  1. I do not have any personal knowledge of any of these organizations, but the instructor of the Tang Soo Do school that I worked out with, spoke very highly of the NASKA.
  2. Hey that's great! I just love football
  3. Hello and welcom to page 8, Please keep your hand and arms inside the car at all times until it comes to complete stop.
  4. I believe it all comes down to the instructor. Most of my MA experience is Chung Do Kwan TKD and focused, very much, on the "traditional" side of things. Recently, I have also worked out with a Tagn Soo Club, for about a year, where the instructor also did a lot of K1 fighting, and he focused mainly on the sport side of things. The styles were very similar, in their aproaches to shifting body weight, and basic techniques were very similar as well, but the instructors focus and direction is what leads the class.
  5. Morality is very subjective. One person's morals might be completely contrary to another person's, so that is a very difficult question to answer. For me, yes it would immoral to fight when it a fight can be avoided. To you, though, you have to figure that one out for yourself. This should be something that you search deep inside yourself for and find the truth about your own ideals. There will always be people out there that feel that fighting is a way of life and that there is nothing wrong with it.... they might be the same one's who get beat up in the bar every weekend. You will also have the extreme opposite... people who believe that it is better to go to the grave rather than lift a finger and risk striking someone. I can tell you that even picking a fight in the school yard seems like it might be a rather silly thing to do these days. I recently heard about three different teenagers that were going to the same highschool I graduated from many years ago... a nice upper-middle class community, and these three kids all brought hand guns to school. Coming home with a black eye isn't the worst thing that can happen anymore. Those were highschool kids, but I wouldn't feel any safer in a bar or on the street. Who knows what kind of weapon anyone is carrying anymore?
  6. Hey, who moved the thread? I've been looking everywhere for you... Actually, I never saw it in the original topic. This might help you if they are the same organization. http://www.ustu.org
  7. Okay, I think we're on the same page
  8. I haven't anything like that happen to my foot, but I did mess up my right wrist while training sever years ago. I never went to the doctor, and it eventualy healed, but I get a sharp pain on very humid days. Since then I've asked the doctor about it, and he wanted me to do some physical therapy to see if that would help. I never bothered to follow up with the therapy, and now just deal with the pain. So all in all.... I have just offered you no help what-so-ever I don't want to say, "you may just have to deal with it for the rest of your life", but in reality..... you may just have to deal with it for the rest of your life.
  9. It's a little difficult to answer the question of worth. It really comes down to what you feel about it. Now, I have heard mixed reviews on the machines. I have never actually used one, so I can't give you to much feedback. Are you able to use the machine before you purchase it? I think you would want to make sure that the machine is going to be comfortable enough to use regularly. Check for ease of use, like how easy it to work in to the stretch, and more importantly, in my opinion, is how easy is it to realese the machine quickly if you feel that you have pushed yourself to far? Be very aware of what your body is telling you as yu do use these type of machines. You do not want to over-stretch, and do damage to your muscles that could take long periods of time to heal.
  10. Hello and welcome
  11. If you want to argue this from a Christian standpoint... everything was put here by God. Sin was put here by God. Does that justify its use? Nope. From another Christian perspective. The apostle Paul, in one of his letters (if its important to you I can look it up), was counseling a group of people who had "issues" with those who ate meat from the temples of false gods. Back then, it was common practice to sell the extra meat from the sacrifices in a butcher shop that was set up within these temples. A group of Christians in the early church had a real problem with that meat and had problems with anyone who ate that meat. The Apostle Paul told them, basically to chill out! Without having my bible in front of me, so I can't quote it word for word, he told them that "all things are permissable" as long as they do not replace God within your heart. He told them that if a Christian brother or sister chose to eat the meat, then rejoice with them beofore God that they have a good meal. If eating the meat in the presence of a Christian brother or sister was going to make that brother or sister stumble...or questian Christian values, then they should not eat it in front of them, and rejoice with the brother or sister for wanting to stay clean and pure before God. The important thing was that in everything, they were giving glory to God. I've mentioned it before but I'll say it once again, if Ki, Chi, or whatever else you might call it, is not replacing God in your heart, and because of it, you have an oportunity to witness Christ to someone, I don't see that as a conflict with the scriptures.
  12. This was back in '88 for me. At the time, I was pretty miffed about the rule. I knew there was nothing I could do about it, so I just trained for the day I turned 18 (it was actually about 6 months after, so I guess I didn't train correctly ), but I didn't like it. I went to tournaments and saw the 16 and 17 year old black belts... 10 year old black belts were a little more rare than they are today, and I didn't see any of them, if I did, I may have been even more upset. Now, though, I can see the reasoning behind it. I look back at my attitude about it and how I felt, and there is no way I deserved my 1st Dan. Until I got it, and realized it didn't change a thing about me, I was only interested in reaching that rank. That may have been part of the reasoning behind my lack of training in the years immediately following that. Now a little older, and hopefully a little wiser, I look back on all of that as a learning experience.
  13. I'd say at least half of my (almost daily) private workout is working on what we call "The 15 basics". They are the first thing that any new student will learn, and I firmly believe it's pointless to try and perfect a reverse side kick, if I don't spend that kind of time perfecting my basic side kick, etc.... Class time is different. There are some class sessions where all I will have the students work on is the basics, sometimes even just the kicking basics, or blocking or punching basics. I don't break it down that far very often though. Most of the time I would put the percentage of class time spent on the basics at 35 to 40%. Every class we will work on them, but how much time depends on what else I have planned for them to work on. I do give private lessons to my students from time to time as well, but its up to them what we work on then. Most of the time the privaye lessons are before a tournament, and they like to work on their forms or sparring, and stay as far away form the basics as they can.... at least for that hour.
  14. http://www.karatetournaments.com Try this link. I check this one from time to time. It lists a number of the larger tournaments. Some of the smaller, more local tournaments might not get on here though.
  15. I took me 4 years. Three years of which I was also fanatical about training. I guess that was about the norm in my style, but even if I wanted to test earlier, I couldn't have. They don't allow you to test for 1st dan until you are at least 18. Before 18 you get a junior black belt, but then you have to re-test when you turn 18 or go back down to 1st gup. I didn't want to test twice (even though the junior black belt test is supposed to be quite a bit easier), so I knew all along hte soonest I would test, and that is how I trained. I have heard of some others in my style testing in as little as 2 and a half years, but they are very rare, and I know some have taken 10 years or more, but that may say more about their determination, or lack there of, than our testing procedures.
  16. That was the same advise my first intructor gave to a group of students that were having similar problems. We used to chuckle during class because he would stand there and yell from across the room, "TOE..... TOE.... TOE!!!!" as a reminder to them to point it up.
  17. Just wanted to let you know that I liked your idea, but I just don't have the time. Good luck getting it set up though.
  18. I don't know if you're that far out in left field, but it sounds more like the plot of a movie to me. And instead of weapons hidden in their clothes, they could carry floppy disks, and CD-R's, and they could bash people in the head by flinging around a mouse... be carfule, if you right-click it, three inch spikes shoot out both sides... Oh yeah, Spielburg is gonna be all over this one. On a serious note, I did read on this forum, that someone would give the term "modern day ninja" to some of the military's special forces. I think that has some merrit to it, and I believe they already have training in most of things you have mentioned. I was not accepted into the military so I could be way off on this, but that's just my opinion.
  19. Why do we drive our cars on a parkway, but we park in a drive way? Why are things sent by ship call cargo, but if they're sent sent by a truck they are call shipment? Shouldn't it be called a "truckment"? A thermos can keep things hot and it can keep things cold, but how does it know when to do which? And my personal favorite from Steven Wright: I you were going the speed of light of light in your car, and then you turned your lights on, would they do anything?
  20. Greetings!
  21. I see what you mean now. That still sounds like a pretty big undertaking, but I can see how something like that might improve things on the whole.
  22. Welcome. I can't say I am a fan of Japanese animation, but the style of their animation is certainly different, and it can be interesting to watch from time to time. At 16, I think you might have a while to go before many people would take your claim of searching for the special someone "forever", but I wish you luck in your continued search. I too play the guitar, but those war stories are for another forum.
  23. WW, would that be along the same lines of the old quote, "Sell the sizzle, not the steak!"?
  24. I see your point, but I wonder if something like that would ultimately cause more problems. The WTF certifies all of their refs, but the WTF, IMHO, is one of the major factors of the Homoganized(sp?) TKD that we are seeing. Kwans still exist outside the WTF, but within, it seems like the kwans have all been forced to merge into this one generic lump. It's late here, and mabey I'm not thinking clearly, but I wonder if some type of national certification would really fule up arguments about what propper technique is, or what constitutes a point, or even how a form should be taught. One of the things I have enjoyed over the years is seeing how different styles interpret the same form. I enjoy seeing the slight variations from style to style. Now maybe your whole point was that we should find a way to get these judges to see past the variations, or judge them on some type of equal playing field, and that, I would love to see.... I don't see it happening in my lifetime though.
  25. It's true that society today has warped a lot of the holidays. Halloween had very pagen roots, but that message has been all but lost and now its just about dressing up for the kids. I know there are wackos out there who take it to the extreme with witch craft and such, but for most of us, its just a time for kids to have fun. Christmas on the other hand, also has very pagen roots. The day it is celebrated, the tree, the yule log, all came from pagen holidays... but at one time God had turned it to his glory and the glory of his Son as a celebration of the birth of our savior. Now that message is getting lost too. I guess the point I want to make is that these things can have different meanings to different people. Obviously a person who actually tries to cast spells on Halloween because Satan's power is supposed to be the greatest then, is someone who I would not associate with. That day has a much different meaning than that to me. It's about letting my kids dress up, hang out with their friends, and get way to much candy that the dentist will yell ay me about for letting them eat it. Lots of things can have different meanings to people. We might use a cross to symbolzize our belief in Christ. The Nazis(sp?) used a cross to symbolize Hitler's rule. An astrologer will look at the stars and try to see someone's future. I look at the stars and it reminds me of how awsome and powerful our creator is. The most important thing that I have learned is that God sees past all of that to our hearts. He see past all of our sins when we have Christ within us, so he can certainly see past a silly Yin/yang symbol on a school logo... A much longer post than I intended.... sorry, I'll stop preaching now.
