  1. In you club/school do groups of different ages learn different katas? Like maybe the kids learn introductory katas not taught to adults? Do older (45+) students learn katas less stressfull on the body than the younger adults learn? Is the cirriculum in any way tailored for different age groups?
  2. It sounds hilarious. I liked the sparring cow on the preview page. :spitlaugh:
  3. Okay, that's one point of view. What about doing simple things on an individual basis. Little things like reminding people: hey, it is a game the kids should have fun; it doesn't matter how much you fuss traffic isn't going to go any faster. Little things. Any thoughts?
  4. I am definately impressed. Just goes to show that a good thing really can cover the world. I still think this is my favorite club type site. By the way, besides Antartica what is the other continent not represented?_________________ Get a better life, get karate. 5. So do you think you will give it a try?
  6. The other side of the coin? :spitlaugh: Hey it is funny. May I use that too?
  7. ROFL KSN Doug. Jack congratulations.
  8. Road rage, out of line parents at kids sports, behaviour in stores and on and on. How can we, as a society learn self control? Can we have an influence on others? How?
  9. I have to admit that "The Perfect Weapon" is about the extent of my knowledge of kenpo. It is just one of the many things I want to learn more about in the future. Currently I am working on Sanchin. It is outside my style, which is Shotokan. I find that I enjoy learning just about anything there is when it comes to the martial arts.
  10. Some clubs have a form of "mentoring" or a "sempai role" when it comes to an upper belt sparring with a much lower belt. It is the job of the upper belt to challange the parnter without killing them. It is the role of the junior student to do their best. The first time one of our senior ranking student spars with someone new to sparring they are reminded of what their role is.
  11. Joe I was thinking about your response and it is another one of those things that more experience will correct. We practiced a partner drill learning how to throw a kick and have it land in stable stance with out opponent doing their best to keep us off balance. Ronryu one of the guys I have sparred with is a master of kicking out of cat stance. I have seen him sucker in all ranks of sparring partners only to blast them.
  12. This is getting interesting. It is interesting the variety of replies. I don't think I've seen a topic get as many looks as quickly as this one has. I will relay the best of these replies to a WomeninShotokan club. I am sure they would appreciate some of the responses too. But before I do does anyone mind?
  13. The summer Shadow was a kitten I was having a major problem with oral thrush. After every class I would carefully wash and disenfect my mouthpiece. But I kept loosing them. I was starting to feel really scatterbrained One day we went toy hunting. Between 2 piecies of furniture I found 6 toy fur mice, 3 little balls, 5 mouthpieces, and an assortment of other small objects. :uhoh:Guess they looked like they would be nice to play with.
  14. There is just too much evil in the world. It is allways so sad when death robs life prematurely.
  15. Wellcome This is a great site. You should be able to add a lot to some of the many interesting conversations that go on in here. Sai
  16. This came up in another site but I think the input here will be interesting. Okay it went like this. An instructor is getting ready to demonstrate a throw. He is using a small female student as a partner. While he is talking and explaining the technique he reaches out to grab his partner by the lapel. Well not looking he kind of misjudged her height and grabbed her boob. No one saw that. And he quickly corrected his hand position. After class in a state of extremem imbarrasement he apologizes to the girl. They are both embarrassed and shake it off. How would you handle such a situation? Has it happened to you? What about a similar situation with another female student?
  17. Angus :spitlaugh:But I bet it felt good.
  18. The openness and receptivity of martial artists to teachings and methods of other styles is a real breakthrough. And I think this is a gift of this generation.
  19. Oh man, sparring without a mouth piece is stupid. Unless you enjoy gumming your food. Even if your school doesn't allow face contact accidents do happen.
  20. Actually Shotochem so was I. In order to effectively throw multiple punches they have to be practiced as multiple punches.
  21. You know Angus there are some misquided people out there who think we are kind of misfists allready, because of our involvement in a martial art.
  22. Hi Slider and welcome to the forum. This is a pretty interesting place and a great site.
  23. Among the many clubs Yahoo has to offer is one Women in Shotokan. It is a club for women with all ranks and all ages of Shotokan represented. :pony: I put the link for this group in that site so I think I should reciprocate and let any females in here know that the other group is ready and waiting. Sai
  24. So two Dads have a disagreement at a kids hockey practice and one is dead before it is all over. Input? Opinions? Do you think a situation like that could happen at a martial arts related event in your area?
  25. Through out the history of this country and the legacy presidents leave behind is generally judged by the crisis they encountered and how it was dealt with. No matter how I feel about Mr. Bush I have to say his handling of this situation more than makes up for the election debacle.
