  1. Peanut butter eggs!! Now we're talking! :) Those are awesome..
  2. It's supposed to be, but it doesn't affect her at all or make her sick.. don't quite know why... crazy dog
  3. I have used a video camera to look at my kata a few times. Rather odd, the things that felt great looked terrible, and the things that felt terrible looked great on camera.. That wouldn't be a bad training tool at all, but remember to keep things working on the inside too, i.e. if you feel offbalance and no power on a technique, but it looks good on film, don't simply accept it Mirrors.. umm, I always have trouble using those so I'll abstain from recommending or condemning those. What to work on? Everything! Ok, ok. Narrowing it down a bit. Work on what doesn't work. Whatever you're having trouble with in your kata, work on it until it feels like second nature. Eventually, you'll be able to blend all the parts together until it feels like second nature. How to build speed? Visualization usually works for me. Knowing the application to every move in my kata really helps. Like, the last move in Heian Nidan, the forearm strike to the throat (at least that's the application I've been taught). Visualizing an opponent there who I must defend myself against makes me attack with every ounce of speed and power I have. If you are simply seeing kata as a series of movements, it may be tougher to "psyche" yourself up on your technique. Hmm.. I'm not sure if any of that made much sense... Just kinda rambled on about anything and everything I thought. Wait!! Finally, a summation of everything: practice practice practice. It'll all get better the more you work on it. Good luck.
  4. Well, as long as you have no big problems with the price, I would recommend attending. I've only been to one tournament so far (second is in a week), but I found it a great learning experience.
  5. Welcome to the forums! I too am a hockey fan.. too bad the NHL cancelled this year
  6. Not quite... my dog seems to love them though.. She'll manage to dig up at least one a year, no matter where we put them!!
  7. I always remember that no matter how bad a day is going, it'll soon be over! and tommorow, anything can and will happen!
  8. Nahh... I wouldn't worry about it too much.. I did the exact same thing I usually never pick up too much weight without height, but I picked up around 10-15 lbs since I started karate too, same situation: more muscle equals more weight.
  9. Welcome to the forums
  10. Welcome to the forums!
  11. I have occasionally gone pheasant hunting back home in ND, but not too much. One of these years I'd like to try bow hunting deer; sounds like a challenge.
  12. It'd be more than I'd be used to, we usually see around $20 for two events... but I don't necessarily see it as completely unreasonable.. how big of a tournament is it? [no blood?!? I'm shocked! ]
  13. Minneapolis, MN Shotokan Karate 8th Kyu (Orange Belt) Student
  14. It's definitely possible, I've heard of it being done... but why?? I'd agree with other posters on here, sounds like a quick way to break my finger If you really want to find out, I'm sure there is an article posted somewhere on the net that'll tell you how to perform them correctly... of course, assuming no one here knows.
  15. Well, if you're at Penn State, keep your eyes open for some collegiate tournaments held by other clubs from around the area. I know we hold a tournament at the U of Minnesota and we also travel to other colleges for their tournaments. That'd be a decent starting place to look, I'd think.
  16. A good question. Since I only know two, in my only tournament this year, I used Heian Nidan.. even though at the moment, my Heian Shodan is far better as far as my technique. Which brings me to a mini-question within this thread if anyone feels like answering it: If you're between two kata, should you perform the more technically challenging? or your better (but not by a whole lot) kata (even though it may be easier)?
  17. vertigo

    Belt order?

    9th Kyu - White 8th and 7th - Orange 6th - Green 5th and 4th - Purple 3rd, 2nd, and 1st - Brown Shodan and beyond - Black
  18. no kidding.. sounds like a good way to bash your toes with falling weights...
  19. yeah, probably... but its not a bad amount of weight... I came in 5'10" 120lbs (a little extra weight couldn't hurt )... and the added weight is mainly muscle, which is definitely welcome
  20. Curious... doesn't sound like a bad idea Sounds like it would strengthen technique (if performed correctly) kinda like a weighted donut for a bat (in baseball)
  21. Thank you for flying with KarateForums. .....wait a minute
  22. Welcome to the forums! Enjoy!
  23. I kind of did too! Hmm.. must not be as many baseball fans out there as I thought there would be
  24. wow.. umm.. in my opinion, if this guy abused you mentally and sexually, why would you want to go back to him? I'm trying to say this as delicately as possible, but I'd avoid him... you'll be better off without him, if he's an abuser. I haven't been through this situation, but this is just my opinion. Whatever you decide, best of luck with whatever you decide to do. Stay safe
