How about a William Tell version and put the apple on top of someone's head? What Ivan? -

There is an edge on the sword, I don't know if you could shave with it or not. It comes to a point that the apple is stuck to. The point isn't driven all the way through, just to the core. I think the object is to hit the apple from the core outward, not the part with the blade in it. Either that, or it's the angle of the strike that keeps the foot from hitting the blade on onlt the apple. I'll ask him Monday when I see him. -
You're 100% right in my opinion. I reread my post and saw I didn't express myself clearly. In fact, I contridict myself. I do think that there are youths that deserve to wear the belt, I often see more that really don't. I do believe there should be an age limit, but allow only those teens and under teens who deserve it to get it. This is why I usually avoid joining in on the subject of black belt and age. They often sink down to personal attacks and unsubstantiated assumptions. You don't know my history. I'm surprised that this came from a respected member like you. I rather take the high road. LOL, no problem. This whole forum is about opinions, not absolutes.

Shorinryu Sensei wrote: That's right, old grasshopper. It shouldn't matter. But it's human nature to follow the action. Also, one must observe what the judges in that ring, at that time, are looking for. When you are at ring side waiting to compete, you should not only look at what the other competitors are doing but also at what the judges are doing. If they score the aggressor, then be the aggressor. Under USTU and AAU Olympic style rules (Article 15 of the WTF Competition Rules), in the event of a tied score at the end of the match, the head of court will instruct the referee to make a superiority decision. The Referee will take the following into account in making a superiority decision: 1. If the tied score involves a tie through the deduction of penalty points, the competitor who scored more points will be declared the winner. 2. Technical dominance of one competitor over the other. (Hence, be the aggressor) 3. Greater number of techniques. (Hence, be the aggressor). 4. More advanced techniques. 5. Best competition manner. You should never have to leave the decision up to the judges. They always make the wrong decision, unless you win. But, just in case it is left to the judges, it is in your favor to know the rules and use them to your advantage. I won a national championship that way.

I agree with Shorinryu Sensei for the most part. But here are a few things I have made part of my style: 1. Play to the judges. Make sure they notice you first by showing good spirit and being the first to attack. That way they'll be watching you and see your scores instead of your oppenents. 2. When you attack, position yourself so that the majority of the judges can see your score. This is hard to get used to doing. 3. After setting the pace I usually back off a little to see what my opponent has. If he's aggresive then I'll have his timing down after a couple of flurries. Then he's all mine. 4. Be sure to yell when you hit, and when you get hit. 5. Don't get hit.

Why is this always the question asked when the topic of youth black belts comes up? I've seen it on many, many MA forums. It has divided nations! OK, maybe not nations, but I've seen some violent arguments about it. If a youth should not be a black belt because he can not defend himself PHYSICALLY against an adult, then that rule should also apply to adults. An adult should not become a black belt unless he can beat every other adult. Therefore, there should only be one black belt in all the world, right? Why not give youth the same allowance in physical self defense you give adults? If the youth can defend himself against other youths near his age, size, weight, whatever, why not give him credit for that? Would you deny a 55 year old adult his black belt because he can't beat up a 28 year old adult? I've actually witnessed my son, when he was in grammer school, attacked after school by two older upper classmen. After trying to avoid violent behavior, one put him in a full nelson and rammed him into a pole. A few seconds later that kid was on the ground doubled over and the other kid was fleeing. My son wasn't even a black belt at that time. Then I've seen an adult black belt get his butt whooped by one guy in a street fight. So, who gets credit for being able to defend himself in the manner that a black belt should? We have a student who has been competing in the adult division in local tournaments since he was 16 (see my post in Korean Martial Arts..Boards Broken). And he's won all his matches but one. And in that tournament there was a grand championship where anybody could fight for the title. He won that, beating the adult that he lost to earlier in his bracket. I've seen him do a double spinning kick that knocked an adult out of the ring who was more than double his weight. Then I see the opposite too. There is a McDojo around here that has a 5 year old girl who can't tie her shoes wearing a black belt. Yeck, even I could take her on! Geez...and I promised myself I wouldn't get involved in this sort of topic!!

We have an 18 year old that started doing that when he was 16. He wears those light weight martial arts shoes when he performs the kick. He does a 360 flying roundhouse kick, hitting the apple at about eight feet up. Here's photo of him: http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/thanh01.jpg -

Thruhiker wrote: ROFLMAO That has got to be my all time favorite reply I've ever seen. Even better than my own snappy, witty replies. The three I think would (no pun intended (wood)) apply here are: 1. Four boards using a technique where you jump and execute double vertical punches and double front kicks, striking all the boards at the same time. I broke all 4 on my first attempt. 2. Six boards with a knife hand chop. The boards were suspended across two cynder blocks, so this was a downward chop. 3. Five boards with a down punch. The boards were suspended across two cynder blocks, thus the 'downward' description. My knuckles have never been the same since. -

Red J, Yes, we evacuated yesterday. We left the New Orleans area at 2:30. It took about an hour to get on the Causeway Bridge (about 1 mile from my house). It's a 24 mile bridge. It took about 2.5 hours. The trip to where we are now would normally take 5 hours. We got here at 4:30AM, that's a 14 hours drive. It's was gridlock central!!! A ROYAL PAIN!!!!!! Right now I'm at the town's library. My son had some eBay payment to make, so we brought him here. I took the oppertunity to drop in on the forum. I'll probably head back home early Friday morning.

Red J, Thanks. I lived through Betsy, Camille, Andrew, and many more. They are no fun. I won't be messing around with this one.

blocks and counters for backkick in sparring
Kicks replied to dear john's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I do exactly that, but only different. (Hmmm, did that make sense?) From a closed stance I'll fake an attack. When my opponent executes a back kick, I'll draw slide slightly back to get out of range of kick and then throw a rear leg roundhouse kick instead of a punch since my leg is longer than my arm it gives me the reach I need to land the counter attack. -
LOL, you too?! I thought I was the only one with a warped mind!

yikes! Looks like it's veering my way now!

Me too, I'd love to be able to pick up a piano, but I haven't been to the gym in years. I'd probally throw my back out.

This is incredible, 1 tropical storm and 3 hurricanes in a month's time! As much as I don't want to see Ivan hit FL, I do hope it stays east of us (New Orleans). Hey, nobody's using Alabama and Mississippi right now, that might be a good place. Just joking ya'll!!!!
