i see what you are saying but i am afraid that maybe i was misunderstood. i dont use kata to relax in fact there are many ways that you should train your kata. sometimes you are trying to figure out bunkai so you are thinking and trying to breakdown the kata to a self defence move. and yes other times you are going much deeper trying to feel internal things such as zanchin and muchimi, and ect. my point is that you should know the kata so well after years of training that your body takes over and you dont have to think "is my shoulder back" or whatever. -

yes killermiller I think stated that very well the Japanese spen time teaching these philosophies and they certinally work to calm the body. It is very difficult to explain I believe that it is like being totally limp and tight at the same time. you should be totally loose but like a cocked gun ready to go off at any time.

YES. to all of the things you listed. If you are concerned with your instructor ask him about his training who did he train with, what orgnization and so forth. If he is reluctant to share this info. watch out.

what else?????????

sometimes you can slow or stop someone from attacking by attacking them but dont rely on it. you should never have the mind set of ok now im going to attack or now im going to block, this is a very hard concept to put into action but just react. Try NOT to anticipate because this will slow you down. try to just use your centrifical vision to see your opponents whole body and just go for it. practice make perfect and getting hit while sparring is not a bad thing, learning how to take a punch is as important as giving one. good luck.

yeah im not going to lie i train very hard often several hours a day but only once in a blue moon do i really feel the kata flowing threw me, its like im not doing the kata my body is doing it im not thinking at all, thinking is bad. -
welcome it sounds like you have had some really good training i look forward to seeing your posts.
-
ha ha i really like #2 im gonna have to remember that

yes a agree with some of the other posts if the judges know what they are looking at and sanchin is preformed well then you certinally SHOULD be given a reasonable score. But in tournaments today it seems that you have to be a gymnist to place, you should look for a really traditional tournament to compete in if you wish to do sanchin. Good luck.

sometimes but i will be the first to admit not often. -
a cool fact about this kata and goju is that in goju there is not a particular pregression of kata in a line but rather in a circle with no kata being less or more important (with the exception of sanchin) and I have a sensei in Japan that recently told me that the Goju-kai which is the leading authority of all goju-ryu have just recently made this kata a black belt kata. So it is a very important kata. Also did you know that Myiagi invented this kata?

yeah you can buy them at any hardware store, typically people break using 1/2 inch pine boards that are about one foot long.
-
after the secound knife hand strike we step back with the left foot into a zenkutzu dachi with right for forward pull both arms back by the side and punch with both arms leg on top, then step up with left leg then back with right leg while doing a mawashe uke pulling both arms back then out with right arm on top. Is that what you are asking about??
-
you bring both arms to the right side??
-
it sounds pretty much similar to what I do. If there are any particular questions i would be happy to do my best to answer them.

hello, im not sure what muscles exactly are used in these punches but another good way to train is with cords. Im not sure if you have seen people do this but you can buy exercise cords that are often used in aerobics and wrap it around a tree/pole or whatever and have one end in each hand. You should be far enough away that there is tension when you punch, you should have to push but still try to go as fast as you can, and dont forget to snap the punch back with all of the tension your snap back should be really really fast, this is also a good way to improve your snap. But yeah you should try it and see what you think. Good luck.

yes i do traditional karate, I dont really get into the torunament aspect and neither does my sensei. We do lots of Kihon (basics),Kata, bunkai, and kumite.

hello everyone out there in internet land

hello me its me again -
well put angela, why can you not use games to sharpen skills????? I am from a very traditional school and when we are traing very young people you cannont expect them to stand in the same spot and do basics for two hours. You have to mix things up and keep them interested and if you have to trick them into training hard by using games then go for it. Were dealing with children here now of course my teacher is not going to hurl a dodge ball at me during a kata........... wait a minute why not?? It would probably sharpen my skills so who cares how you get better. Oh yeah the sprained ankle............... sorry but dodge ball is much safer then three quarters of the other stuff that we do to train.

Whats with tournaments nowdays???
gojuchad replied to gojuchad's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yes mark i agree with you. white tiger wrote.... I have never seen a tournament where 'the flash' and traditional go head to head. There is room for both in my opinion. Tournaments are for fun. People take them way to seriously (I know I used to). Enjoy them...network with other martial artists. No need to cut down people who don't do what you do. I am certinally not trying to cut down people. But doing these type of things in what are suppose to be ma tournaments in my opionion we are sending the wrong signal not only to the upcoming children but also to people who are interested in ma's. At a martial art tournament in my opinion you should do martial arts.
