  1. Hi, welcome to Karate Forums!
  2. I'm the assistant instructor for my club - I don't get paid (free training instead), but I am on the insurance document for my club. My instructor and I had a chat about it a few months ago and we decided that it would be better all round. Technically, I'm covered under the insurance of our parent organisation (for all instructors & assistant instructors within the FSK), but it's still better to be safe than sorry, so I'm also listed on the clubs own insurance too. I also have my own personal insurance, but that's only in case I get injured on the club's premises or training with the club, it doesn't cover anyone else.
  3. lol, I get a visual reminder of Karate Kid every time I train as my instructor is the spitting image of the 'bad' Sensei out of KK1 - at least he only looks like him, we don't have to train like Cobra Kai, thank goodness. Hmm, I think I'm gonna have to have a Karate Kid moment later and watch the 3 films again. Ah, happy memories from the 80's!
  4. Hi Ed, welcome to Karate Forums! I tend to only wear heavy duty uniforms - Blitz and Tokaido are my particular faves, but Century is pretty good too.
  5. Hi Russ, welcome to Karate Forums!
  6. Hi Batman, welcome to Karate Forums!
  7. It took me about 4 and 1/2 years to get my BB in Shotokan.
  8. I take it you passed your Cho Dan? If so, congratulations to you!
  9. I've heard Jacke Chan described as "an insurance salesman's nightmare" because of his insistance on performing his own stunts. To get back to the original question, it can be hard to tell who is a trained martial artist and who has never had any training prior to making a film. As most stars use stunt doubles (even the MA trained ones), then camera angles, clever shots and goos use of technology make it look like it is the actual star who is kicking butt, rather than a stunt double. Plus, even when a star does some stunts, the camera angles will tend to focus on what they can do rather than highlight the fact that a person may never have trained in MA. Generally, most non-MA actors recieve some form of MA training prior to making an action film - the girls in Charlies Angels spring to mind, as does Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, so even those who haven't spent years learning a particular art will have had intense training prior to making the movie, so in one way they can't be described as 'non-martial artists' anyway. That was a bit of a long-winded way of answering your question, sorry!
  10. lol, I know that well. I've only ever said ONCE within earshot of my karate Sensei how cold it was in the dojo (and it gets very cold in winter - no heating!), but it's something I'll never ever say again. I always warn newbies at my club never to mention how freezing it is in the dojo if Sensei's around.
  11. Jackie Chan does his own stunts and tends to insist on those working on a movie with him also do their own stunts. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone else who doesn't use a stunt double.
  12. Yes, congratulations to you TangSooGuy, that's a great achievement!
  13. Why, indeed it does! How did you know? lol, musta been a lucky guess...
  14. Sorry, WCKM, I can't remember the name of it. It was just an article I read in UK Black Belt magazine. I threw the mag, so I can't go look it up for you. Sorry. It looked to be quite a good system actually, though you never can tell with some of the stuff that's in BB magazine - some of the stuff featured in there is utter tosh ('secret' fighting systems and the like).
  15. Well done White Belt, you've passed the first test of any relationship - doing what your girlfriend says!
  16. Thanks! Shows how observant I am...
  17. Hi Steve, welcome to Karate Forums! Good to have you here.
  18. Absolutely!
  19. Hi Erin, welcome to Karate Forums!
  20. lol, I just asked this question about the differences between MDK TSD and MDK TKD - the thread is in the Korean Martial Arts forum.
  21. D'oh! I have that book! lol, I'll have to go back and check now about the brown/black belt.
  22. I did a quick poll with the kids at karate class once and Heian Sandan came out least favourite, closely followed by Heian Godan.
  23. Well, the concepts of Ki (or Chi or Qi or whatever you wanna call it) are slightly different from Zanshin and Kime. At a basic level, zanshin is concerned with 'awareness' and kime with physical strength and force.
  24. Good things for me today... *I got a free packet of tea through the post today (hey, when you're as addicted to char as I am - and most other Brits - then any freebies are good!) *My brother is coming over to visit for the weekend! We'll have one of our semi-regular karate vs judo 'fights' on the lawn. He's a shodan in judo, I'm a shodan in karate and we've both done Aikido. lol, I'll whip his b*tt as usual! erm, that's about it for today. Nothing much has happened to me today.
  25. Well, I happen to like dry white toast... (not a fan of butter, lol) I also liked the book too. It's a bit of a classic and I'd recommend it - along with Sun Tzu's The Art of War. That's another of my faves. Warlock, does the McDojo handbook come with free fries???
