Perhaps you should also urinate on her. That would make your ownership of her more clear, and prevent others from invading your territory. Seriously, I'd be absolutely revolted if a guy I was with responded to a silly off-color thing like that with violence. Especially if the guy was a martial artist; frankly, I'd just expect a little more maturity and a LOT more self-control. Defending your woman if she is physically threatened and cannot defend herself is one thing; beating people up and squirting testosterone all over the place in defense of her honor is just silly. -
I've always wanted a convertible too, but don't like any of the ones they're making these days (not a car person, wouldn't want to deal with a really old one). For now I've got my trusty honda civic, and like KickChick I somehow managed to become a minivan owner. Fortunately there are a only couple of dogs in the back, no human children for me!

How do you guys decide how much you should weigh to meet your goal?? (That's directed at the weight gain people, by the way; I understand it the other way.) I want to increase my strength and certainly wouldn't mind seeing more definition, particularly in my upper body, but how would I go about translating that pounds to gain? Or is this really more for people who specifically want to 'bulk up'? Sorry if these are bone-headed questions, I've been struggling towards very vague goals (i.e. "become stronger") and kind of like the idea of having a number to work towards.

The important question is, now that Joe and Blade are breakdancing , will I finally be able to find freakin' straight-leg pants again? Last year I went to pick up some sweats and even THEY were bell-bottoms! I guess the way things are going they'll all be cut like parachute pants now.

Heh heh, I got a big 49 wpm...people sometimes comment on how incredibly fast I type when they hear me going, unfortunately tests like these see that every third key I hit is the backspace.

'kay, I can accept that. And I'd definitely rather be hot than tear muscles. But what if you don't tend to sweat much, does that make you more prone to heat exhaustion? The other night we had a pretty tough workout and I was stuck in front of that heater which was going full blast the whole session, I was really having problems. I don't seem to sweat much compared to most people, I drink lots of water regularly, was wondering if there's anything I can do to make my body regulate its temp better. Kind of different topic from KickChick's reply: I always associated the desire to burn calories with the desire to lose weight. If you don't want or need to lose weight, is there some other motivation for burning more calories? Thanks for your responses, by the way. Phew, training at 72 degrees sounds like paradise. We're outgrowing our current location and hopefully moving soon, with a little luck the new place will have a heater that blows anywhere other than directly on ME!

I'm a West Wing fan, that's about the only show I watch on a regular basis these days.

Exactly what do the remaining 11% do?? Yup, I read. And I firmly support the "over the top" stand on the placement issue, as should everyone (with the possible exception of households containing cats who enjoy unrolling things). Judging by the MA Goofs & Blunders post, I think Gloi should be considered the expert on MA training in the bathroom... [ This Message was edited by: chh on 2002-03-12 10:33 ]

Sorry I'm not following the proper format for this thread, but this seemed relevant... http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/columnists/dave_barry/2822019.htm

Check out the link I posted on page 1, along with Sai's posts, that pretty much covers your basic outdoor homegrown makiwara. For more, just plug 'makiwara' into your favorite search engine. You can buy the wall-mounted indoor makiwaras for as little as 20 bucks in MA supply stores, lots of people consider them as having incorrect resistance and/or being too soft but lots of other people disagree. For lots more money you can get nice indoor ones, see link below--with this example you'd have to buy/make your own pad, and if you don't have a place you want to permanently mount it you'll have to build a platform for it. Hope this helps! http://www.iskf.com/marketplace/makiwara.htm [ This Message was edited by: chh on 2002-03-11 13:10 ]

At our (very small) dojo there aren't scheduled test days when everybody tests, you get tested when Sensei sees you're ready. If nobody else is ready then you test alone. Also, 1 night a week we have an advanced class, which doesn't mean a whole lot since we're pretty much all beginners, but the class is never toned down to the lowest common denominator like the regular classes sometimes are. New people can attend, but either work on more basic stuff or sit out while we focus on advanced techniques & sparring. Anyway, it might be worthwhile to suggest an advanced class to your instructor? I think I learn a lot from watching the beginners' early accomplishments and do not feel like I'm being held back by training with them, but I do highly value that advanced class where we always train hard and learn new things.

Seems like kind of an odd question, strange motivations. Can you just pick something that sounds exotic and instantly believe in it? I agree with Singularity, if you're serious about this then you're going to have to do some research and find something that makes sense to you. Read, talk to people of various religious flavors, attend their gatherings, keep an open mind. Maybe in the end you'll take different aspects that you like from each religion you study and form unique beliefs. -
And by all means wash your hands thoroughly before going to the bathroom, guys especially. (I know a guy with a very funny story about making salsa with habaneros then failing to heed the above tip...)

And think of those poor kittens they got killed...

Is it considered beneficial to keep the heat up during training sessions? Perhaps to keep the muscles warm & prevent injury, or just to make you sweat more? I'm wondering because my sensei cranks the heat all the way up to 90 in our dojo. Doesn't help that it's a forced air unit that blows across the room directly on the front line of students, if you're stuck with the end of the line in that row while doing lunge stretches and such it feels like your ankles are getting singed. He usually lowers it to 75/80 after the warmups are over, at least. Nobody's dropped dead of heat stroke so far and I'm not inclined to question his methods, just curious if it's a common practice. I'm taking a cardio kickboxing class at another dojo (thanks for the suggestion Kickbutt:)) and I noticed it's pretty darn toasty in there too. Last summer I was so looking forward to training in winter when it would be nice and cool...no such luck!

The "ninja" services he lists include ordering pizzas to the victim's house and throwing flaming bags of poop, don't need a whole lot of training for that...but he must have had SOME training to get that ninja-magic psychic contact utility working!

I use one at home (clapper style with a leather pad that I suspect is too soft, but the one I wanted to get was a bit too pricey for the moment) as well as at the dojo. I use it because I want to improve my power and focus. Below is a link to an interesting document I ran across from a guy that used to be a big makiwara fan but has changed his mind, kind of an interesting take on this... http://www.24fightingchickens.com/shotokan/101/28_makiwara.html

Is everyone here seriously afraid to go to the FBI's website?? Anyway, after reading this post I checked it out and found the following document which contains a list similar to the one posted here (might be the same, I didn't check it word for word). HOWEVER, the list is prefaced by several qualifications and cautions about how the list is meant to be used, it is definitely not meant for teachers to scrutinize every kid against. Here's a highlight: And here's a link to the whole document: http://www.fbi.gov/publications/school/school2.pdf The FBI actually has a pretty nice and interesting site. There's even a fun section for kids--get 'em brainwashed early, I say!

I played the oboe back in high school. Have been toying with picking it up again lately but am horrified by what comes out of the thing now when I try. (I was good in high school, I tell you!)

I'm still trying to perfect the Flying Sleeve move from that movie Iron Monkey, I'm starting to think my traditional karate gi just can't swing it. Boy did I pick the wrong style. -
Wow, I'm not much into video games, don't know any of those. The last game of any kind I remember liking was on my parents' Apple II! But I got into DOA3, learned all of Hitomi's moves and combos and got really really good with her...then my friends came over and button-mashed me into oblivion again and again. Actually it was the JKD guy, every time I'd get close enough to attack he'd WUUAAHHHH me across the screen with an unlikely-looking double-elbow strike, then stomp on my face while I was down, my friend only needed to use one freakin button to kill me. Stupid thing.
-
I have no experience with JKD, but our XBOX came with Dead or Alive 3 and there's a goofy JKD character who dances around in his flaming pants and shrieks WUTAH or WUAAHHH every time he moves (even when he's just shaking his fist in the air for no apparent reason, which is an excellent time to cream him). All I wanted to do was find the button combination that would make my guy rip his vocal chords out, I can't imagine anyone besides Bruce Lee trying to pull that off in real life!

I've only learned gekisai dai ichi and sanchin so far, I've pretty much memorized gekisai dai ni from watching other students but haven't started practicing it yet. I think after gekisai dai ni we'll learn saifa. We don't have any advanced students so what comes next is always a bit of a mystery to me, I'm not even sure what belt color comes after white in our dojo! (Must happen at 7th kyu since I don't think 4 stripes would fit...) I thought there were only 12 katas in Goju ryu, and I'm not familiar with the other ones you mentioned. Is this the difference between Japanese influenced and traditional Okinawan Goju??
