  1. Speed times mass = momentum, not force (though measuring momentum transferred can be useful too) Pressure = force per unit area = Force / area (in SI, Pascals = Newtons per square metre) I guess a way would be to have a non-deforming object hanging freely. If you know the mass of the object and you can measure how high it swings up to when you have hit it, you can work out the energy transferred by your blow. Energy transferred by strike = Gravitational energy gained by swinging object = mass of object x gravitational field (10) x height gained If you measure mass in kilograms and height in metres, your answer will be in joules. It would be important to have a non-deforming object, because otherwise energy is going into deforming the object and not into making it swing up. To have any chance of accuracy you'll also need a partner to watch the bag swinging up so you can concentrate on delivering the techniques. for PSI, you just need speed, and wieght. and *divided by area*. you dont actuily have to hit anything. it can be done much easyer in numbers.
  2. The ability to know you can pretty much take out any threat to yourself/companions. A sense of safty... even if its not real, if a bigger guy is pushing me around, i can use his size against him, with joint locks, sweeps extc.. its nice
  3. I bleive its speed times wieght of object, divided by striking serface i forget what units the wieght and speed are, most likly KPM, and grams. that will equal your PSI (pressure per square inch) in newtons i bleive.
  4. ya im in lancaster, and ive heard nothing of it either?
  5. according to old texts, please dont ask me to site... i forget where it was, it was omthing like a few thousand years old, it said a ninja was a "jack of all trades" type person, with any skills to fit the job. with only ninjitsu as a basic. The "ninja magic" was half made up, half real, the fake half was what the public knew and feared thus giving ninjas a fatal aura and could cause terror to there victims. The real part of the magic was in a sense false, they had such training they could "see the future" in a fight, meaning they could predict the movements of there enemies very accuratly, giving them a "foresight" so highly hyped about.
  6. True, but they've been doing it here whole lives, you'd be suprised how weak real wieght lifters are, with out endurance training. Hence you dont see the body builders on the worlds strongest man, you see slightly over wieght large men(who yes probibly are body builders too), not the ripped * little guys you see at the gym. but as im saying you rarly gain endurance from lifting. You dont have to blieve me, but its the truth. Ive been lifting for a while, put in perspective, im 120 pounds, i can sled-press about 650, doesnt mean i can run/sprint for squat.
  7. quote] i want to argue that. i was sparring a few months back and i had my wrist broken. i kept on sparring and afterward i even tried to do push ups. my instructor refuses to teach Pain Compliance specificly because of instances like this. when someones adrinaline is high enough, there is very little that they feel. but then again ive never had my pubic symphasis broken. Well of corse it depends on the damage the break has done, and just what you broke, but pain will stop you if its allpied enough, you might be able to move but you might vomit, or other things dealign with fatigue
  8. People under rate "pain", agree'd you can work through some pain, but after a certin thresh-hold, IE kicking full force into the groin, your body locks down as a natural defense. Want a real example? try breaking a bone, then trying to move it, your body wont likly allow it to move, enough though the tendins/muscles are still there.(not suggesting you do it, but when i broke my wrist, i couldnt move or bend it, even know it was just a buckle.)also a nother good example, snap kick somone in the thigh muscle, about 3/4's up, there knee's will buckle in.... a police officer tought me that once, she said they used there vatons and are trained to hit there for the desired result. The kick, weather crushing or not, will stop the reciever in its tracks. (if it hits of corse.) also imagine how much y0our foot wieghts, maybe 2-3 pounds. multiplay this by the speed its traveling, maybe 50 feet persecond. thats about a 8000 newton blow (estimating), 1 newton = about what it takes to split an apple. Thats a * load of force.
  9. 3rd time, sorry i was wrong. And i NEVER said i didnt want to be white belt underf any conditions i jsut said id rather not.
  10. I know i've kinda had a bad attitude, i just felt like i was being attacked, and they wheren't even reading what i was saying. Anyways, looks like ill wait to make a decision, maybe ill take that guys advice, and make my own style muahahaha. I have come up with some "Moves" of myown, that i like... hehe, kidding of corse. but ya never know. look out for my new stylecomming in 2010! Dues Sine! the first latin based matrial art form!
  11. Thank god. SOMONE listened to me. The dojo i was in didnt notice hard work and it really bugged me... i do feeel i have a good base for TSD, although i guess id just start from the begging, not even bother telling him, cause i dont think it would make a diffrence, i think im just gonna continue studying under my own hand...
  12. Its a TSD dojo, which as i said ive attended before. They relaly dont care how good you are, just time.
  13. For martial artists you certinly are childish, Your not reading what im sauing, your just going "Look! its a new guy proposing a diffrent idea, lets ban together and mock him!" I wasnt saying, and i clearfyed this several times, i dont want to/blieve i should skip the basics. Im saying, in the dojo near me, white/yellow belts ONLY learn the basics, which i have learned twice now, pretty recently, i dont wish to just learn them for the year i am here, and then have to quit when i leave. Maybe i can use an exmaple for certin dolts who dont understand: Ive been snowboarding 10 years, the basics are VERY important, i practice them all the time. But I dont waste my time when i goto a new mountin only going down the bunny slope, i want to board new terrians, and challenges. Im not a perfect snowbaorder, but im respectable, and i choose to go down 1x2 black diamonds, because they challenge me. that make it through your cloud of ignorance? sorry if i was to hazy?
  14. your not listening, so im done talking. later.
  15. FOR the last time, its not about doing the basics, its about not getting to do anything BUT the basiscs.
  16. i supose i deserve that. Its not so much that, as ill be going to college in a year, i wont make past yellow belt, AKA no sparring for me, pretty much nothing i want to do in martial arts..
  17. I woudlnt suggest "power lifting" for martial arts, im not expert, but i know a bit about lifting.( football, sports ,ext.) powerlifting is basicly only for wieght gain/loss. It effects you actuil strength very little... you actuil gain a diffrent type of muscle when you power lift, that is full of protien , hence the bulky images of power lifters, but it actuily creates weaker muscle ratios then plyo/endurance provides.. i woudl suggest "quick" reps of low wieght, at high number of reps.
  18. actuily, pretty much what i do, im an "insomniac" of sorts... so i spend a lot of "sleeping time" meditating.. its a uslessful thing to do when you cant sleep for hours...
  19. Some of you are missing my point.... but o well Im not a "master" of martial arts by ANY means. Im just young, strong, and very dedicated. i train everyday, in what i guess you could call my "own style"... caues i dont goto a dojo/gym.... I just want the more action side of martial arts, maybe i should try to find a Muy Thai dojo? (excuse my spelling) ive gotten to the point, i just ware wieghts around (ankles, back) haha. i dunno why really... i just like training, and its defintly helped, my vert jump is insane, im 5'6, and i can dunk on a regualtion net.
  20. I just wanna make this clear, i dont care about the color of my belt. its not about that. its just they have crappy low belt training sessions where you just sit around and do punches for an hour. Id rather be sparring, contact training, and more advanced things that i enjoy... i had originaly 1 year of karate, then 1 year of TSD/hipkido.
  21. hahah, nope, i live in PA anyways, i dont blieve instuction is nessisary for inprovement... Well if your talking a strict tequinque sense, then yes, but im not doing it for that, its just a form of self defense/meditation... BTW i pratice judo on my friends ahhahah. (in a safe way) anyways, i feel i came off the wrong way, im not trying to boast or brag in anyway.... or "inflate" my ego or somthing.. im just asking is it really worth it to be treated like a moron for a few years before i actuily learn anything? I mean i cant stay with this for more then a year anwyays im currrently a junior at HS... so ill be leaving
  22. I understand what your saying... but ive started/quit karate a few times... im 99% sure i dont forget anything about being a white belt... its just frusterating, im small, but very well built for martial arts... And i always gave it my all, on almost ever punch, i just never was recognised for my efforts, 6 months per belt... it was to much time to just waste doing punches in a horse stance.. Sure my technique is probibly flawed, but im a natural fighter, i picked up on my kata and kusmine very quickly.. and its not as if i need basics to train my strength... i dont mean this as like insult to people who have been extensivly at a dojo, but i blieve myself to be more suffient then some "black belts" that have walked out of there(the dojo near me)... anyways... ill think about it, starting from 7th might not be as bad as i remeber, but i might consider just continuing to teach myself, i enjoy the chalenge of learning around 7 styles at once... it gives me a better feel, and allows me to mix and match, as well gives me a sense of self accomplishment instead of "Kick higher", which i dont understand the importance to... incase anyone was wondering ive been doing some: karate. judo, ninjitsu, TKD, TSD, kick boxing, and some hipkido.... Dont get me wrong, i also have study'd there historys, origins, and spirituality around most of these.. i feel its very important.
  23. Im new here, ive been reading for a while... i personaly enjoy martial arts for meditation, and confidence purposes. i have only had about a year or two of karate, but i didnt find it to my liking, the "Time based" rank system... extc. Well bsck to my point, over the last year or so ive been fasincated learning about styles, and techniques. I've tought myself more then i ever learned at a dojo, and i feel more confident in self defense then ever... The only dojo close to me is what i conider a "Mcdojo", it is a TSD, although they follow it closly, only some hipkido is mixed in, i feel its very fake... but im thinking about joining anyways... i want to know if all my research and pratice at home would allow me to start at a higher level then a 7th ryu... i dont want to learn the basics for the 4th time... I know you cant speak for them, but do you bleive self tought knowledge might start me off higher? i gotta go, study halls ending hahah -teal
