Hi People, While searching around the other day, i found a some really good illustrations of the taekwondo forms. I have stuck them on my personal webspace. http://users.esc.net.au/~axenides/tkd enjoy

if there are any stripes or things between belt then that counts as a kyu. ie, in my karate, when you get purple, the next level is purple with a white stripe. this is counted as 2 kyu's
-
The white belt thing relates to your grade on this forum, not your grade in your style. Once you reach 25 posts, you get promoted to yellow belt. The number of posts for belts is in the faq.

I pretty much figured that "kyu" was the universal martial arts word for grading. Like when you say "kata' everyone knows what you mean. I still think its pretty obvious. 10th being the lowest grade and black being the top grade. kinda like how black is at the top of the list and 10th is at the bottom. I didnt put belt colors cos different styles, hell even the same styles have different belt orders. to work out which one applies to you use this formula. Take black belt as the highest grade (not including dans or degrees), then the belt prior to that is 1st kyu, then, the next one down is 2nd kyu. etc etc keep counting till you reach your belt.

Whats you favourite martial arts video game. doesnt have to be a fighting game like tekken, just any game with MA in it. Me, being the oldshool fan when it comes to anything like the old Shadow Warrior (i think you called it ninja gaiden) and shinobi. as for the fighting games, the mortal kombat series kicks *

Zorba replied to shotokanwarrior's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts

Hi People, I know there is that state your name and kyu thing, but for an easy summary i thought i would make it a poll. If you do more than one style, or have previously done different styles, please state your highest ranking.

funny MA movies
Zorba replied to aefibird's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
They call me bruce and they still call me bruce are 2 fantastic movies. also, there was one, cnt remember what it was called, but it was 3 kids, 2 skinny ones and a fat one. i remember one scene when the parents were fighting on beer cans. funny as -
I have shaolin temple and black mask from jet li's early days. they are both quite good. Chinese Connection (or Fist of Fury for the rest of us that arent in the united states. could never understand why they cant call a movie the same as it is when its made) is a very good movie. i cant image a remake of it being better. ill have to hire both and watch them side by side.

We generally do the bunkai of about 4 different parts of a kata, but we do many variations on the one park. example, the block and release from heane sho dan we do about 3 or 4 different things.

I have never had a problem kicking jodan in my gi pants. regardless of how much i sweat. and i tend to sweat quite a bit. let me put it in perspective. In my TKD club, we were allowed to wear club t-shirt or tank tops (singlets). The only time i ever wore my gi, was for grading, demonstrations or black belt training (as the state head did not like the non-gi) Didnt matter how cold it was, i wore a tank top and still sweat.

The dvd pack is called "Bruce Lee: Platinum Edition" it has the 2 disc sets of "Jeet Kune Do" "The Intercepting Fist" and "Path Of The Dragon" I also go another 2 disc set that is seperate, but i cant remember what its called. The are all pretty cool, there is lots of interviews with Dan Inosanto. A lot of footage from "Longstreet" and home training videos of bruce and james coburn. all good stuff. Still got 5 left to watch too. According to Disc 1 of "Intercepting Fist" the official cause of death was a reaction to a prescription pain killer that was prescribed to him.

Hi People, Has anyone here done or do capoiera. I did it for about a month, but they didnt really teach the newbies basics, you basically went with the group and attempt to copy the instructor. There didnt seem to be any structure (grades, katas, combinations etc). Was this just my club, or is that capoeira in general. I really enjoyed it, but did not like the training method. Thanks

i think they should replace TKD with an all styles competition. let those that want to go in go in. I watched some olypic TKD and it didnt exactly look traditional. they should use the all style continous sparring method IMO.

Success Story Part 2: Different Perspective
Zorba replied to monkeygirl's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
monkeygirl, perhaps you can start your own club at the boarding school. Im sure that the school would allow you use of hall or whatever they have there for it. would be a good way of keeping your instructing skills up. there would be people that are willing to learn. even do it for nothing. good to hear that you have started training on your own. dont do what i did, and let yourself slide. (see my article "why i quit TKD" if it gets accepted) -
Hands considered deadly weapon?
Zorba replied to drunkenninja's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Basically, if jo blo was to injure/kill someone in a brawl, under the self defence law, they would have more leniency than if a martial artist inflicted the same injury/death in the same situation. -
TKD Blocking...
Zorba replied to Dijita's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
When i done TKD we were taught to stand nearly side on. It gives the opponent about half the target that standing square has. i used a lot of leg checks in sparring but must admit that we didnt do a lot of kicking to the legs (if thats what you mean by leg kicks) however, bocking/deflecting/evading regular kicks is something i never really had a problem with. -
at the moment my main concern is to break my TKD habits while im at shotokan. main points being the positions my hands and feet come from before going in to the technique, and some of the positioning and hip movement is slightly different. Having said that, im also starting to relearn my TKD forms (as i have not formally trained tkd for 3 years) and work on my kumite for the next "All Styles" tournament. I entered the last one in May, my first ever tournament, and went down 5 - 1 in the first round of point sparring in Male Open Black Belt Class. I want to at least make the second round when i compete next, as well as enter in continous sparring and forms.

How many of you out there do bunkai in your clubs. It is a pretty big part of our club, and i feel that it is very important in understanding the art. My Sensai has shown us that every move in a kata, regardless of what it is, can be used in a combat situation.
