I was at that tourn. as well. I have to agree with most of what scottnshelly says. Although I have to say that I thought the black belt forms were pretty good (not flashy). Most of the kids forms I would agree were bad. I would have to say that I also didn't agree on the judging for the sparring. Also the guy in the sweats is a JKD/ Kung Fu guy thats why he wasn't wearing a gi. As far as attendence I don't know what happend there was about twice as many people at the same tourn. the year before.

Kicking someone with steel toed boots can be considered assault with a deadly weapon. So be sure you are justified and it would be a good idea to have a reason to be wearing them besides kicking people.

Anyone a police officer?

In our academy defensive tatics is only seven days long. It was a little Muay Thai(knees stikes mostly) and a few JJJ/hapkido type arm and wrist locks. Our instructors basically advised us that we should get more training on our own. Since then I really learned a lot in terms of police tatics from a seminar I attended with Sensi Sonny Hughes. I am hoping to attended another one in Nov. -
I' ve been in law enforcement for 8 years. It all really depends on where you want to work. Most places don't really care what your degree is in. I have heard the the FBI likes people with accounting and law degrees. I would suggest a degree in something that can help get you a job in another field because most people who start out in law enforcment don't last.

If it was a real self defense situation where there is no way out and you have have to fight you mostly likely will not get to set a limit on how many people attack you. So my answer would be as many as I could.

If you use more force than is needed to stop the threat you could very well be facing criminal charges not to mention being civialy liable for damages done to an attacker

I never train in my gi except at class. Usually just gym shorts and a t-shirt

Police Training
topdawg replied to man thing's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I ve been a police officer for seven years and I think that it is important to learn both grappling(standing and on the ground) and striking. Although striking a subject can be frowned upon by some on lookers even if justified. But learning to strike can also have the benifit of learning to read the telegraphs that someone may be about to attemt to "chain punch you into damnation". Also I would recommend finding an instructor who has experience with law enforcent to help with things like weapon retention (Very Important) and use of force justification and testimony. just my two cents -
