18 Feb 2016. -60min Kyokushin class.
-
Nice pick up! Its difficult to critique yourself without someone there to oversee form. I generally start in a standard stance and posture, with left hand slightly forward, and tend to reset to that position, but once i going (heavy bag or sparring) its really just going with the flow, constantly moving, switch kicks and sabaki. funny thing is, I am right handed, but my left is quicker in a jab and stop hit, and more powerful in a lunge. I've just learnt to live with it and develop my style around my strong points

Its a great feeling assisting the junior grades, and being in a position to drive them to further greatness Hawkmoon! Instructing is one of the things I miss most about not having the dojo easily accessible to me at the moment.

Nice work mate! Running has never been my forte - in fact I really dislike it, and only do it because I know it will improve my overall fitness. I like interval running. Sprint 15sec, Fast Jog 30sec, slow jog/powerwalk 30sec. Rinse and repeat for 20-30min. I've seen good gains in my stamina and ability to hold running pace for longer doing this too.

Experience zero gravity in space, not the parabola flight, but legit like a spaceman Skydiving is great, but I think zero-G would be something else! I could be the first person to pull off a 70000 degree spin kick :D Im with Zaine on the island, build a sanctuary and training centre where all were welcome - An island actually went up for sale around here recently - 300 acres and a personal airstrip for 1.6million..... Do nothing but train, teach karate, and tinker mad-scientist style in my workshop (which I would also need to build). -

I don't think there is a black and white (or black and blue?) answer here. Some will advocate grappling, some striking. I think it will depend on the scenario, and intensity of the attacker, and the level of response accordingly. Then of course there is the ability to explain your situation to law enforcement and potentially in a Court. If you are a previously convicted criminal known for violence, then there is little chance of pleading self defence, whereas if you are a worker in a prominent position, it is likely to change the perception of law enforcement and the Courts..... Also, the environmental situation - were you leaving a bar at 2am after night out, or leaving the supermarket at 3.30pm?...... Really, the list of variables is too great to give definitive answers, and all may have some bearing on your ability to plead "compliant" or "kind" self defence. It does not matter if you choke someone our, lock them up and tear an arm muscle, or punch them in the face. Violence is violence, and self defence is self defence, but proving such involves different elements altogether. In so far as teaching defensive elements - I am a firm believer that simple is better. Disarm, immobilise, move out. Simple tactics, not so simple to get everyone effective in adrenaline fuelled stations, irrespective of mental health.

I've been limited to Hokama Kobudo in my training, as well as my training in Arnis with staff and stick work. Do you have any links, videos or links you can share on Yamane-Ryu? You have sparked my interest.

Great interpretation, and important points in my opinion. It took me 20 years for my instructors to open up this method of sanchin, past the simple tension and conditioning methods, but it opens up a new world when you're doing it. As for the most important kata, well thats up to interpretation
