I've found those video files at last they are here: http://www.isok.org/jutte_bo/

Sai, that's not the one I meant, it was a series of 3 video clips on Elmar's own site that I was thinking of although I think both those and the article you referred to are from the same time when it was being discussed on the Shotokan yahoo group. We've done the part in class with the catch against a bo attack but not the whole kata as a bo kata like Elmar demonstrated it.

I had a video of Elmar Schmeisser doing jitte as a bo kata which I downloaded from his site a while ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the address for it at the moment but it looked pretty convincing when he did it like that.

I may regret this but, here is another female issue.
Gloi replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Health and Fitness
We all wear white gis so I have to be very careful. To squick the guys here I had been having a problem with heavy periods and flooding but fortunately I've got things medicated and under control now. To go onto a slightly related and another squicky female problem. My friend would like to do karate with me but after having four kids suffers dreadfully from stress incontinence and because of that daren't come to the class. I know she's tried all the exercises they recommend and stuff. Is there anyone here who relates to that? -
47 Samurai
Gloi replied to Joecooke007's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I got 7 Samurai on video recently and love it. In fact I've just ordered another of the same director's (Akira Kurosawa) films, Rashomon and am looking forward to watching that. Which other films of his should I make a point of getting? I was going to get Yojimbo next. [ This Message was edited by: Gloi on 2002-01-11 06:45 ] -
This is not necessarily true. People who have strong religious beliefs may not fear death because they think they are going to a better place. People, myself one of them, with no religious beliefs also have no reason to fear death because after all when you are dead that's it and you won't know any more about it. It's the people who aren't convinced either way who have most to fear because fear of the unknown is often the greatest fear of all.

I do karate and I have horses. Most weeks I'll come home from class with a few bruises and sore fingers and we've had quite a few broken toes and a couple of cracked ribs amongst people in the class in the past year. However amongst my friends with horses over the years it's been a much different story. Most of my friends have had some serious injury on at least one occasion and there's been more than one death. Last summer a close friend was off work for 6 months and was in a full body cast for ages with a crushed pelvis and another had a broken shoulder. I've been pretty lucky really a broken ankle is about the worst thing that has happened to me. Despite this whenI talk about my hobbies people say "Oh you've got a horse, isn't he cute" then say "Ooh karate, isn't that dangerous"

Who else wishes they were going to training tonight instead of having to visit relatives. No classes now till January 4th

When I was about 11 I was getting bullied by a big lad at school. One day he cornered me on the way home pushed me too far and for some reason I just flipped and swung my school bag and hit him full in the face with a bag of textbooks. I was gobsmacked when he ended up on the floor with blood pouring from his nose. I spoiled the effect a bit then by running off in tears, but at school the next day he had two black eyes and he daren't tell anyone that it was a little girl had done it. Hah! He didn't pick on me again either.

We get told to turn on our heels and I try to, whether I always do is something entirely different.

We've recently had a brown belt join our club from a Go Kan Ryu club and he is so bad it's embarrassing. However now he's been with the brown belts at our club he's realised how bad he is and is working hard to improve. However on the positive side I know a family who have a seven year old who was having problems socialising with other kids and who joined a go kan ryu club a few months ago. They aren't bothered about the cost or him actually learning good technique. The kid enjoys the classes and likes coming home with the many certificates of achievement and little trophies they hand out and has made friends there. So in that way they seem to be good with the children and giving them a fun time in a way that a more traditional club might not be. So provided you don't actually want to learn karate it was doing its job, a bit like going to scouts or something. [ This Message was edited by: Gloi on 2001-12-12 03:33 ]

Go and find a good sports physiotherepist. My friend has had a bad knee for ages caused by the supporting foot not turning properly when kicking on bad floors. He gave her some exercises to do to strengthen the supporting muscles and they have really done a lot of good. They also have a lot of experience with martial arts injuries. My sensei also goes down to one quite regularly with an elbow problem he has and gets cortisone injections in it.

You can get these stories in a book called Myths and Legends of the martial arts by Peter Lewis I think this url might work to get to see it on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1853752711/qid=1008144342/sr=1-1/ref=sr_sp_re/026-3039069-9097233 -

Shaolin Monks
Gloi replied to username237's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I saw them earlier this year and thought it was an excellent show and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's more a stage show spectacular than a martial arts show, or so I thought anyway. I'm glad I went although I did think it a bit pricey at the time. -
I can't compare training now with when I was younger because all I did then was ride horses and I never thought about warming myself up, only warming the horse up. I think I am stronger mentally than I was when I was younger and less likely to not train because of being tired/not feeling 100%/having something better to do etc... I seem to be lucky that at 43 I'm one of the most supple in the class (which mainly consists of university students) and don't seem to have any problems with stiffening up. My only problens are with running out of breath. I find that a lot of the new young students are real whiners "I can't train I have a sore wrist / a blister on my foot / I'm tired can I sit out for a bit.... I can't do pressups" There's a group a girls started this term who I'm sure only come because they fancy the instructor, they seem to spend more time sitting out than training. (rant over). In truth I think I adjust my training by training twice as hard because I keep thinking I've not a lot of time left and also I'm determined I'm going to get my black belt before I'm 50 - or at least before I get too old and decrepit to train!!
-
43 today!! So I might just have a half of something to celebrate, instead of the usual diet coke, when we go to the pub after training tonight. Old age is catching up on me fast.

What does your club do at Christmas? I've got two parties to go to. One club is going to an Indian restaurant and we have the room upstairs and and we all have a curry. Then we drink too much beer and get on the table and sing - Well that's what happened last year. At the other club there are a lot of children and we have hired a room and the adults are putting on a party for the kids in the early evening then we are staying and having our own party later. I like Seven Samurai even if it is old, black and white and subtitled it's still excellent. What others of Akira Kurosawa'a films would anyone recommend buying? Yojimbo? Alison

I have a long haired white cat called Peppermint, but she usually gets called Puss Puss. I also have a 2 1/2 year old Icelandic horse called Vordis. I will be starting training her to ride next summer. I've just sold her mother, Gerpla, who was my riding horse for the past five years or so. I've always had a horse since I was 13 and I used to compete quite a lot and train horses to sell on, but don't any more. Alison

I think that when it is not always easy to achieve what other people take for granted then when you do get there it does feel good. I have a friend who is naturally athletic and who can do all sports so easily. Yet she smokes a lot and spends all her time in the pub and I just think, I'd give anything to have a body like yours and all you do is abuse it. Alison

I do shotokan and when I fancied trying something else to complement the karate training I thought I'd go to an aikido class. Although due to a clash of times I no longer go I found it really interesting. It helped a lot to see the applications of a lot of the moves in the shotokan katas. Alison
