  1. How about injuries , do you guys think chance of injury is way higher in Kyukoshin? Some of us really can’t afford the risk because of work. One guy in our class broke his forearm while blocking in full contact spar and he was a surgeon. he called our sensei the next day complaining that he can’t go to operation room anymore.

    Too soon?

as far as weight I think 12oz Gis are very good.I still have my old pants and just buying tops give you some room for getting a better Gi.
  3. Jussi, Sorry , I thought it's clear that we are talking about schools and styles not katas , of course there are katas from tomari area at the present. about seisan that you mentioned, the history is not clear, seisan was practiced both in naha and tomari so funakoshi version might be from tomari , but the main thing was to accept Shotokan as a shuri style and not a mix. gotta go ,I have a question that i'll ask later.
  4. Italian_guy , there is no element of naha-te in Shotokan as I know, if there is then give me more info. ramymensa, I suggest you to read the main post again, this is a opening for a discussion on Karate styles, as far as their existence in this forum, there is no poll yet, no favorite, no best in this post. I just wanna know to your opinion how this possible poll should look like , by name or lineage or mix?. Just now I got 2 styles names that I can go and check on them at least.
  5. Welcome and good luck.
  6. Hi This post is a preparation for a poll I’d like us to create, I’d like to know what style of karate is practiced the most in our small community. Now how should we arrange the poll Here some ideas: A- Shuri te B- Naha te C- Mixed more Shuri-te D- Mixed more Naha-te E- Based on Chinese boxing If we assume there is no pure tomari-te anymore. Or we write all the styles done, then how about newer styles like shotokan or kyukushin or wado-ryu since most of the people practice a Japanese karate not Okinawan karate, also how about kenpo/kempo , correct me if I am wrong ,If kempo says “there is no second strike “ as a art of war and karate says “ there is no first strike” as a defensive art still with the idea of “one blow one kill” , can we put kenpo with other karate styles together in one poll? So give me your ideas and if you are from a rare traditional style mention your style name as well, also let me know if you think it’s a waste of time.
  7. you can choose not to test. (:|

    I am now

grading day is one of the best days as far as learning, allways.
  9. Jerry I think as long as he talks about the connection between variables it don't matter if it's a dynamic of a particle point of view or system of particles or rigid bodies, relations are still valid. of course he can't formulate the bio-mechanics of human body as a particle. I like your view about "root".
  10. mine is like "eeeeh" louad but short, like sensei Nagamine (Matsobayashi shorin ryu) , sensei Higaonna(Goju ryu) also has a good kiai from abd. mine is not good since coming from throat not deep enough. have you ever been knocked out by kiai?
  11. Dead wrong, I am a Ninj-ger and i choose Ninjitsu. Sorry that was my other personality ,the list is not complete but I put them in this order 1- Goju 2- Kempo 3-Shotokan
  12. I got a headache looking into their Katas, if you practice Okinawa ti(te) then you should end up to one of the main roots , Naha, Tomari, Shuri. These katas listed for this style is a mix of all mostly shuri-te . I love to see their sanchin if it’s a closed fist then they got it from Miyagi sensei, also they practice a brand new kata like Pinan and they put the Nidan before shodan which is a trade mark of Funakushi sensei, best I can think of is a low level Okinawan Version of Kyukushin. Considering the no rule full contact crap ( UFC in Okinawa) I am agree with the first post mentioned something about “idiots in the room”. about "Sanjugo" kata , what is it? any info.?

    Sparring

If you are getting hit in joints there is no way to stop the injury, use light shin guard and and block him with your leg, for low kicks , in higher kick never afraid of grabbing leg and take down , high kicks ?(I don’t recommend but some people block with a bent forearm and elbow hits the toe or surface of the foot ,very painful just don’t block the shin by elbow) I think your problem is your partner lack of control ,I guess he don’t wanna hit you at knee. so far grabbing and moving in would be a good option. If he use round house kicks remember the shortest distance is straight line counter attack with front kick to inner tight of same leg or lower abdomen.. also since he is heavier than you block close to your center line and use your body mass an extended block out of your body can't stop a heay kick.....finally remember you may never recover from a bad knee injury so be very careful.

    Define McDojo

whitebelt , get some fries and watch this knock out by sound from a possible McSensei http://www.kyusho-uechi-ryu.co.uk/knockout.htm
  15. Every body gave you some good stuff to think about, I wanna ask you this,Why don’t you try other arts? You already have a gi and almost in all the schools the first class is free so if you are not familiar with MA get some idea from each, also your body is a factor, for example if you are 6’ 6” tall or higher you would never become a kata champion you may become a TKD champ. If you are 5’ 7” and 230lbs you can’t practice karate effectively unless you loss lots of weight, but with same body you can practice Judo with not problem. I work every day even weekends so I need my hands and legs that’s why I never practice kyukushin karate or Thai boxing since the risk of injury is higher. So if you feel uncomfortable talk to your sensei. But bottom line as every body Said before is hard work.

    Define McDojo

McDojo refers to some of the dojos with serious commercial mentality, in McDojos You normally pay by direct credit card deduction no matter you alive or not, you can have sleep over, at weekends so parents can have some fun, in McDojo they show your parents how high you can kick , you pay not only for Gi but also for gloves, helmet, cup Bo,sai, …every thing else you may need in near or far future. Oh, grading happens very often and every time there is a nice charge for new belts, they love to start from 20th kyu and lots of belts are involved even pink with 3 trips. But no offence, the purpose of a dojo is making some money anyway, even a MA teacher has bills to pay just some of them shift the purpose from make a living to business and this make some people to create a word like McDojo compare to McDonald. I practice in tree dojos ,one traditional with a very fare monthly fee,(I quit that one for a while). One private dojo which I pay $100 every 4-5 months just to compensate the sensei’s expenses, one McDojo that I pay $120/month for jujitsu very clean, with big restrooms, big lockers , $2 per bottle water, lots of grading, nice Gis with lots of patches ….. So.
  17. here is a very good software for hard to download URLs: Net Transfer by Kevin wang.
  18. How much you pay for your training ? I used to pay $60/month for 2 class per week 1.5hour each (jap. Karate style). Other one $100 / 3 months 1 class per week 2 hours.(Oki. Karate style). Other one charges $120/month 3 class per week 1:15 each (BJJ) too high for me.
  19. $20 include belt/cert.
  20. Is there a difference between shotokan and shito-ryu bassai dai ? I practice shorin ryu and I think our passai sho is same as baasai dai But passai dai in shorin starts with 2 steps( Matsumura no passai) .
  21. Yes, I chose a bad title , it’s not about goju ryu it’s about Sonchin, I just asked about your personal experience if you ever had any symptom like the one Mark B. refers to.
  22. Britnoob 1-basics,bisics,basics 2-be careful about injuries specially in groin and inner thigh, pulling a muscle happens we over confident by stretching without a proper warm up, if you have any injury let the sensei know about it. 3-Stances and basic techniques are the most important. I normally divide a kata to segments , I try to learn each part then I put them together. Goju ryu is a excellent style, although I practice shuri-te but I love it a lot.
  23. I take a bubble bath first.then 1- I practice bunkai 2- I choose a set of techniques that I am going to use against hand and foot works all include going into the opponent body straight or 45 degree 3- I normally focus on 2 katas one is my backup plan 4- I avoid doing the katas with Kukutsu dachi voluntarily when I have even small leg or ankle injuries 5- I go early for warm up 6- do not forget these: good posture, breathing, keep the fingers together, in most of karate styles as I know a move start with a look , A complete , correct “rei” before starting is important to your sensei. 7- most of the time if we don’t pay attention to steps a kata ends up behind of starting point, like pinan shodan (heian Nidan) or Sandan, I normally do the correction by a smaller kiba dachi, wider zenkutsu dachi, a short hidden half step in nekoashi dachi, 8-if you are 6th then shoot for 4th kyu. good luck to all of us in next test.

    My first grading

Hey , i hope you skip more than one kyu.
  25. Hi I practice shorin-ryu ,when I decided to learn a goju-ryu kata naturally I chose Sonchin as a base kata later I read some articles about the danger of practicing sonchin because of dynamic tension breathing I ‘d like to know your opinion as a goju-ryu practitioners about following lines: Mark Bishop in his book “Okinawan karate” : “in order to harden the buttocks during the sanchin exercise , forceful closing of the anal sphincter is practiced .this ,I was assured will result in haemorrhoids after only two or three years of regular practice.” , in my copy of the book it says “haemorrhoids” which I think is “hemorrhoids” Thanks
