get a 1 inch thick, 12x12 pine board. Put it between two cinder blocks that are on the floor (with the woodgrain pointed towards you). Do a hammerfist. It should crack and break easily. you break it with physics... F=MA. Your body weight, the speed you can throw it... oh, and aim for the floor. this should be stupid easy to do as it's probably the most basic break you can do. If you do anything other than this, you could hurt yourself (as really it's the speed and technique that make the physics easy)... but a 1 inch board is not difficult to break. If you can do one board, then next try 2... then 3, etc... technique and speed.

But this isn't how I wanted to fight!

I have a question (and I don't know anything about grappling so tell me where this wouldn't work if it wouldn't), at about the :25 second mark of that clip, wouldn't an elbow to the back of the head/neck (of the grappler) been a good thing? He has that arm wide open at that point, and he's grabbing for his shoulder... couldn't he have made him pay at that point? just a thought... or question. nice clip, btw. -
F = M*A Force = mass times acceleration... simple physics. The bigger you are and the faster you can throw your weapon, the more force you will generate. The nice thing about this is you can increase your speed, and keep the mass the same and generate power, or you can increase your mass, keep your speed the same and increase power. or you can do as someone else mentioned and do both, and really increase your power. You can be muscular and still be flexible. Just make sure if you add muscle you keep full range of motion.

Differences in Basic Fighting Stance

We're taught to keep it up and protect the face. Like someone else said, gravity is your friend (it's easier to go down that to go back up). I see a lot of people get hit in the face when the don't... I'd rather get hit in the stomach... or not at all actually -
Class Prices
Jinxx0r replied to oscar2010's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Me and my son both train in soo bahk do. It cost us $60/month for both of us. With that you can basically go to any class you want to (which there are two 1 hour adult classes per day, Monday through Friday). You can attend as many classes as you want to but you have to attend at least 8 classes per month if you want to advance at a normal rate. Our shool also has specialty clinics on the weekends such as specialized self defense training, weapons classes, advanced forms, etc. There are 160 active students in the dojang I train in. https://www.soobahkdo.com -

My definition of Martial Arts: A five thousand year old argument on whose teaching method of middle punch and block is better... -
LOL 1) All the time... 2) Yes, I could use hypnotherapy to help me stop for awhile, since it's an obsession.

IMO = "In My Opinion" MA = "Martial Arts" IMHO = "In My Humble Opinion" AFAIK = "As Far As I Know" LOL = god, I hope you know this one. uhhh... what others? there are many acronyms in the world (what you are asking for are acronyms, not abbreviations... they are different things). Saint = St. Tuesday = Tues. Are abbreviations (as in, shortening of a single word)... not to nitpick.

What motivates you to train

fun, fitness and self defense. -
Training, and then that thing that exceeds it.
Jinxx0r replied to Hudson's topic in Health and Fitness
I suppose if I had to train as if I were constantly defending my life, then I guess I would train to extremes... in today's world, you'll be lucky if you ever use your skills (let alone having to defend yourself constantly). JMHO -
chuck norris's martial art, is it any good
Jinxx0r replied to dear john's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
you should call Chuck and ask him... -
saying the suburbs may be pushing it a little (just listed Chicago cause it's the closest big city), but I live in Bourbonnais, which is about 40-50 miles south of Chicago. Used to live and go to school in the Joliet area (but grew up further south). I see the interchanges for Aurora every day on my way to work (work in the NW suburbs, long drive)

Help me prove someone wrong

The Moo Duk Kwan is an organization (and a philosophy), not a style. The style, or art, is Soo Bahk Do or Tang Soo Do (I think Tang Soo Do has their own organization). correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how it's been taught to me (I train in Soo Bahk Do, but learn the philosphy of the Moo Duk Kwan). *shrugs* maybe it's just semantics. -

wow... I'm in the category of not knowing enough to know that I don't know. -
Just because there are black helicopters flying outside of my window every 15 minutes doesn't mean I'm paranoid... THERE THEY GO AGAIN! oh, just a truck... nevermind.

Martial Artist or Sportsperson?
Jinxx0r replied to Dijita's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nobody can tell you if you are or are not a martial artist... that comes from you. A tournament gives you opportunities to demonstrate your skills, help get rid of stage fright and help your confidence level in front of strangers. IMO, the guy is full of #$^#$% but that's just MO. -
buy a book on kendo... this one is pretty good (I have this one at home): http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=O24Vs5FAbR&isbn=4770021194&itm=1 and then get an instructor who can teach you (like someone else mentioned). Unless of course you instructor also teach sword.

* That feeling of hitting the heavy bag with good, solid technique. You don't always do it, but when you really throw a good technique. * The light feeling you have when you finally, REALLY know a form and it feels effortless, strong and correct. * The feeling you get when you slip on the ice, fall on your behind, look around and realize nobody saw you do it...

chuck norris's martial art, is it any good
Jinxx0r replied to dear john's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I had heard that it only took him a year learn what he needed to test for cho dan. Do you know if this is true? I had read that all he did was train for that year. ouch. -
Everytime I tell my doctor, "Hey, it hurts when I do this", the tells me to not do that... heh. RICE (Rest, Ice Compression, Elevation), after a week start doing some easy shoulder stretches/weights. I want to stress light weights (very light weights) and range of motion excercises. - Lat raises - arm circles - Front raises Do easy sets of these. You want to feel a burn, but not a burden. If you feel pain with these, you should see a doctor. After you've done this for about 3-4 weeks without pain, ease back into a normal shoulder/bench workout. If you still have pain after this point, you need to see a doctor as you may have something structurally damaged. I can't stress enough that you need to use light weight for this.

I don't weight train on the days that I'm going to a lesson. You risk overtraining and injury if you do so. I would recommend weight training in your "off" days, with light/easy stretching early before your training days. This is what I do and it seems to work out well for me... but opinions will vary.

I asked my instructor and he told me that there isn't an excercise for your abdomen that can protect the solar plexus (and that's why it's such an effective target). You're stomach muscles don't cover the area as there is nothing really there to move in the first place. *shrugs* I have a pretty strong stomach, but shots to the SP always seem to still take my breath away. Just what I was told (and personal xp)

You're body needs rest at some point (or it's diminishing returns and potential injury). You're body will tell you when you need to stop. Rest is often overlooked. People think you're not gaining when you're resting, which is just wrong. You're body repairs itself and gets stronger when you get proper rest. You will gain faster if you do it evey other day... just make sure you do good sets.
