At what age is it best?
Hudson replied to yireses's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yarr, I wouldn't have a quarrell with anyone teaching as long as they are a proper role model and focus more on fitness and mentality over technique, because a 7 year old does not need to know how to do a joint lock. -
The Four Wude
Hudson replied to dippedappe's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Well... that was informative. Anyway, interestingly enough if you a do google search, one of the top hits is an artical on Martial Morality by Shou-Yu Liang (http://www.shouyuliang.com/newsletter/v3n1/v3n1a1.shtml) outside of that, all I got was Shenmue II. As it would seem, take away the "Four" and you get all sorts of interesting topics on "Martial Reality" -
Well, I tend to go with the old school of thought which is: Gain mass: Take in extra calories Lose weight: Reduce calories Now, obviously this would make gaining weight and losing body fat at the same time absolutely impossible to do under normal circumstance. That's why there you'll hear about people either "bulking", wich is putting on muscle mass, or "cutting", which is reducing body fat. So my suggestion is to first find yourself a good diet plan. It should include plenty of carbohydrates in the morning, and less in the evening, and protein at each meal. Diet is the most important part, believe me. Next you need a good workout plan. There are plenty of books and resources available on this, find one that works for you. I would suggest going to https://www.bodybuilding.com - they have a great amount of knowledge there. Then, when you have gained sufficient mass, you just need to start cutting calories and doing lots of cardio. That will let you get to your target body fat and you'll be lean and mean. And I know I mightve made this sound easy in those few paragraphs but make no mistake, it's extremely challenging to get into great shape like that but the payoff is great.

Yeah, the only problem with raising your feet is its targeting different muscles. Eventually they'll be delt pushups. I'd invest in some dumbells if you don't have a gym.

I can't believe I asked this question, I knew I had heard the answer a long time ago. "Kick Faster" I think it's a Bruce Lee qoute

How are you doing them currently? Try keeping your elbows tucked in at the side, doing them with your fingers pointing back, with weight, etc;.
-
That goes for anything, it's usually better to get in food then in supplement.
-
Try em close to a wall so you can just lean into the wall when you're about to fall. And uh, practice practice practice. Handstands are well worth it once you can do handstand pushups.

Oh, yeah. It's a joke. It's the "Ultimate" art because it's street effective and hardcore. No McDojos. You have to kill a man to be 10th dan. It's that hardcore.

I'm about to call my doctor - I have a test today and last night I managed to do something that caused the upper part of my hip to feel really tense when I put weight on it. I was practicing my front thrust kicks and something just didn't feel right when I set it. What the hecks going on? I can't have something like this during a test!

6 nights a week of MA and you can't drop the weight? Sounds like a nutrition problem. Drop some carbs and overall reduce your calorie intake. I didn't say lose all carbs, mind you. Check out the CKD (Cyclical Ketosis Diet) and also, if you need more cardio, check out HIIT training. Google search it.

I really have thought about this alot and I don't know why I train martial arts. I guess it's because I strive to be better then I was yesterday, every day.

I have no ACL. Oh well. I was in a brace for a while, but I had a great physical therapist, and my knee has not given me problems since. And it's been a while.... a long while.

What are some styles that practice joint locks as a good part of curriculum? I know of Hapkido and some styles of Kung Fu, but what else out there?

what would 'impress' you more?
Hudson replied to Drunken Monkey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hmmm.... Quite interesting. A student should know enough to use a proper technique, rather, know enough to avoid using an improper technique. And the teacher should teach that way. -
To become better at martial arts.

I'm going to step down from arguing, just because it fills up this thread with useless posts that have no relation to the topic. Zhong Gau, my sincerest apologies if you picked up any sort of attitude from my post - it was not my intention just as you did not intend for me to pick up any attitude from your post.

Eggs eggs eggs! Egg protein from egg whites (Get some pasteurized egg whites) Milk, watch the fat in it though. I can't reccomend protein bars, they're mostly crap. Eat a handful of peanuts. Isopure sells a really nice zero-carb protein shake.

Sparring gear (chest protectors in particular)
Hudson replied to ufaded's topic in Equipment and Gear
I didn't realize that chest protectors were required? -
Whatever Mente intended to do he did not express clearly as even you have only theories. Don't offer up just that he's a no-faced antagonist with lots of experience in "wushuiness" with a holier than thou attitude - you speak only for yourself. And for the record, you sound like a kid. Attacking someone's martial arts skill because of a verbal debate? Immature. Please refrain from posting things like that, even if you are entitled to your freedom of speech.

Kung Fu Legends
Hudson replied to cymry's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The story as I know it is mythological, when 8 immortals went to a banquet and became intoxicated, and when the guards tried to capture them (with malicious intent) they developed a new style on the spot. As far as the mantis style, the story I hear from that is there were two masters, who sparred over 100 times and the one always came out on top. the winning one left for a while and the losing one was troubled until he saw a mantis fighting (something) and win, and then proceded to capture mantis to study their behavioral patterns, and understand how he could apply the mantis claw using a human hand. Winning monk comes back, they spar, and he is easily overtaken by the mantis style, and voila, mantis style kung fu. -
Dragon Stance
Hudson replied to Sparky's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Yup. Looks pretty much like what karate guys have as a sanchin-dachi. -
Thank goodness you're using real nunchuku. Padded ones bounce and when you switch to real you don't know how to use them.

I'd rather have the sword - if you're talking Katana or Dao. If we're talking one of those crazy ones - nodachi, zodachi, odachi, or whatever they're called, I'd rather have a knife then one of those.
