  1. I Like Cobra-Kai "Mercy is for the weak, we dont train to be merciful here. Man face you he is enemy. Enemy deserve no mercy"
  2. As i was told when i was doing tae kwondo both as a beginner and as a black belt, and now that i have started karate, sparring with much higher grades is better than someone your own level. What can you learn from sparring another white belt. not much i would say. plus, the lower grades have much less control in their technique, and hence the is a greater chance of being hurt by one. dont get frustrated by sparring with higher grades, be greatful. they will be able to assist you much more and be a lot more beneficial than sparring lower grades. Of course you get the occasional high grade that thinks they are super superior, and will just pummel the lower grades, but generally get there just desserts when they face a grade higher to them.
  3. gary larson has serious problems. its great. anyone ever watch the catoon?
  4. depends, the mind doesnt just read the word as a whole, it reads the sentence as a whole. otherwise words that have letters that can make other words with the same first and last letter would read the same. Also, if this was the case, why do dislexic people have problems. also i read "iprmoetnt" as impotent.

    Define McDojo

ah k cool. both of the martial arts schools i have been to, and most of them around here, are basically run non-profit. the senseis have other day jobs and run the karate school as a hobby. smaller classes, more tuition. the way it should be.
  6. basically, if you look at the definition of the word art, and see if that applies to a fighting method, then it is a martial art. maybe boxing is not the greatest example of my point. but i know a lot of people that are good fighters that are definitely not martial artists.
  7. basicallly the article was about how people mainly use there weak side forward in martial arts. i stated that it isnt just martial arts, but that in most sports people stand weak side forward. my argument was that it is just the most natural way to stand, not that it was a strategic thing.
  8. i cant beleive that squid entered the "gross food" list what do you think calamari is. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm plus, there is salt and pepper squid, pan fried chilli squid. SQUID ROCKS. unless your talking raw. then its gross
  9. understanding korean wouldnt help, cos these are karate moves. yokogeri keage is a side snap kick, not sure about mikazuki geri. a gyaku zuki is a reverse punch
  10. breaking techniques only hurt when the boards dont break . when i do them axe kicks, i bring my knee to the side to, but i bring it inside like a hook kick (swing left to right with right leg) rather than to the outside like crescent kick. this brings the hips in to play more, cos you twist an then as you bring your leg to the centre you get more power as you untwist your body.
  11. I have seen few people on here refer to a McDojo. Can you please define this term. Obviously its isnt the kind of Dojo that takes karate seriously, but can you give details
  12. When i was a taekwondo black belt, i had a white gi with black trim at the bottom (the flaps below the belt) but at shotokan i where white. The school founders where white top black pants
  13. i did not say that martial arts is not about fighting. but would you say that mahammad ali was a martial artist? no. but can he fight? hell yes. there is a diffence between bashing the * out of someone and being a martial artist. martial arts is about fighting, but its about a whole lot more.
  14. the reason it looks like a dance is because the slaves that developed it werent allowed to do martial arts. im pretty sure if any of the kicks they do landed, you would be in big trouble.
  15. the positioning of the rest of your body while bowling is extremely important, it all comes down to balance. plus, any serious cricket bowling can bowl both hands, maybe not as well but it can be done. the point was that most things will have the weak side forward. use the theory you just mentioned to explain batting or golf where you use your weak side more than your strong
  16. yes, but pitchers and bowlers also stand opposite side forward. you will find that in most things you do, regardless of what they are, you will lead with the "weak" side. If you know of any exceptions, i would like to here them. if i was weilding a sword, or any type of long attacking weapon, i would still stand weak side forward.
  17. The Rock Face/Off All the star wars' Finding Nemo A Knights Tale Any Jackie Chan Movie. B-Grade Horrors A-Grade Horrors
  18. there is a difference between hitting and defending, if a chick was to hit me, i would not hit back, i would block, trap, maybe a lock, and push her away. but not hit back. but it depends, was she a girly girl, or a chinese swim team girl?
  19. if you are a brown belt, and test for black belt and past, does that make you instantly a better martial artist? i could train for 10 years and never grade, but i would be a lot better than a person that has just started, yet we are both white belts
  20. still tho, the thread is about martial arts. not fighting
  21. The question posted was how good a martial artist are you, not how good a fighter, or would you kick my * in the street. if the question was how good a fighter, then the numbers would be higher, cos technique and style are not as important. but as for martial arts, while it does have to do with fighting, its not its sole purpose.
  22. This does not only come to martial arts, it is basically an instintive thing. If you look at skate boarders, snow boarders, surfers etc. you will see that the right handers will mainly be left foot forward riders. what martial artists call southpaw, they call goofy foot. then look at golf, cricket, baseball. again, right handers with left foot forward. in these sports, it is the "weak" hand that does most of the work. Explain that one. A right handed golfer can play golf without using his/her right hand. Look at jack newton for an example. I think there is a bit more too it than defend with the weak and attack with the strong. At my karate club, we train ipon and jiu ipon kumite in both stances, granted right stance only comes in at 6th kyu.

    Cars

    i have a 1996 Nissan 180sx. americans call them the 240sx. its genuine JDM Kouki. SR20DE http://www.cardomain.com/id/blobon
  24. Mate, come live in australia, in the summer, i hardly goes BELOW 100F. infact, our coldest day of winter is still usually around 60F (in the major cities that is, we still have snow in the mountains and stuff) our dojo has one fan, and its a pedestal fan, albeit a big one, but its still only a pedastal fan in the corner. I once asked about wearing t-shirts or even short sleaved gi's and was cut off mid sentence, we cant even roll our sleaves up during kihon.
  25. As all black belts know, humility is part of being a martial artist. I have been training a total of 13 years now (more than half my life) and i still dont claim to know a drop in the ocean that is martial arts. So i havea black belt in one style, in the overall scheme of things, what does it really mean. I know for a fact that put up against a really good martial artist, or even someone that isnt that good, but has knowledge of close combat and grapling, i would probably get my * whooped. the ranking from one to ten would go the beginners would rank them selves low, the senior belts would rank themselves low, and the blacks and above would rank themselves low again.
