  1. Through out my life I have use many methods of training so I prefer the freedom to switch-up to my moods. Usually 3 to 6 months then I'll either go to something I've tried or I'm always open to new ways.
  2. DM, at the time the ''watering down" was what came to mind so I appauligize. Yeah, from my research clf has it's politics, but it is more trivia to me, but I try my best to think of my past masters mind set in training given their times political reality. I guess I'm guilty of over thinking my training in trying to incorperate thoughts of people I have never met and do not know; enthusiastic search for a nexus.
  3. IMHO you need to do more gathering.
  4. Mu Ryuk, being afraid that he will get angry or offended is a good thing! It tells me your not just thinking about yourself, but your are human and curiosity doesen't always kill the cat.
  5. As with anything, support for the people that show up consistantly get more out of it then not. I miss going to a school, I'm excited to re-join a school that teaches my style. I like your attitude Karategurl, I hope more student find what you have!
  6. PhD, Hi The site you've posted gives you some ideas. I have never work-out with polymer so I don't how well it holds up. I like solid oak, don't buy the gloves as the whole purpose of the bags is to condition your hands and knuckles. I would do some more research so you can see what is out there and also decide if you want to construct your own but most dummies sold are worth it and I'm not confident in building one from scratch. My style offers many oppertunities in the use of dummies; Sandbag Dummy Balanced Wooden Dummy Leg Dummy Staff Dummy Spring Dummy Copper Man Dummy Horse Power Dummy Bamboo Forest Dummy Very Important: Make sure the dummy is solid, unmovable, well attached to the ground!
  7. I recomend that you master one of the three, that is you can study and learn as much as you want to, but be faithful to only one art. Since you are as you say just starting with no previous experience, start attending one and give it your all. Then see how you are doing in a few years. Also I would talk to the Instructors about your intentions for respect, advice, and appropriate training. If you take all three at the same time you might be able to grasp everything, but you may also confuse the Instructors as not understanding what they are trying to teach you by showing fundementals of one style in another. Whatever you decide to do, get started and I wish you the best ! Practice, Study, Practice, Study then do some more!
  8. DM, your post never cease to educate me, I study and practice choy li fut from GM Doc Fai Wong. There are others schools in the family of which I know little if nothing about other than the name; choy lee fut, choy lay fut and there could be more. Anyway I'm not trying to toot a horn for my style here just adding to the thread. From the research I have read Wong was encouraged to come to the U.S. and I feel it is for some of the reasons given here. I have also read where even some of his teacher made trips too and that because of China's troubles many practitioners went into theater or occupations that allowed them to continue their training but under a guise. As with all of us time flies when your having fun so it wouldn't suprise me that some watering down of true form, style and technique happened because these people were never able to get back to a traditional structure making it difficult today to find a authentic Instructor of chinese martial arts.
  9. Do you yourself know if your Instuctor has trained people at sparring ? Good points Squawman, it could be liabilities he is worried about. Have you spoken with him ? I'm guessing your not the only student wondering this ? I would just ask him respectfully why he dosen't, you might be suprized at the answer or at least get a answer.
  10. Hello Sean, Welcome to Karate Forums!
  11. Watch your thoughts; they become your words. Watch your words; they become your actions. Watch your actions; they become your habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.-Frank Outlaw
  12. I was reading another post and was thinking of what your opinions were on self defence. If I am being attacked when I'm thinking of defending myself, blocking, redirecting, or moving out of the way come to mind and the least violent .........? Least violent is what I'm getting at I guess. My personal thought is that at the initial onset of the attack a block or side step will probably(meaning I might do something else depending on the attacker) be my first reaction but followed by a quick intentional offencive counter-attack to inflict as much damage as deemed necessary to stop the attacker from further intanglement with myself or others. I don't want to get into a debate about fighting, just a simple scenario, your walking along and you are attacked. Would you choose defensive moves or launch an attack ? Which to me the latter being a defence in and of itself. Also damage to an opponent can be controlled to dislocations vs. breaking bones etc...but like I've said it depends apon the situation. My primary concern is to stop my attacker as soon as possible from causing either of us any further injuries.
  13. I had thought about Batman, I miss SOCKO!, BAMM! BIFF! POW!! WHAM!nananananananana
  14. Shorinryu Sensei, out of those surfaces that you've taught on, which do you prefer ? Also, did the gymnastic floor present any challenges ?
  15. The first school I was apart of was an old Elk's Lodge that had been abandon by the Elk's members, weather the city took ownership I do not know. My second school from what I've seen looks to be part of a strip mall.
  16. Triangle choke, hi I like it, there is many techniques discussed and one thing that stuck out to me are the pictures are very clean. What I mean is that many people when discribing the "how to's" of an art give vague images for reference. I'm going back to it to read more, good kung-fu!
  17. I learn something new everyday here, thanks guys! Fosen Ryu or Fusin Ryu comes from Japan ? What makes it stand out from other grappling styles ?
  18. Freestyle orchestrated to fit the moods and actions.
  19. I started because I wanted to become a teacher, I train because I love what I do. Because I love what I do I have developed skills that can be used to defend myself. I still want to be a teacher (but that will be decided by my Instructors at my new school).
  20. I made it pass the lizzard, flying in a spacecraft pass the goal, whoa, to fast for me...

  22. If Quentin T. would direct I would be happy watching any style.
  23. Looking at my nation's (USA) over-all stats I think most students have more than enough to worry about learning how to read, write, and perform arithmatic.
