Ted, Welcome to KF. At 34 you're not too old. I started TKD at 35 after 17 lay off. Whatever you choose to do, give it your all!

OOPS! Girls what do you think?
Kicks replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wow! This is an old thread revived. Any of those old posters sill around? When I spar with females and I happen to contact a private part, I say "Sorry" quickly and almost passively. I don’t make a big deal over it and they seem to appreciate it for: 1) its an apology out of courtesy 2) not much attention was made out of it. 3) They acknowledge the fact that these kinds of things will happen. I think females, no matter what age, pre-teen, teen, young adults and on up should realize contact like this is possible in a class room practice session. However, I'd look out for a few signs of possible abuse: 1) The same person always seems to be the one making contact to private parts. 2) It happens in a private session when no one else is around to see. -
See if anything on my Physical Fitness and Tournament Training website intrest you: http://www.livaudaisnet.com/mafit/mafit.htm

I live in New Orleans, I have to drink coffee. It's part of our heritage.

Could it be they don't want to take any ridicule that may come their way?

Are there any KF members that are XMA practitioners? Would an XMA practitioner be a member of a MA forum or Gymnastic forum? Or both? I'm not being judgmental, I truly would like to know.

Dogs are sensitive to a class of chemicals called methylxanthines. Caffeine and theobtomine are members of that family. Dogs simply cannot metabolise and excrete methylxanthines as efficiently as humans. So the 'poisions' keep recycling through the animal. The lethal dose of sweet milk chocolate for a dog is 2 oz per kill gram of bodyweight. For a 5 kilogram dog this would be about 280 grams. A lethal dose of milk chocolate for a 25 kilogram would be about 1.4 kilograms. Dark chocolate is at least 10 times as lethal. A 25 kilograms dog could die from the methylxanthines in 5 ounces. Another way of looking at it is by using a 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose; it comes out roughly as: 1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate 1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate 1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate. Symptoms include vomiting, hyperactivity, restlessness, hypersensitivity to touch ( a dog will jump when touched) very rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing rate, and diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. Also a loss of control of leg muscles, muscle tremor seizures, general weakness, coma and finally death follow. There is no specific antidote for this poisoning. And the half life of the toxin is about 18 hours. Induce vomiting in the first 1-2 hours if the quantity is unknown. Administering activated charcoal may inhibit absorption of the toxin. An anticonvulsant might be indicated if neurological signs are present and needs to be controlled. Oxygen therapy, intravenous medications, and fluids might be needed to protect the heart. I had a Shelty that survived eating one of my kid's Easter bunnies, so you never know if you'll get lucky or not. Back on subject... I like chopping up chocolate eggs and sprinkling it in my Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream. My doctors hates when I do that!

For now on, when I have a bad day I'll think of you and realize it could be worst. That'll make me feel much better. Hee hee.

Happy Easter to All don't eat too many chocolate eggs!

psychomom, That's exactly what I'm talking about and how it's being done. When she spars adults and teenagers, its in a supervised, training environment. The older students are just giving her a harder workout then the kids her age and size would. The adults are all BBs (a few 5th dans) so I know its controlled. Heck, I hit her harder and giver her a rougher time then they do and she hangs in there. Last week when we were sparring I told her she isn't doing enough head shots. After explaining to her the proper time to do a roundhouse to the head I said "OK, let's go", and WHAM! she kicked me in the head!

the other day I selected TKD and mentioned that you should also include Hapkido, since I also have a BB in that. However, I can't select that one. It seems you are limited to just one selection. Can your poll allow for those who have BBs in more than one style?

Congrats!!! The first time a lower rank sees you wearing a black belt and ask you for help and you don't know the answer...that'll take care of any inflated ego.

New Orleans, LA WTF TKD, Hapkido 4th degree black belt

I'm no expert on sai, but from I have seen (learned) is that you can have one tucked in your belt in the small of your back. It's used to replace a sai that you would throw, so it's like a backup, or just a third sai. Maybe you cam incorporate a throwing sai to be the one you keep tucked away. A normally balanced sai can be thrown close range without it turning over. ie: thrown at the foot. After doing this throw you can then reach for your third sai and do your long distance throw. So maybe you can save some cost by just having one made for longer distance throwing w/o turning over.

Being FEMALE is causing a slight problem...

I'll have to agree 100% with you on that one. Yea, this could be the problem. -
I was once walking through a parking lot when I saw a man in a car grab the lady sitting in the passenger seat by her hair and started punching her head while still holding on to her hair (sort of like a yo-yo). I went to his side of the car and started shouting and banging on the roof leaving some dents. He looked scared to death and let go of her. The lady got out and walked off. He drove off in the opposite direction. I never learned the story behind what was going on.

need to include Hapkido

OIC. Yep, no sense in letting an adult get beat up by a kid.

In our TKD one-steps we do have takedowns and sweeps. We do one similiar to the one the OP described. Attacker steps in with punch; defender steps back and blocks and grabs attacking arm; pull arm towards defender's hip and execute side kick to attacker's ribs; immediately use same leg to hook kick to head (coming from around back of head and over the locked arm) and roundhouse to face. To me it seems this technique would leave you standing on one leg too long and vulnerable to being pushed down, but you never know if in 'real life situation' that the side kick would immobilize the attacker enough to stop any further aggression. But hey, it's a technique I was required to learn, so I did.

I thought the same until I actually got involved in compitition. There's a certain rush you get when competitive sparring. When I first started I was quite nervous, and even somewhat scared. I was always the oldest (over 35 yo) and lightest in my division. There's a wonderful satisfaction and confidence in yourself when you conquer fear.

TSD Y049, he'll probably get the idea to start washing when its too late; when he starts to get those nasty, embarrasing, yellow stains in the arm pits.
