I, by shear accident caught a leg of my brown belt sparring partner, and landed a beautiful spin kick to the groin. Didnt hurt him (thank God for protection) but it was a clean hit. Now, you dont get lucky enough to catch every leg, but when you can, be sure to counter quickly. We only have 2 seconds to counter. Just a thought on what the hands can do.

Whats your favourite stance , Why?
torris replied to Matousek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
whenever I prepare for a fight, I usually drop into a back stance, or fighting stance. From there I have plenty of options available to me. -
Pai Mei - Kill Bill Vollume 2
torris replied to Neo's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
i thought you might like to read this interview with Gordon Liu in regards to the character Pai Mei. I found it was an interesting read. -
I had only one question bout the whole movie, 1st Vol and 2nd. Where did Uma Thurman learn to sling steel like that. That was absolutley amazing on film.

Boyfriend? Girlfriend? My oldest is 11. We have been really driving home education and waiting till college to date. I hope it works. (LOL, I convinced my son that if he dates in HS, he will most likely end up with someone like my ex-wife (and she is the Devil incarnate, literally). That changed his mind real quick. The last girl that took an interest in him, he told her he wasnt interested in being a dad..... I had to laugh. It's funny, because he thinks girls are cute, but he thinks they are all like my ex-wife. Are I mean or what.

I rarely make any kind of advise for anyone, especially where this is concerned. Why? Generally, because no one ever listens. But, I know how heart break is. Man, get involved with your friends, MA, your grades, and school. Get your mind off girls. HS isnt where the hot babes are at anyway, lol. Just wait till college. You'll see what I mean.

Summer 2006, 5000 miles, a bicycle and a crazy idea.
torris replied to iolair's topic in General Chat
I am going out on a limb here, but it is 4968 miles from New York City to Honolulu, Hawaii. You may want to plan your route, and then figure the mileage. I think what you are doing is noble, and you should go for it. But, I think that you will be relieved to know that it probably isnt going to be near the distance you are thinking. -
The current issue is an M9. It is basically a beretta 9mm. And only Commissioned Officers, Police, and some Special Ops units carry them. They are not issued to everyone. They stopped issuing the Colt 45 some years back.

Just an update ya'll on progress. We are in our.... uhm, 4th week. Next week, wednesday after the holiday, My OS, and YD will take their gold belt exam. They are really getting excited about it now. The only one struggling, so to speak, is my OD, which is in soccer also. She is not testing till next month. I am excited that it is starting to make some sense to them, and that my YD is doing exceptionally well, according to her instructor. Thanks for all the advice. It appears to be working.

As a TKD-ist, I agree with the above posters. Be careful and do your diligence when looking for a school. Our DoJang practices a very balanced blend of hand and foot strikes, but also grappling, and one steps. Very effective self-defense methods. If the school doesn't offer practical self-defense, then look else where.

hey now, not all us Texans are bad. Welcome aboard. I am also in the Dallas area.

that was my thought.

high reps, low weight = strength low reps, high weight = bulk, or mass. take this formula and find the right balance for you.

Well, I didnt pay 5 figures for mine. I paid $950. It is made of 1050 carbon steel. It is razor sharp and I can tell you, it will cut rather confidently. I did break a 440 stainless katana with it (Not saying much), and it will slice candles rather easily. (Never tried against a human, and no one has volunteered; not that I am asking). I guess it depends on what you are seeking. This is a very practical sword. I guess the only thing that makes mine different is it is a double edged blade.

What do you carry self defense wise?
torris replied to HongKongFooey's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I carry a 9mm. Sorry, man to man is fine with me, but if they want to pull a gun, so be it, I am ready. Anyway, in all the time I have carried, NEVER, NEVER had to even pull it out. -
I have a 43" samurai sword. (Don't carry it around though). I had a gunsmith sharpen it to razor perfection and the weight of the blade alone would slice deep enough for stitches. My personal weapon is a Beretta 92fs. (Basically a civilian M9). I carry this almost everywhere I go. I also have a 12 gauge pump action shotgun (short barrel), a butterfly knife, and a leatherman knife (an ABSOLUTE neccessity. )

I have a CC permit and carry a Beretta 92fs 9mm with 10 round magazine. Probably the best weapon I have ever owned.

Are your kids in TaeKwonDo?
torris replied to The_One's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My kids are white belt, 2 will test for gold next week, after the holiday. My son is 11 yr. My oldest daughter is 9. My youngest daughter is 6. Since my OD is also in soccer, she doesn't spend as much time in the dojang, and will miss this testing. My YD is the surprise for even the instructors. She was having a hard time with it, but with some individual attention at the start, she is now excelling and is really better than me. -
Thanks for the info. That sounds exactly like what I am studying.
