  2. Moooooooo.......that's cow for
  3. Hi, Welcome to KF!
  4. The school I am looking at charges $100.00 per month or the one year option, but I am happy with the background of not only the school but the Instructors. From what I've seen through photo's of the school itself I am excited. The school has plenty of floor space, equipment, and time 9a.m. to 9p.m. M-F, 9 a.m to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. I can understand your frustration, but you'll be OK, keep looking. Do as much research as you can while you search and no one can stop you from training (it's free!). You can excersize, work on your cardio, and if you have ever seen a square-horse stance try 3 to 5 minutes with the top of your thighs parallel to the floor.
  5. One that provides you with all the tools you need and acts as a springboard for your own imagination to create! I am at times in awe from what I've read here at KF, this is one of those topic's that make me happy that I got involed in martial arts. Those of you that have posted your opinion give me fuel to not only train, but to push myself to become better than yesterday and meditate on what could be possible for tomorrow. I salute you all!
  6. As I've said in another post when I attended my first school we didn't have a ranking system to speak of other than student, disiple, then teacher. That was enough for me, but I can see how ranks, belts, sashes provide all kinds of reasons for use. But to be honest the little boy in me thinks they are fun! fun to wear, display, aspire towards! Growing up I was in the Boyscouts of America and those patches were worth thier wieght in gold to me and my friends, after all a child can dream, can't they ?
  7. Kwa Chui; this is a backfist or vertical back strike. Jong; this is a powerful uppercut. Pek chui; this is a vertical hammerfist aimed straight down on the opponent's head, neck, or back. Biu jong; this is a horizontal forearm strike aimed at an opponent's chest. Kup chui; sometimes called a "stamping fist" is just that. Sow chui; this is the knockout punch of choy-li-fut!
  8. Mu Ryuk it sounds to me like your hungry, I say fill your plate and eat, if that dosen't fill you up go back for seconds!
  9. I don't own a Gi so I have to wear chinese silk screen uniforms........(darn)
  10. Great Article WW , I hope that younger people will read this and at least give it some consideration and remind all of us to stay focused on why we train with respect for one another.
  11. Hanging bags, one fairly large nylon bag filled with rags with allow you to work on punching through your target without damaging your hands. One small canvas bag fill with sand to help condition your knuckles and work on your hip and waist rotation while delivering a strike. A normal punching bag for kicks, punches, etc. Wooden dummies I think are nice to have to condition the forearms, shins and eye-hand co-ordination placing small bag targets in key locations on the dummy.
  12. Because of my current location I have built a video library as instructed by my Grandmaster via a distance learning program. I like them for what they are but I have some years of training in school so as I watch the videos I know what is being explained as opposed to a beginner never having been Instructed in person. I strongly suggest that anyone beginning a martial art get trained from an authorized Instructor for at least two years before using video tapes.
  13. When I was in school we (the students) would take turns cleaning, but I wish I would have taken more time to appreciate my school. I also think it helps mentally, spiritually add to one's training. As giving a Dojo or School the respect to train, cleaning give's the students and Instructors yet another bonding that shows to new students and the community!
  14. Thank you Kicks
  15. Hello, Welcome to Karate Forums! If you want to, then do it! As far as being out of shape that will change after time. Do some research and you'll possibly find a style more to your liking with less chances of injuries.
  16. When I first saw board-breaking I was interested, but as the years passed it became very boring. Then I saw board-breaking competitions thanks to Team P. Mitchell, it gave me a new refreshed outlook! So it's up to the new and future generations to use there imaginations to show us marvelous things!
  17. I would love to see a more (in-depth) martial arts in the olympics. External and Internal competitions. Empty hand forms, weapons, chi demonstrations. I think sparring should be done on some kind of a point system, but also a UFC type reality. I like to be able to see a technique applied well enough that those knowledgable would have no doubt disputing it's presence and to prevent the sight of an out-right brawl. A three-bout smoker is one thing, watching two martial artist use tried and true learned skills from thier respective style against one another for let's say 20 minutes is another. I would also enjoy seeing the different styles color's, rituals, and uniforms. My vote is a big yes!
  18. I automatically log in then check the forums I enjoy, from there I jump around. Somedays I go through the past post, you all have an amazing knowledge of ma's!
  19. Hi, Welcome to KF!
  20. Firstly welcome to Karate Forums! I contacted the school I'll be joining and a contract was one of my questions. I first learned of contracts here at KF (thanks gang) and all that they involve. The school I spoke with has annual contracts but only for the porpose of a payment option not a agreement of both parties obligations. As you've read so far, be very comfortable in your understanding before you sign any dotted lines. I hope you have many years of happieness with JuJitsu, it a great art!
