  1. Tiger Woods might be in real good shape, but to juggle that with professional golf?! hmm.. not saying you're lying, but i doubt it. as for Bruce Lee doing 400lbs... who knows? maybe in his prime almost before he picked up his back injury. but i doubt it after a bad back. i have first hand experiance of bad backs being able to bugger up *anything* as far as heavy lifting goes The man's still a legend tho
  2. something i saw my instructor teaching once, was use a circular motion to get in close and then keep on him... of course then he showed the counter to this :\ by just rushing the person getting in close, using almost a push then side-kicking at close range while they're off balance :\ if he is good at keeping you long range, keep your movements circular - he wont be so good with hook kicks and spinning kicks most likely because all the lanky bugger needs is a side kick! get in close, and if its sparring, go for some jumping punches
  3. personally, i dont see it as a decent move in a fight, but certainly practising this technique would be beneficial to your overall punching technique if i'm that close to someone to do a one inch punch, id prefer to do a hard right hook followed by a sidekick to the ribs
  4. Exactly, infact almost anywhere a well trained martial artist can be classed as a deadly weapon. heh... quite an interesting concept mind you... "i'm arresting you on posession of yourself!" (?!)
  5. I live just outside sherwood forest so if i was ever stopped, i'd just say i was going for a walk in the woods so i had a small knife just incase i got my leg caught up or anything - a "just in case" situation in the evening woods. it would certainly walk - and just so i dont feel bad about lying, i'd then go for a walk in the forest i dont get attacked everyday, but for a small town, there is a lot of violence - i know about 20 people in this area and one of us is usually attacked every week. we dont look for trouble either. i'm not trying to add to a crime problem. adding to the problem would be using them for crime. carrying them safely with no intent to harm unless its a must doesnt add to crime or escalation of violence.
  6. Drunken Monkey, Definatly! i've just been to a place called Filey on the east coast of the UK and it had one of the best sand beaches in England... it was just missing a few pebbles at the top of the beach to make it terribly english Home is where the heart is, so you're happy wherever you are, Angel
  7. I believe the man is as good as his films. he did a lot of re-takes of certain scenes where he seems to be "showing off" certain skills of his - especially a scene in the film (gah! forgot the name! lost pagoda? something like that). where he is flailing some 'chucks at a stupidly fast rate with lots of flashyness... everything has to be perfect. Although that said - of course there were certain things he couldnt show in a film. Top Bloke imo

    Diets?

At the moment i am looking for a diet that will assist with me losing weight, because right now i'm planning to cut. i used to be fairly muscly, then i lost interest and it all went down hill - so i'm a bit podgy atm i'm just trying to cut safely and efficently, and then get back to the weight i am now. just as some figures, i'm 165lbs now, and i want to get down to about 140lbs before i start some weight training again. make myself nice and light and fit, then keep with the stretching etc, and slowly build up some muscle from there to get back to my weight or slightly above. Any tips on getting down to that weight as far as dieting is concerned, and also for building muscle, would be great! thanks
  9. Bart, I have just deleted a decent amount of text justifying why I do what I do. I deleted it because I feel not the need to rise to you in the slightest, Bart. And I refuse to argue with a hypocrite. You know why I carry, because you do it yourself. Do not tell me how to live my life, just because you live yours differently. I would also like you to stop trying to pick faults with what i say, and for you to stop criticizing me. If you have anything to say to me, i'm sure its possible to send me a private message. Back to the thread: "I don't think it would be very practical to walk around unarmed when everyone else was armed. A better approach might be to familiarize yourself with the concealed-carry and self-defense laws in your jurisdiction, and then arm yourself accordingly. Maybe you can get away with a sword cane but not a switchblade, for example, or a knife but not a gun, or whatever. And of course always be on the lookout for things around you that can be used as weapons in an emergency." - Kamidake Indeed. Also to stick with the basic actions like avoiding places with little light, allyways, and avoiding groups of loud/rough looking men/women.
  10. The majority of children these days arent even mature enough to wear a belt for their jeans, let alone have the ability of a blackbelt - let alone the attitude. however there are some really nice, kind, sweet young people out there that shouldnt be taught life only works if you're nasty. So to answer the question - anyone can have the skill at any age, even though they might not have power. what should make a blackbelt what they are isnt just about the fighting - but the attitude. if you were in the presence of a 12 year old monk, he'd probably be more wise than most people finishing their course at college/school.
  11. A nice hard pebble beach while the tide is really starting to kick in. preferably in the evening when the sun is gentle and turning orange. great suroundings and noise, lovely place to escape and remember that life isnt all work and stress. as for a location - most places on a non-tourist south-west england beach. even thinking about it is relaxing :) (though i'm sure somewhere abroad is a lot lot better )
  12. i guess one huge long road will do more for the stamina than a few short ones. or atleast thats what i've found from when i used to do a lot of running. i've recently stopped smoking so my stamina is close to zero. a boxer i know runs 10 miles on saterday, 10 on sunday, and 3-5 on the weekdays.
  13. jumping kicks are very VERY nasty. as for the flying kicks... if you see them, there are loads of options. the best being move away, wait till the attacker lands and watch him fall to the floor as your side kick connected just as they landed
  14. ack! sorry, misread a bit of it - was half asleep when i posted that! and yes, i agree high kicks are only worth it as a finishing style move when you're 99.9% likely to connect. the other 0.01% just makes you look a fool for missing
  15. i dont see the need to pick a fight with someone, and especially a 300lb bouncer. too many people seem to place their arguement on "ok, go to a bar and pick a fight with some really huge bloke and see how it goes". anyone picking a fight for the sake of it, especially to prove something, is just stupid IMO. especially with a 300lb bouncer. most the fights people get into are with people with a bad attitude - and for the most part they can give it out but cant take it. each punch hurts their pride. If you're learning MAs to beat a 300lb guy into the ground - just buy as gun or decent knife instead. it'll probably work out easier that way.
  16. "There was a video floating around kazaa called muai thai vs taekwondo, this will show you the effectveness of leg kicks." No, this will show you the effectivness of an outclassed, scared still redbelt against a very skilled and famous muay thai boxer. however yes - you are completely right - TKDists cant take a good strong kick to the leg. something we should all work on TMA's arent just for fighting remember. and as for those weak flicky movements? if they work and get the job done, thats all that matters. i personally dont see the need to try and say something is better than something else in this case due to the nature of the thread. so many styles, ways of using the styles, styles of the styles... ... another one of these "*personal preferance and development!*" situations. as for paul white... i see the need not to fight him. infact, that would be suicide. sometimes you have to remember - there are bigger, more brutal guys, willing to hurt you. i'm 5'8 and fairly weak. do the math the outcome... ... yes, me at home watching him on WWF just my 2C
  17. i have lucky ran from major fights. i dont see the point in standing there when someone has a knife and you can get away... besides, i live in a rough area and everyone has knives or guns, so i carry a blade or two myself. one time i was walking to the bus station after a night drinking, and a huge group of young men, probaby about 8 of them between 19 and 25 shouted something to me about being a "Goth freak, get your hair cut you puff" or words to that effect. i genuinly found it funny how shallow someone can be. (altho i was dressed in creme-ish colour trouers and a black shirt at the time O_O) hearing me and two friends laugh, a couple of guys ran down and started talking big. my friends started to run, but i wasnt overly fit at teh time and the guy looked pretty quick so i turned around and did the entire reasoning thing. he pulled a haymaker out of no-where, which i ducked and ran to the other side of the road. thinking about it i could have got run over, but it was one of those "move now" kind of thoughts. he pulled out a knife and started chasing after me. after dodgy and diving a few of the punches, he catches me clean in the jaw and i think "ok... he wont use that knife" and give him 4 jabs followed by a nice right hook. he stumbled around and threw the knife at me... ... no idea what i was thinking here - but before i knew it i'd ran right past my mates screaming "a ****ing knife! he threw a ****ing knife from 6 feet away!" and made it 3 miles to the bus station with my mates tagging along behind. if there wasnt a load of other guys still nearby, i would have probably taken him on, but knowing if i deck him theres a load more fresh ones waiting.. naaaah. lesson number one: never reason with someone you dont know
  18. ovaltine?! oh my god the possible accidental puns that could be made *falls off chair sideways and carries on laughing* about as silly as mine. my mum wanted to call me Kat. no joke O_o
  19. ermm.... if you did TKD, your kicks should be good enough for a kick to the midsection. if they are not... either practise harder, or look for something else my trainer is, i found out today, 4th dan... i know for a fact if anyone saw it and tried to block it - he'd almost certainly break something in their hand and *still* connect with the kick. i understand we are all not that good, but anyone doing TKD should be able to kick to the midsection with some accuracy and power. afterall... i was talking only about TKD
  20. in our dojang for WTF TKD, some of the red belts were demanded to make full-on kicks. to the instructor of course. only over belt height tho - cause knee strikes would be too risky i guess. this way, he picks you apart, tells you whats wrong, makes you feel terrible about it, and for the most part everyone trains twice as hard. of course, the best bit was when an old student came back after a month (wasnt even with the dojang then!) and the instructer said "fancy taking a few kicks" and he said "alright". front kick to the instructors jaw. instructor stood there, wavered about a bit, and said "yeah... kicking is good." and sat down for a while, hehe. the point is - sparring lightly wont make you all you can be in a real fight do what you do best
  21. thats why i occasionally start to laugh when practising forms by myself. sudenly laugh at a really slow clunk, just as my parents walk out into the back garden. they probably think i'm crazy
  22. Bart, yes i am going by posting history. i see the word "babe" as a word like "honey" or "sweetie". these two dont mean you'll spread her on your toast, or put her in your mouth and chew her like an M&M - its one of those compliments that has the same effect imo. and a lot of people i've met, atleast in england, think the same. this is a problem with the internet, but i dont feel it was in this case. i think its best to leave it here and not go spamming the thread like i have been.
  23. according to the theory of side kicks potentially being X10 of your bodyweight would mean bruce lee could generate over 1200lb of force. easy enough to get that bag to the ceiling. as for getting that kind power - be really flexable first and cut. then build on that. although G95Champ probably has huge legs, there are many who have just developed purely what they need to kick and punch, and are just as good as any other person if not better. it all comes down to personal development
  24. whoah nice research the history and philosophy always get my attention - even though none of it sticks, and thats some of the best - to the point - informative stuff i've seen around
