  1. Just found out Saturday that the"regional" tourneyment will only be one day, and only for 1st dan and below. So, I have until the World Championships to get into the groove.
  2. He better not say that in front of the Grandmaster.
  3. Well I can tell you this much. Texas tourneyment is in March this year, apparently to allow for the World tourneyment in Houston in October. So, they must have bumbed you guys to Sept. Typically, if the World tourney is in Houston in a given year, we don't have a Texas specific one. They mentioned late last year that this might change. We just had a tourney in October, so I'm not in the mood to compete again so soon, but I'm still obligated.
  4. Everyone must try. However, you must always adapt to your own physical abilities. A modified cartwheel is typically the chosen method, where you just don't extend your legs up.
  5. I don't believe it is a kick, at least I've never been shown to perform it that way. We have typically used cartwheels as evations and distance closure.
  6. That would probably be Baek Pal Ki Hyung. We learn that at 1st degree. Also known as the 108 Movement Form, where the 108 torments of life are theoretically purged through practice and perfection of the form. Please don't ask me to quote the 108 torments.
  7. Kuk Sool Won of Minniapolis/ St. Paul 1920 UIniversity Ave. St. Paul, MN 55104 651-690-0039
  8. I don't think it's as much politics as it is potential loss of revenue. If the school owner isn't worried about loosing a few students, you can dish out more discipline.
  9. I use the lead leg to intercept an attack comming in. However, if I'm trying to initiate contact, I use the rear leg. You will get an additional 2-3 feet of distance closure when you use the rear leg kick, unless you like to skip or shuffle step in with the front leg.
  10. Sorry I can't help with TKD. Here are some locations of Kuk Sool Won schools: Bowie Landover Ft. Meade We are a Korean art as well, and study all of what you described.
  11. Nooooooo, not at all.
  12. I don't think my article says anything to the contrary. If so, it was a mistype.
  13. Oh it went fine. I made a few bone headed mistakes in the techniques portion, but everything else went off without a hitch. A lot better than the last one in August, when we went outside for the majority of the test (August+Houston+Black Uniform=Missery). I've know all the material for some time now, so I'm just sharpening up the execusion and demonstrating Patience and Perseverence.
  14. Congratulations on your daughter. Mine is already 16, and I get teary eyed when I think of her when she was little. However, you have confused me. What exactly do you disagree with???? If it's the sir and maam shouldn't be used because it gives the wrong message.............. I even address people younger than I with those terms.
  15. I'm jumping in a bit late, but good job. I don't see many others around. Are all your tests like this one? I had my 4th test toward 3rd degree that same weekend. Thank God it was before Thanksgiving and not after.
  16. My response is in the article I wrote on the subject.
  17. I too am glad our brothers (and sisters) conducted themselves in a manner that is consistant with what we practice in our dojangs. Deliberate? I'm not sure what you mean by deliberate. As Taiji said, the official lineage is from those three influences. However, buddhist munks DID travel, and spread their influence. So, if I had to speculate, that would be where the influence came from. So it would be more of an indirect influence. I have had people ask me if I was practicing a Chinese art, when I wasn't wearing my dobak top while going through hyung.
  18. I moved back to Houston, and most the schools here stick to the safer sparring rules. However, there are still schools that practice with the takedowns and sweeps. It's really up to the school owner.
  19. Let me clarify this just a little. JKN's description is accurate for the sparring we compete with in regular KSW competitions, and the way MOST schools practice it. However, there are schools (where I have trained) that DO incorporate trapping, non-destructive sweeps, and take dows as part of the training. Also, when we were still hosting tourneyments at West Point (because we had an official school there), a sweep with the joint was allowed, take-downs were a point, and the finish to the take-down (hand or kick) was another point.
  20. Work it out with your instructor. My suggestion would be to omit all technique practice which puts too much strain on the injury (All kicking IMO). You can continue practicing and learning your techniques with no take-downs, and use controlled training on your injury while practicing hand techniques.
  21. I don't think anyone was saying Kyokushin is geared for sport. Most of us know the opposite. One comment was made about TKD being more for sport, but I'm sure they were only generalizing.
  22. If you skim back through the article, I think you'll see that I wasn't going for the "fair duel" version. Chivalry: The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.
  23. Thanks. It just sounded right.
  24. The head master is a lower rank than the assistants?
  25. They won't be back in this area until the end of July.
