Just for anyone who wants to know, "The Ultimate Fighter" premieres tonight at 11:00 PM on SpikeTV. CAN'T WAIT!

Just got back from my first Judo class. It was a lot of fun. The first hour was all exercises...warm-up and stretch, then falls, then laps of rolls and other things around the mats to keep warm. Then we moved onto technique for the second hour. We didn't work on throws tonight, all groundwork. I don't particularly like the rules, I prefer submission grappling rules, and I don't like working with a Gi much, but it is alive training, so I'm stoked. We went through 5 basic pins and 6 basic chokes. For the pins we did it like this: Instructor demonstrates Practice on unresisting partner One partner pins, other tries to escape Instructor demonstrates escape Practice escape against unresisting partner Practice escape against resisting partner For the chokes, we just did the techniques, didn't work on escaping. It was a good time, and perhaps more importantly than the training itself, I have found some new training partners, including an All American Wrestler and a former Sambo competitor from Russia.

Heh...what he said. We may have found something, but if anyone has any information, I'd still very much like to hear it.

I'd go with kip up..a kip, as far as I know, is a sort of rolling in the air technique learned in Judo that teaches you how to be thrown.

A MMA, Boxing or Muay Thai gym near Huntington, Indiana. My friend was in a self-defense situation yesterday, and though he came out of the altercation on top, he said he felt vulnerable and wanted to train something. I suggested one of the three above choices, and he said he'd like to try any of them. Huntington is near Fort Wayne. Anyone live in this area, or just know of MMA, Boxing or Muay Thai around there? The school should have a self-defense base as well as a sport base preferably, but a more sport-oriented gym is alright. Thanks!

Like Pineapple said, I make a point not to befriend people who would start a fight. However, hurting my friends is far worse than hurting me. I am extremely protective, espeically with my female friends.

What kind of details you have in your dojo/…

Tang Soo Do (Korean) Line Up: Highest ranks on right, going down. Stand in Joon Bee (Ready) Instructor calls Cha Ryut (Attention) Tora (turn) Kay Kimbrae Kyung Yet (Bow as the bent one, this is for bowing to the flags, American and Korean) Tora (turn) Kyung Yet (bow to Instructors) Joon Bee (Ready) We end the same way, but at the end of class, after the last "Joon Bee" the Instructor comes to attention, puts his/her right hand over their heart, and shouts "Tang Soo!" and doing a Knifehand strike-ish motion outward with the right hand (Soo Do, as in Tang Soo Do, means Knifehand). The class then repeats this, and we are dismissed. We very rarely sit except for stretching, but when we do it is cross-legged ("Indian" style). In the Advanced class, we are expected to stand in Joon Bee at all times, because it has students ranging from around 8 to around 16-17 (myself and a Black Belt, my friend Avinit...everyone else younger than us) and structure is more important, but in the Adult Class it's alright if we stand at Parade Rest or something like that...just no hands on hips or dangling at your sides. Tang Soo! -
5. Yves Edwards brilliant knockout of Josh Thomson via Jumping Roundhouse Kick to the head. 4. Chuck Liddell's KO of Tito Ortiz. 3. Testing for my 7th gup. 2. Being made an "official" assistant instructor and being given a key to the Dojang. 1. RETURNING TO THE ARTS!
-
1. Stick to my nutritional plan. 2. Find a MMA gym and do everything in my power to start training there.

RUNNING!! RUNNING IS EVIL! I'll do pushups, pullups, chinups, situps, crunches, V-ups, burpies, leg raises, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, rope climbing, ANYTHING BUT RUNNING!!

Shane, any idea where I would go to check this out? I went to Fairtex's website and clicked on "training", but the link seems to be dead.
-
Thanks Shane, I'll check it out.

Well. It looks like I may very well be leaving my Dojang. Because of the feared "Karate School Drama". I am of course upset about this, the upside, however, is that I can now seriously pursue MMA. BUT THERE IS NOWHERE TO TRAIN. Does anyone know if any MMA schools in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Palo Alto, anywhere around there, offer live-in programs? If you know of anything further away but preferably still in California, I would be happy to hear about that as well. Thank you very much, and please, do not tell me that the "drama" can be solved. Tang Soo!

Help! People dissing other dojos....
Mu Ryuk replied to KarateChick06's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Simple and effective: Ignore ignorance. -
Oh man, don't get me started... I have been known to go into entire forms when bored in public. When my friends start talking about something that bores me (politics, religion, etc), I start doing forms. Or shadow boxing. Or slamming them with a double leg takedown and proceeding to put them in an armbar. Or a rear naked choke. I get some odd looks on the forms and shadow boxing. And cries of agony on the armbar and RNC Don't worry, I always let them up before they pass out...

Found this one...perfect, #1 on the Hannukah list. Thanks much

Hey all, I am looking for a high quality mouthguard. Currently I have a two dollar Century one that you boil and is extremely uncomfortable. Does anyone know what kind is used in the UFC, or just a brand you suggest that is comfortable and durable and where I could get one? I don't want a double guard. Thanks.

Check the school out. But if the distance is the only advantage, I wouldn't switch. You have something good now, don't give it up unless the distance is an extreme inconvenience (like having to drive an hour to get to your current Dojo). Good luck whichever way you go. Tang Soo!

Sparring Against Little Control
Mu Ryuk replied to KnifeHand's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sometimes it is effective to blitz in and jam their legs and fire away at the body and jaw with your hands. This could A) get you in there to attack and B) teach him how to use his legs more. Good luck, Tang Soo! -
Tournament tomorrow.

Thanks for your support everyone, I took Second out of seven in Forms and Second out of nine in sparring. I think this was my greatest victory ever though, because the guy I fought in my third match was a really good Black Belt who went to a school that's based almost solely on sparring...the match was to three points, and I lost...but both of his other opponents lost 3-0, and going into that match I knew I probably wouldn't win...but I refused to let him shut me out...he went up 2-0 and I then got two points on him..2-2 when he got the win. But he knew damn well that I could have beat him. If we sparred twice, he knows I may have won, it wasn't just luck. That's the best victory I can imagine -
Tournament tomorrow.
