The ranking systems are different from style to style. Generally a 1st Dan wears a solid black belt, 2nd Dan wears a Black belt with one stripe, 3rd Dan wears a BB with 2 stripes and so on. Count the belt as 1 and then add the number of stripes to get the Dan level. But, as I said, this varies from style to style.

martial art shoes
gcav replied to sickwithit13's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Shoes that are designed for the MAs. Generally they have non-marking gum rubber soles and pivot points. These could be worn during all aspects of training with the exception of sparring. There are several different brand names and types that are available. -
Holding a high kick......(active flexiblity)......
gcav replied to Croy's topic in Health and Fitness
Practice your front, round and side kicks in slow motion, and hold your leg in place for a few seconds at the end of each kick. If you do several reps of each kick in slow motion you will build up the muscles in both legs. This will lead toward being able to hold a sidekick above your head. -

I do not know every rule for every contest. The only way to get the answer is to ask your instructor. But I will say that I have been involved in MA for about 30 years, and have entered many contests here in the US and overseas, and I have never heard of color restrictions for sparring equipment. -
Sorry to hear you are having problems. Steveb is right about keepping your training going, but be careful, keep your mind in the training hall and don't get physically hurt. When you start feeling down, go a few rounds with the heavy bag.

Do you practice combative martial arts?
gcav replied to delta1's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I study combative MA. We train in all areas concerned with the MA, not just the physical techniques of kicking and puching. -

Karate weapons: Just for fun or practical?
gcav replied to ShadowGoomba's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I agree with the above posts. Of course you can't walk down the street with a sword on your back or chucks stuck in your belt. But the techinques you learn from those weapons can be used by everyday objects that are readily available. So in that aspect, traditional weapons training is viable to todays MA students. -
The difficulty level in learning any weapon depends on the student. Different students will find the same weapon easy to learn or hard to learn. nine_lives_arent_enough - There is always more to learn

gcav replied to sickwithit13's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Shoes are required in one of the stlyes I've trained in. But as an instructor, I don't have any proplems with students wearing the correct type of shoes. -
I always hated the jumping round house.

One-step Techniques
gcav replied to ChicagoTaeKwonDo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Our one steps are used more to re-enforce the techniques taught in class rather than as a preset response to an attack. We do not number them or have a set number to know before you can be promoted. Students are required to come up with their own combinations during one step sparring as well. -
