ninjas or samuris?
Ravencroft replied to JLee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
It sounded pretty clear to me that you thought the samurai would lose. although samurai were technically trained more combatively that ninja. ninja were strong warriors but primarily into stealth and assassinations. you have to understand that samurai were very powerful warriors skilled also with many different weapons and unless the shinobi was a former samurai on an average basis i just cant see the samurai losing. -
ok personally i dont even believe that he got beat by trovadar in the first place namely because his fights are kinda hard to document in the first place. but if u wanna call him a great martial artist or not thats ur opinion its not really possible to prove it seeing as how people hold different standards for it. i personally feel he was the grreatest because no one has done more for MA as a whole...ever. that and he found new ways as well as bringing light to other ways of applying the arts. He revolutionized martial arts and its training in many different ways and if u seriously think he wasnt really all that good...then wow, thats your problem.

Something I've heard
Ravencroft replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
eh...kind of. thanks to the boxer revolution alot of the combativt chinese styles did leave the mainland and many of the traditional shaolin temples were left burning. however i wouldnt necessarily all of the good styles left i believe that to be a little harsh. they do have contemporary wushu(which is a really cool art just not combatative)as well as various internal arts but i would say a lot of the traditional styles that used to be taught in these temples have left and never really returned. -
i dont like the nunchucks for combatatives. i mean if u try striking with them and u connect ur controlled momentum is gone which would suck totally if there are multiple attackers. trapping gets too complicated in my opinion, theyre just too hard to use in so many situations. what they are good for though more than almost any other weapon is looking cool. hehe. but aside from that i only do flashy type stuff with them because it builds better coordination and i think thats what they are good for. not being directly combatative. if u think about it lots of sweet * martial arts weapons dont work anymoe cuz half of them arent even concealable. i think its always good to use some weapons though cuz u can apply it to other applications(armed and unarmed). stick and knife combat is good, maybe some staff too. but to carry weapons on the street if u must i would say go with the most modern street weapons, switchblades, pepper spray, a cane even, and even guns now. i personally am not a big fan of carrying weapons around in public unless i actually feel like i might need it. but then again i dont live in LA.

Thoughts on stances
Ravencroft replied to Hudson's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Yeah i dont see kung fu stances impractical at all. like have u ever tried the dragon stance? or maybe the white crane? they are great for improving power and balance which will improve your overall abilities. but yeah like delta said dont worry about critiquing the style to much for now(assuming the school and instruction is all good)just worry about learning what u can and becoming proficient at it. -
True History on the Ninja
Ravencroft replied to SanSoo's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts

BJJ and Sambo
Ravencroft replied to delta1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeah i find them both to be very effective grappling systems. at the university i am going to in the fall theres a MA club that teaches those two styles(and muay thai too but thats not on this thread) that i believe fight professionally. i also think that they are both somewhat prominent styles in like the UFC and such...is that right? -
Yeah i know we all answered his question technically and all was good advice i just think he meant how to beat some * with effective fighting techniques...whatever that means i honestly dont know how i could answer tha question so i just tried to give him the best advice i could think of.
-
WW, well put. i agree with you i just dont want people going around talking about how he got beat by all these people thats on pure speculation. saying how hed always try out moves on ed parker and get whooped or whatever thats such a big load of * its sick. ive never heard anything of bruce lee ever losing a fight...besides the one that inspired him to learn wing chun. you are right though he couldnt have been the best because there is always smeone better in some way. i just dont think we knew anyone better. one more thing u have to remember is that although bruce lee knew what he was talking about he was kinda cocky. he went around telling people what they were doing wrong and speaking of the supiororities in his style, essentially defying many traditional aspects of MA. now honestly what would you people think about all this. you know you would feel at least some sort of animosity/jealousy whatever it may be. this naturally would make some people want to hurt his reputation or constantly try to prove there was someone better. and any reviews by ed parkers students u know will be at least a little biased against bruce.
-
Ok coco did you catch all that? this is coming from someone who seems to have been around...a lot. unless there is any info that you are witholding from us. there arent any real special techniques u can use. if it ever comes to it just do what you can and get the hell out of there but try to avoid the situation in the first place. just use your common sense in and out of combat. thats pretty much the consensus here. good luck and dont get your face knocked in.
-
Yes you are all absolutely right about this. however thats not his question. he just wants to know are there any tips IF god forbid IF he does have to get physical? not trying to sound like an * but that was his question.

ninjas or samuris?
Ravencroft replied to JLee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
so then u actually think that the shinobi would womp on the samurai because they are " 5 foot fat men?"...wow -
Oh my god. of course everyones gonna say they beat bruce lee come on. if i even hung with him at all id prolly give my self a better review that i deserve because he was amazing. he always trainied with other masters thats what made him so good. and bruce lee brought so much light to ed parkers school he taught them more than they taught him. there is no best fighter there is always someone better its just that no one really ever knew who was better than bruce. and it was by no means his fighting that made him the greatest ever. YES HE WAS THE BEST AND I AM STICKING TO THAT. who did more for MA than him? he was a guru before the age of 30. he trained so hard and studied under so many people and made martial arts more famous than ed parker could in a million years. he developed the styleless martial art that is arguably the best ever. but by far the greatest part about bruce lee was when he was half paralyzed. as much of a martial artist he was philosopher. he taught how to apply MA to life. he didnt teach people he helped them help them selves. what worked for them to be better than they ever could. hes tthe one who brought up the fact that MA isnt just about kicking someones * its aalso about bettering urself. he demonstrated that thru film. everyone has their favorite but bruce lee was truly the best. we will probably never see anyone like him ever again he was one of a kind and if u cantt see that im sorry for you. anywho this is just my little rant take it as you will i dont wanna insult anyone just sticking up for the man because in some way or another we were all influenced by bruce. hes the jimi hendrix of MA.

ninjas or samuris?
Ravencroft replied to JLee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Actually it technically means to be a cutting remark intended to wound. in my case it wasnt intended to wound it was more like a "you arent really serious are you?". i figured you werent but id figure id remark anyway just to see. anyway whatever. -
Ok i jus have a quick question, this isnt meant to be like scrutiny or anything im just curious. at competitions where they do pretty techniques do u frown upon that? because it sounds like u hate everything to do with flash. i think we can all agree that most of it doesnt work in real combat but when its for dance like the way they use, when they know it isnt for fighting do u still hate it? because i believe those techs have their own purpose in MA. martial arts has evolved so much and its not just for basic self defense or ring fighting anymore. its for sport dance health and so many other things and im sorry if i am completely misinterpreting you but thats just the way it comes off.

all good points but rather than repeating what everyone else just said for the millionth time ill say sumthing else. LB is right be conscious of what u do but if ur in the heat of the moment do what u need to do to get out of the situation. in a street fight for ur life there is no honor its either u or them. bite twist headbutt do whatever u need to wherever u need to. u dont have to be a martial arts master to know basic places to hit that u know will hurt. palm heel to the nose that will totally mess someone up if u do it right, prolly wont kill them but will do some serious nose damage as well as make their eyes water. heel stomp their foot if they come from behind and grap u just do what u must. the only problem with this is that if they only live a block away from you it could mean hard times ahead and u may have to keep fighting. the safeway is like they said just to find another way home. i dont know how much changing clothes will help seeing as how ur already a regular target of theirs. just try to avoid them, i know its a shot on ur pride but its probably for the best. and if u have to fight, do what you need to do then get the hell out of there.

yeah i know that crude fighting systems were developed way back when during the early samurai hundreds and hundreds of years ago. but the true arts came to japan during the 16th century i believe. because thats when karate came to japan from china and thats when samurai (tsukahara bokuden in particular) began developing formalized fighting systems for their warriors like kenjutsu i believe and other various forms.
