step ups
  23. Any kind of load while training is good, as long as it is safe. I tried ankle and wrist weights years ago but it put undo stress on my knees and elbow's. Today I use normal weights
  24. Aerobic work is great for basic conditioning, but a fighter must, absolutely must include anaerobic work. The sheer nature of combat requires anaerobic capability.
  25. Never had that problem myself. Best to see a doctor
