OK not to contradict Keumgang too harshly but if you are going to an ITF school you should know that they do do their forms somewhat differently in that they have a sine wave motion. If you want to see how they do their forms the way Choi intended...I have Legacy on cd-rom which has videos of the various hyungs and I could send one. This is their main site...well its the main site they used to have the ITF has since splintered a little bit http://www.itf-information.com/main.htm And heres another site that has clips if you want to look at this...I cant recall how accurate they are though. http://mchenry.homeip.net/TangSooDo/forms/ Otherwise the most important parts of TKD that you may not have dealt with in Karate are to stay on the balls of your feet when you do a spin kick, and remember to get a good spring off when doing jumping kicks.

Well there are official sets the go in a straight line but yeah mostly it just depends on the school.

what the right uniform?
tufrthanu replied to username4's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well since I dont know whether or not he is training or not I will just go ahead and answer the question. First off the cross over uniforms AKA karate style are the traditional uniforms of most karate and traditional TKD styles, however, the olympic places now use the V-neck almost exclusively. If your instructor is not too strict then it doesnt really matter which style you wear. As to what you would call your instructor that can vary as well. My instructor teaches american tkd but prefers to be called Sensei...usually I just call him Mr. so-and-so or Sir. The Korean terms are as follows... Kyo Sa Nim = Assistant Instructor Sa Bum Nim = Head Instructor Kwan Jang Nim = Head of a Style or particular styles main school Do Ju Nim = Founder of a Style Hmm, I think those are right...someone correct me if they arent. Hope that answers your question Frakis. -
Well I've seen videos of Tae Kyon and I can honestly say TKD and TSD do NOT have tae kyon in them...and anyone that thinks so really needs to research it. As to the similarity between TKD, TSD and Shotokan...all you have to do is look at the training of the kwan founders...almost all of them had shotokan training...whereas NONE of them has verifiable proof of training in any native Korean empty hand art.

Well 115 sounds a little high to me too but it may just be the area your in. Hapkido is extremely well round and has almost every category of MA in it. It takes about 3-4 years to get a black belt in hapkido if you train on a regular basis and have never had MA training before. Less time if you have more if you dont come often. If you get a good instructor you will probably not have a problem with getting hurt. Thats what tapping out is for. If you get a bad one your odds are very high...and thats why you need to view a class before you take it.

~Mixing of Poomse~
tufrthanu replied to Keumgang's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
We do Kalmsan and Cay Moon-which are Jhoon Rhee forms, we do Won Hyo, Hwa Rang, Chung Mu and Gae Baek-which are Chang Hon forms and we also do Kanku Dai, Bassai Dai, Empi and Gojushiho Sho-which are shotokan karate forms. I like all the forms however I get the feeling that they present a somewhat haphazard collection of our techniques. Instead of a set of encyclopedias we have instead...a dictionary, a thesaurus, a book on anatomy and so on. -

I don't know. I have heard of this type of behavior before and assume its the martial arts version of going to a neutral corner. However, I dislike the whole idea of facing away and kneeling to opponent during a fight. -
What is Hapkido?
tufrthanu replied to username9's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think we have been over the kicking aspect previously in this topic dingyuan. -
Heres a site on patterns that goes over the history of all of them before getting to TKD towards the bottom of the page. http://tkdtutor.com/10Patterns/PatternHistory.htm

Well it would be helpful if you could tell us the names of some of your forms...while its true that alot of the old timers in TKD took shotokan karate...alot of the forms used today are korean in origin...but if you would please post the forms you do we might be able to help you out.

What is Hapkido?
tufrthanu replied to username9's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Open palm strikes are used all the time as palm heels and in kung fu. I think the only real danger lies in if one of your fingers should some how get bent or grabbed...other wise its as safe or safer than alot of other techniques. -
What is Hapkido?
tufrthanu replied to username9's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Dingyuan, hapkido is traditionally big on ki or live hands...that is an open palm with the fingers extended and spread or alternately a closed fist with the index finger and thumb extended. You will probably see several techniques using these positions. -

Tang Soo Do Katas/Patterns
tufrthanu replied to dingyuan's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well I would like to say that the term Tae Kwon Do is about as relevant to a specific style as Kung Fu or Karate. A wide range of arts from traditional...to self defense...to sport are covered under the name Tae Kwon Do. For instance the style I do is fairly similar to Tang Soo Do. We do either traditional point sparring or continuous sparring. As to the forms Passai...or Bassai or Bassai Dai is found in alot of forms of karate. Also Kong San Goon...that can be found under alot of names in different arts as Kouh Shan Kouh, Kusanku and Kanku Dai. -
Tang Soo Do Katas/Patterns
tufrthanu replied to dingyuan's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The short answer is yes. The Pyong Ans are a direct translation of the Heians/Pinans of japanese and okinawan karate. However sometimes there are tiny changes made to more closely fit the particular style.
