Psychology of pressure points?
shotochem replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I believe you nailed it on the head. No 2 people are exactly alike. The pressure points will be in about the same place on everyone but you have to be exact in your application or they will not work effectively. Just 1cm off and your partner will be stareing at you asking are you doing it yet? -
Actually, that can be a very attractive look Pardon me while I step into an ice cold shower........

It's funny, I never realized how good some of the women I train with look. I hardly reconized them when we were all dressed up for a party. No, I'm not blind. It's like them being your sister. You work hard and train together but separate any thoughts of anything else in the dojo. It's a matter of respect. Not that I mind having someone that is easy on the eyes around.

Hi All, For me it was they day I finally relaxed my shoulders for the first time. I had just returned from an injury and I was hesitant to really unload, I just took a little somthing off that first punch then It just felt different all of a sudden(like when you get a good pitch and hit it on the sweet spot of the bat) the punches were flowing faster and crisper than before and the kicks just started popping. Less tension= more speed, more power. I figured out how to use my technique and not my strenght. Who wouldda thought???

Another trick not to loose your pants. After you make that first tight tying, simply roll the waistband and tuck the whole waistband under it self. The furthest your pants could ever drop is to hip hugger level. It will also raise your pant legs an inch or 2 higher from the floor.

Way to go Mill. The one thing the young guys forget is that in 10-20 yrs they will be older just like us. I find that now after training for years, I need more than MA training to keep the weight down. I really don't think it is metabolism. It may be that your body just gets used to what its doing and does it more efficiently with less energy to get the same net result. I dropped 50+ lbs from when I started MA. Over the last couple of years I still train the same amount (3-4 classes a week), I eat much healthier, and really haven't found a good reason why I put on aboult 15lbs. I just don't get it big arms and chest, gig legs not flabby anywhere .... except....... in the gut. sit ups, crunches, leg lifts, squats????? They do nothing. Go figure?

Black Belt gets knocked out
shotochem replied to kyokushin_coe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well I've said it before I'll say it again........ "A belt only cover 2" of your ***" The rest is you. The only person you are fooling is yourself when you have false confidence. Never underestimate anyone. The fool was lucky he wasn't stabbed or shot. I betcha he won't be walking around in his uniform again. -
There are no mistakes, only revisions...... I went through quite a few changes on our kata over the years. I expect many more. He really is a pleasure to train with in person. It's one of my few regrets that I will not have the opportunity to train with him again as I left my previous style and organization. We grow. We change. We move on.

I had the pleasure of taking a seminar with him earlier this year. Its hard to believe hes in his 70's. He looked and moved quite well. He is not only highly knowledgeable and one of the last direct students of master Funakoshi, but a genuine nice pleasant person to talk to and train under. He was more than willing to answer any questions and explain this until you understood them.

They have more contact and better technique in our childrens classes than they do on that show. It just makes me so proud to study MA. On second thought after watching those guys........ Maybe I don't suck as bad as I thought.

This is so not normal 5' 5" with a 30" reach My ancesters must have been swinging from trees.....

I haven't lifted in years. I'm a body weight excerscise guy. Now you got me thinking. I'm going to give it a try. I never really though about it. I could always lift up heavy objects off the ground a lot better than I could bench press. Do long arms adversly affect the bench press???
-
Hey!!!! I resemble that statement. I'm on the vertically challenged side myself but I have unusually long arms for my size. In fact my arms are a little longer than my legs and I can punch and kick at basically the same range. (I know this can not be normal ) This helps with the getting in and not getting pummeled dept. But, you still have to get in first. Counter, circle and move in. Don't engage directly come in at an angle and always keep moving. It just takes time and you will learn to work with what you have.

what martial arts book should i choose
shotochem replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The Unfettered Mind was written by Takuan Soho. I highly reccommend this one. It is good for people who think too much . The book of 5 rings is another standard that all should read. Also don't forget the Art of War. This book is not just about strategy but human nature and I find it amazing how undated its concepts are and how it still applies today. -
Tae Sabaki. Parry and counter. Keep in motion and keep circling your opponent. Keep him off balance so you can move in and attack then retreat. It's the same thing as when a smaller person fights a taller one.

I found that a session or 2 with someone of a different style tends to get me fired up again.

Sci-Fi Geek Question
shotochem replied to bat in a birdless village's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Maybe you are right. If it would scream in pain whenever I hit it right, it would be an excellent motivational tool. We could even have the simulation take the form of anyone you want to throw a beating. (your Boss, your ex, telemarketers ect....) Talk about stress relief, I can project my wildest desires and not get arrested. I can now see the genius of it. I will now meditate and dream up my first simulation while you guys work on making my dreams come true. -
Sci-Fi Geek Question

A computer can never replace real training. Pain and real live feedback are a powerful, yet stimulating tool. -

Which Karate Forums Member Would You Most Like To Meet?
shotochem replied to Sohan's topic in General Chat
)What!!! You guys are having a party and no one is bringing a good bottle of SCOTCH???? How uncivilized. I'll have to come along like a missionary and convert you all to the glory of my spirit of choice. (plus it makes a great marinade!!! ) -
Remember, in application the movement is not really slow. Could be a lot of different things... grab arm with left hand and stretch across opponent with right is a good elbow hyperextension shoulder dislocation takedown or grab on and dig that noogie into the opponents eye, ear, neck, under arm, or in the baby back ribs. In the kata however, I usually do the last movement in 5-6 seconds to full extension.

A little bit here and there in the regular classes for us. All the time in the advanced adult class. Then of course it's a bunch of us before or after class trying stuff out to see if it works.
