very good point, shorin ryuu. You absolutely have to move around, keep them on the move. Plus, if you move when you block, you may catch them attacking a bit too slow and catch an opening. I'm rather surprised by this... I'm not that tall (5'10"), but I routinely train with people shorter than me (as short as 5'2")... I hate fighting shorter people! It makes things tougher for me... less target to hit, my punches, blocks, etc. have to be lower. I'd think, that if you keep moving and are quick, short people are really tough opponents. edit: oops! realized the post was about weight; not height oh well... maybe some of the same ideas apply my bad

Very true. I figure if your instuctor is correcting you all the time, he sees you as worth the time to correct

AHHH! I do the exact same thing! It's a crazy reflex I have. I have been able to repress it during karate; I have no idea why though. I have a feeling if you just kept it as a semi-conscious thought in the back of your mind as you train, after a little while it will become second nature and you won't really have to think about it anymore. Just my thoughts

I should start taking one of these. It sounds like a fantastic idea to remember pointers you pick up and need to work on.

I haven't ever experienced any problems with this. I am also not aware of an official requirement to keep your nails short; I think it's just one of those unwritten rules that everyone follows out of respect for whomever you might scratch

that's exactly what I woulda said... it seems to work well (at least for me) when you sort of "look through"? your opponent... I don't know how to describe it specifically.

Would a person tire out with taking 2 types of M.A. at once?
vertigo replied to Kamisama's topic in Health and Fitness
Though I have never taken two martial arts at once, and don't really see myself doing that in the near future, I don't forsee any problems if you'd really want to do this and devote the time required to it. Now, 3 hours a day, every day, every week? That sounds like it would be difficult at the least. However, if you want to devote that much time and energy to learning two arts at once, then go for it. Just make sure to give it your all. Don't learn half of two arts -

Good for you! I'm 18 and am also smoke and drink-free... but it amazes me how many people in my high school used to drink "just because"! And now at college, it's just as bad, if not worse. Fortunatly, I have found friends who also avoid this kind of behavior and choose a more responsible road. And, davison, sorry, I have no advice for you (I don't know how one would quit smoking). I just hope that you find the strength to kick this addiction. It's good that you recognize that you need to quit, now you just need to find the willpower to make it happen. I hope that you do.

good question. probably both... (and slightly amusing) why people would shell out any amount of money for a certificate that has no meaning or backing behind it, such as years of training, is beyond me.

YES, being flat footed could be related to it. I know that in my freshman year of high school, during basketball practices, I started experiencing a lot of knee pain during running. Went to a podiatrist, and sure enough, flat feet (and something else wrong with my foot.. anyway, ended up throwing a lot of pressure on my knee). I have been wearing orthodics in my shoes for the past 5 years to keep this in check. I've never had any problems as far as karate is concerned though. You may want to look into the flat foot aspect of that, if no other reason for the knee pain is available, or you haven't had it checked (i.e. you simply just noticed that you have flat feet). Just my thoughts and experience on the matter. Good luck getting your knee pain resolved.

I end up doing the same thing. My balance does improve after slowly working my kicks (it forces me to focus on my muscle connections to keep myself balanced). However, my kicks are really low when I do this also. I doubt it's something to worry about (at least I don't ) Thanks for the information, Kicks...
