  1. I am looking for a Gi / karate suit which woul be suitible for Kata competiton and also possibly doing into kumite (possible seperate gi's) does any one know of any good makes, styles of gi's and what the difference in there 'cuts' are ie japaneze and european. looked at blitz and kwonn which look ok, it there any other gi makes out there. any help. thank you
  2. my mum and dad was teaching it and i want nothing to do with it until one of my friends went along then i became interested in it, i was 6 when i started. didnt want anything to do with it as i did see my mum and dad on nights and weekend due to competitions and training and teaching, but now i love it, and they hardly see me.
  3. dont worry my mum and dad started together when they were in their late twenties. so age isnt everything, some year later they both won the national titles, so anything is possible really. good lass give it ago.
  4. we have got a blind man, 98% blind. he is coping extramly well as he has never done anything physical before, he is now able to pick up movement and do thing whereas before he could not. one to one teaching is required, but his sight appears to be getting better then what it was before or just more able to recognise the movements or a bit of both. we have also had a man with a broken neck, dont ask me how he did it, or how it was fixed but is it was still broken when he started training, could do much kumite with him though, but he was a building labourer on a building site during the day, sure that did not do any good for his neck.
  5. well i pay £3.50 per lesson and there are two lessons a week. so that would make £28 pounds a month. dont quiet sure what that is in dollars.
  6. [/quote I also know someone who is dating their instructor (actually dating is not a strong enough word, they are completely and utterly in love, its so obvious). But it never interferes with training, and no one works any less hard because of it.quote] wow that must be really difficult for them they must be in love then, good to hear about.
  7. hello, i am looking it to going into competitions and really really nervous about it, last time i competed was when i was 8, now 21 there is a lot of time and changes happened, any useful word of advise at all.
  8. you are all right, by thime you get to this kata you are able to look and pick up moves. some sudents that i have know have been able to pick the moved up only, going through it a few times in one night, but the bunkai, comes a little bit slower or later for them, once they have picked the moved up a bit better.
  9. oh and due ippon and some fighting sparring.
  10. similar to our for first dan but we have to do about five katas and three/four set combinations which are similar to kata's. also the kihon in basics and freestyle. using hand and legs in combinations from one part to ten parts made up on the spot from the cheif instructor. also kumite, five step, three step, one step ippon, and advanced ippon (minimum three counders) also controlled punching to body and faces. then confirm it in six months time as you progress to second and third dan there is nore technique and knowleged behind the techniques as everything becomes more advanced and more complicated kata's.
  11. getting involved in the class is good, ie train with them, but you could have your back to some one, and not all teachers have eyes in the back of their heads. time with family, triain, teaching and work take up all the time so just live it all to the best, oh done forget so sleep somewhere!!
  12. to move up a grade you have to demonstrate good etiquette (mannors) and disipline to all other and also demonstrate a understanding and improvement in techniques, kata and set kumite, only fighting later on. the foundations are laid on the begining of the learning process and it is build upon ie more combinations and kata's and knowledge.
  13. hi there good to meet you. i also do shotokan
  14. One Christmas, a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones, so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then, Mrs Claus told him that her mother was coming to visit. This stressed Santa all the more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out - heaven knows where. Even more stress. When he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went back into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whisky. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had hidden the whisky bottle and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw it was made from. Just then, the doorbell rang and Santa cursed his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas Tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa. Isn't it just a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Isn't it just a lovely tree? Where would you like me to stick it?" Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

  20. wow. every one has very valid point and i am learning lot. I know our club does not ptomote any one to shodan below the age of 17, as i had to wait i can understand the need to progress but then at the same tine putting in the time training and getting things better, more focused and faster. squaman you have some very good points, as does every one. thank you all for your time and does any body elese out there have any thoughts.
  21. try two punches up then down or down then up or two up or two down hand generally move quicker then your feet, but speed will come, simple things are generally the best, complicated things ends up in hand and feet in knots and you ending up kissing a fist or a foot. not a pleasent tasted. trust me.
  22. would try best not to fail but if did would try even harder. we hold kyu grading sessions every four months too. Brown and /blackbelt gradings when they are required.
  23. ours is from the brown belt above the top instructor is there with the top grades and the pressure is on and strict, even worse at nidan. aaaahhhhhhh
  24. because it is fun. it is so good to see somebody that wants to learn something actually pick up and learn something that they would not normally do, it is a hude sense of achievement for the student as well for the teacher. it is great fun. what a buzz
  25. thank you very much. we have generally taken them at 8, assasable upoj age, growth and knowledge and muturity. any age below that and they are just to hard and time consuming for the other children. iwe always get strange comment when we do not take them below that age (ie 7,6,5,4 years old) as they want us to disipline them. oh no, parents do that. any more help thank you
