Family Guy
Exponential replied to scottnshelly's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Family Guy is great. One of the very few things I watch on tv. Btw, the makers have a new cartoon out called "American Dad" now on Fox. Pretty funny. Stereotypical CIA agent as a dad, nerd for a son, a liberal daughter, a goldfish with a brain that was swapped with a German Olympic skier, and a metrosexual alien. The pilot was funny, and the first episode was on Monday. I missed the first ep, but the pilot was great. -
Building muscular endurance and strength up evenly.
Exponential posted a topic in Health and Fitness
I just started a heavy-wieght low-rep lifting routine with my backpack and a bunch of big books because I wanted to improve my strength more then anything else. (I'm going to save up and get a bb soon, but untill the bag should be fine ) Then, I was going to work on my muscular endurance after a month or so of that. But then I started thinking. Is there any reason I couldn't build them up evenly by picking a wieght I can only do for about 3 reps and just keep doing it untill I get to 12. Also, as the reps picked up, so would the pace, etc. Then I'd find whatever wieght I can only do for 3 reps, and build it up the same way. I'm not worried about losing/gaining any wieght, and I'd be eating a lot to handle both wieght lifting and mma training that I'm trying to start soon anyway. (Working out a way to get transportation.) So don't think I'm trying to bulk and cut at the same time. I know you can't really do that. Thanks for the help. -
the dizziness can't be helped. when you take a hard shot to the head, the brain gets knocked against the walls of the skull. this is what causes your head to spin and also what causes KOs. as for the neck strengthening, you don't have to have weight - lay on your back - keep your head and neck off of the floor. lift your head up and down for 30 reps - do not let your head touch the floor. Then, look left and return to the starting position for 30 reps. then look right for 30. your head shouldn't touch the floor until all 90 reps are done. as you progress, add reps. Also, if you have a partner, clinch and do neck wrestling drills. Cool stuff. I need to start strengthening my neck. (It's thick but week) On a Silva training highlight video, I saw him doing the same thing but from his stomache. Would it be good to do it both ways?

Clarification on cutting and weightlifting at the same time
Exponential replied to ad's topic in Health and Fitness
Thanks, sevenstar. How do you know what your wieght class should be? -
Don't get too carried away with body type doesn't matter. It does. It just shouldn't be the deciding factor. In general, height helps strikers a lot because of reach, but they don't need to be overly bulky. Grapplers are constantly pushing an pulling while they role, so muscle helps a lot more. Still, as said, don't get carried away with it. Royce Gracie wasn't exactly bulky, and many good boxers aren't exactly tall.

Clarification on cutting and weightlifting at the same time

Is lifting for endurance (12 to 15 reps) better for bulking or cutting? I know that 8 reps is what builds the most muscle, but I've also heard that lifting for endurance builds some lean mass. Also, how does a pro fighter at the lower level, who has to fight every couple months to keep up anyway find time to bulk when they have to work so hard on their cardiovascular conditioning for the fight? Thanks. -
If you have strong abs with good endurance, does it realy matter if they're visible? I've been wondering that for a while.

Is it okay to do pushups while your triceps are still sore from wieght lifting? I know triceps get worked out while doing pushups, so I want to make sure it's okay to do pushups while they're sore from wieght lifting.

Hey. Me and my dad wrestle around a lot, and he, being about 220 and me about 170, always gets me in this one hold. I'm on my side (read: on my right shoulder), and he's got a side mount position with his chest on my left arm and my left arm in a figure four hold behind my back. What's the easiest way to reverse this? If I'm not describing it clearly, tell me with some advice on how to describe better, and I will. Thankya

Oops, bad wording on my part. When I said "every other day", I meant every day that isn't a monday, wednesday, or friday. I'll go back and edit that. As for weight-lifting, I feel stupid for not mentioning which exercise. benchpress, military press, dead lift, squats, curls, The tricep exercise where you hold a dumbell vertically behind your head with both hands, and unbend your arm being careful not to move anything below the elbow., shrugs, calv work out (forget the name and how to describe it) I tried to pick ones that'd work most major muscle groups and have already been taught how to do with proper form. Btw. Am I making the right decision by bulking some with 8-10 reps before cutting with 12-15? And, is taking a wieght that I can do know more then 8 reps at first on, and then keep lifting it till I hit 15 a good way to time bulking/cutting cycles? The ultimate goal is wieght loss and conditioning since I'm goign to do muay thai and bjj this summer, but I know that muscle mass helps metabolism. Thanks

I think I figured out a decent workout schedule. What do you guys think? No real specific goal, just to get in shape. Mon, Wed, Fri: jump-rope for 20 minutes as warmup; stretch; calistinics on every body part i work out for further warmup; lift wieghts (start at whatever wieght i can do at 8 reps max, slowly work my way up to 15 reps, so i build muscle at first, then burn fat as i get higher reps) stretch as cool down; tues, thurs, sat, sun ride bike for 1 1/2 hours for cardio; stretch; ANy suggestions, comments, whatever are appreciated.

To anyone who's been physically knocked out in the ring/cage: What does it feel like? I don't meen the ref saying that you can't intelligently defend yourself. WHat's it like to get absolutely knocked out?

Thanks, Sauzin, for discussing this is a nicer way then you started. ANd thanks, isshinryuka, for some great points you made on my behalf. I think I'll quietly watch this post unfold for now as I don't have much to say. XD Oh, and smr: I like your views on that. Cool stuff. -

It's semantics not somantics (I do believe what you're reffering to is more of the syntax used to manipulate the underlying semantics, but whatever), and I know what ki is. I don't want an art involving it. Forbid it would offend you. And because of the bit of a flame war I've gotten into, I a lmost forgot to thank everyone for their advice. Thanks all. -

Okay, in an attempt to keep from acting like an idiot and loosing my tempor on a forum, I'll keep this simple. My problem had nothing to do with respect, and everything to do with it registering as a sign of worship in my head. If you want to assume that I don't respect someone because I'm not sure about bowing, do so. I could see the disrespect in refusing to bow knowing that it's an insult, but that's why I asked if it was okay. If I decide that I /do/ have a problem with it, then I simply won't go. You don't know me, and you don't know my reason for not wanting to bow. Go rant to someone who cares. -

I almost forgot to post my goals. That might be a bit helpful. XD I want to gain a lot of focus and concentration skill. I want to increase my reflexes, speed, and flexibility. I want a hobby that can last a long time before I become a black belt. (which goes back to wanting a complex and long art.) Thanks.
