Hello, I haven't posted in a while but oh well. I'd like to discuss Bassai Dai and its Bunkai. I have been researching Bassai Dai quite a while and I know it means to penetrate a fortress. However, I know Bassai Dai is not an offensive kata. It focuses more on you becoming impenetrable. I guess I'll start with talking about the bunkai of the first move. It is some type of wrist lock, or I believe it can be used to break someones grasp on your wrist, using your left hand for extra leverage. I also have a quick question though. When looking up bunkai of this kata, I came across the term nikkyo quite a lot and I'm not sure what that technique is. Can someone help me out please?

Well, based on personal experience, I'd assume its a good idea if you train around 30 hours a month.

I got two golds, Kata and Kumite. I guess it's ok...but I think it was too easy. I mean most people start entering tournaments when they are little, and compete in the beginner division then. Then, when they grow up to be my age they are in advanced. There weren't even many people in my 15-18 beginner division. =(. I really would like to compete in Advanced black belt division before I would be forced to compete with the adults. I hope the next one will be more challenging and have more compettitors.

Well i'm going to a tournament tommorrow, first one so i'm entering in the beginner division. Just have a few questions..but I might not even be able to see them since I'm gonna be leaving tommorrow afternoon. Anyway in the beginner kata division I was wondering if by beginner these guys are gonna be tottaly new and doing Kihon Kata Ichi or something, or if they are actually more experienced and will do an advanced kata. Also, in begginer kumite, I was wondering what intensity beginners typically give out...and how skilled they tend to be. Was just wondering if you could share your first tounament experience. By the way this is the 16 yr old Mens Begginer division. Ill post back on probably sunday letting everyone know how I did. This is an AAU regional tournament.

Hi, I haven't been here a while but anyway... I missed out on going out for HS wrestling and a definitely regret it. I really think I wanted some good 1 on 1 sport competition that was nice and challenging. So my question is would looking into BJJ be a similar subsitute to HS wrestling? I'm really only interested in sport/competition aspect of BJJ..BTW I am also currently learning Karate full time.

Yea...I really wouldn't conider myself weak, or wouldn't like to consider myself 'weak'. But today we held front stance.... bout 2 min each leg deep stance... switched to shiko, around 2 min deep stance, then right after did just a exercise where you put your back against the wall and sit like your in a chair....works the same muscles as shiko but waaay harder...for like 30 seconds.....I WANTED to keep going I DIDN"T want to give up but once I fell...I tried to push myself back up...and my legs just wouldn't really work I seriously couldn't stand up that well.....at the end my legs looked like they were on top of a earthquake..this is why I doubt people can hold shiko 1 hr 30 minutes. I dunno maybe I just need more training.....

Up to an hour... Umm...I dunno...Uhh I'm doubtful. I hope you understand why.

Just wondering...typically how long does your sensei make you hold the stance...(back straight...legs parallel or nearly parallel to the ground etc...). On a regulary basis...And also what do you max out at. We usually hold a really good one...maybe 45 seconds in the middle of a kata(while breaking it down///going slowly training hard) And I haven't done it in a while but I think I max at a little over 2 minutes... EDIT--- whoops..Got shiko and kiba confused..kiba is horse stance.. Feet straight, shiko feet diagnal.

All Kata's in karate start with a defensive move for a reason....

Beginning Martial Arts - Training Suggestions
Kumite988 replied to The Unknown's topic in Health and Fitness
You don't really need to train before you start MA. I suggest go in, sign up...and the instructor will take it from there. It is the best way to go, especially since your gonna start really easy....and work up to harder stuff. Maybe sparring..and intense kata. -
Umm quick question....about my friend...
Kumite988 posted a topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Uhh lets say I have a friend...who kicked his friend in the...well..you know. By accident during sparring. Would you think the Sensei would see this as a lack of control...would the victim see it as crappy sparring...and never wanna face me again?..Er I mean never face my friend again... -
Wait...they did Jiin for a 4th Dan test...? Strange. I assume Ji'in. Is the same as Jiin. This is odd because we test Jiin for 2nd Kyu. This is shito-ryu...

Hmm sounds interesting...I dunno but for some reason I get a bad feeling about this program...like it's tied into a cult or something...just my gut feeling. maybe i'm stupid.

Traditional Okinawan karate covered just about everything stand up to grappling. That I know. Other than that I don't know much about it.

I reccomend century for the bags and pads. Not neccessarily their wavemasters for bags- they make a different kinds which may be better to use in a gym enviroment.
-
Jeez I wish my school had a whole room for martial arts... Oh well.. Yeah...they mentioned about everything...But maybe two or three speedbags would be nice?
-
Umm reverse punch? Maybe some "juking/faking" but if your fast...its the best one out there....As for an actual combo Probably face body body face.

Hmm well, the samurais practiced Kenjutsu(The art of the sword). Which is now Kendo(The way of the sword). Samurai also studied Kyujutsu(The art of the bow), JiuJutsu like you said and also Iadiojutsu. These are just a few that I can name off the top of my head.
