Choking someone out
shanemm replied to PhilM1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
usually if u have the choke in solid(depending on how you do it) 10 sec will be all that's necessary to knock them out. So for self defense i'd wait at least 15 - 20 sec before letting go. My instructor's son made someone almost pass out in a tournament one time, he was pinned for 23 sec before the guy finally tapped out, then he couldn't even stand up for a minute or 2... -
Quick q' concernin Judo/BJJ

wrestling is also good for learning to get a good base on the ground, however the standup part of wrestling is easily beaten by any experienced judoka. -

Judo
shanemm replied to superfighter's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
yeah judo is great cause it's not just a ma or a sport. i'm assuming wing chun is more strikes by your posts which is good if you have to defend yourself. at the school i attend the instructor teaches tkd as well as judo so we have a little experience with each type of fighting, mostly judo though. i bet your wrists will feel like they're falling off soon lol... -
Chicago Midwest Judo Tourni...
shanemm replied to shanemm's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
well it was hosted by the Cohen's Judo club "The Brave Way". there were probally about 350 people there competing. i competed in boys 15+16 156lbs and under...and i got my butt handed too me(i came in thrid though cause there were only 2 other guys in my weight class). it was great fun though, although a little too rushed. the judges were callin some bad ippons(it was ok though since we came at 9:30 and left at 8:30, and they were still going after we left) but otherwise it would have been a 2 day event. there were some really good judoka there. over all i'd say it was 10 times better than any wrestling tourni i've been to. -
Wrestling and Jiu-jitsu?
shanemm replied to BruceLee's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
well no really takedowns are more important for good wrestlers...just take a gander at almost all college wrestling. you almost never see them on the ground for a long time. most good wrestlers will be on the ground twice, once at the beginning of the second period and once at the beginning of the 3rd; other than that most of the time it will be takedown, standup, fight for hand position. also you can lock your hands, when going for a pin and when both people are standing up, but yeah you must immediately break it when your opponent hits their knees... in highschool wrestling though you will spend much more time on the ground, partly cause some people don't know how to block shots and partly cause some people can't stand up... if i had to pick two things for you to do before your first season wrestling i would say lift weights and stretch a lot. technique from ma to wrestling is very different in the particulars(the bases though are the same for the most part) and you'll learn what works for wrestling and not for judo, jujitsu, ect. don't let lack of strength and flexability impede your learning of wrestling technique. -
it's doesn't matter if it's feasible(sp?) or not to become that good, with or without the gi. how many of us wanted to be like MJ? admit it how many of us wanted to be farve, smith, sanders, ect. and how many us went out and played that sport? i'm willing to bet over half of us did play that sport, maybe even for 1 season. plus judo is a good martial arts for soccer moms...i mean think about it, a martial art based on being gentle. the only turn off to judo is that if you don't know what's going on it's extremely boring.

Wrestling and Jiu-jitsu?
shanemm replied to BruceLee's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
well i went from judo to wrestling and it helped a lot. ie. knowing how to breakfall when you coach shows you a double leg takedown, knowing how to move and setting up patterns of movements before a throw or takedown, and how to break balance. reguardless of which art you choose there are a few things i wish i would have known/done before i started wrestling.... 1. be extremely flexable. this helps to get your legs in and around the guy when your on the bottum plus it makes your shots faster. 2. do tons of squats, push-ups, curls, and lunges. this will get you in great muscular condition to wrestle. 3. do lots of sprints. jogging isn't as needed cause you usually don't need to sustain cardio longer than 10 seconds. 4. shoot in an L. you'll learn this but it's good to know before hand. when you want to shoot for a leg first lower your body into a crouched position(like your going to jump really high) then shoot straight for the leg(s), keep the arms in tight and not like your going to hug them. also remember not to reach but to move your whole body for a shot. 5. don't cross face. remember this, cause a lot of coaches like to teach cross face. instead push the head down and try to get out, you'll see what i mean. 6. when practicing the martial art, tell your teacher that you plan on going into wrestling. he should teach you more how to throw someone without a gi to hold on than with the gi. good luck. -
TJJ or Judo???
shanemm replied to Judo Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
if you do choose judo make sure the intructor knows that you don't want to compete(or want to defend yourself). cause i know most judo techniques in my class aren't real life situation techniques(although the joint locks and tkd are), there more towards sports. in that case the intructor might not use gi's sometimes to simulate real life combat, as well as some basic kicks and blocks. go to judoinfo.com and search for combat judo, they got the army handbook for self defense(mainly based on judo) book for dl... -

over 46 years old. any one else?
shanemm replied to quixote's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
heh there are two people in my judo class that are over 45...my dad who's almost 50 and just got back into judo from a 20+ year break lol. then their's my instructor...when i think of what he's doing at his age of about 60 i'm amazed. not only does he throw everyone around but he makes it look so easy. even a college football player and a guy who's nick name is gumbi(he's super flexable), blue and brown belt respectively, can't begin to throw him when he tries. on top of being super tough he's down to earth and really cool which is hard to say about most people who are 60... -
i meant that if you were going to fight and didn't want to use/didn't have weapons(say at school). also it depends on the type of judo you are doing...self defense or competition. in self defense there are strikes but competition judo doesn't have any. and onefighting i was talking about a model judoka...like the kid who does his homework and studies all day after school except for judo...lastly treebranch i forgot what divisions but the U.S. military teaches it's members judo as part of basic training. ps...i have seen in several places people saying that judo is diverting more and more away from it's originol form. could someone please explain this for me? thanks

no jujutsu won't beat Judo cause... "Jujustu, the art of self protection Judo, the art of self perfection" judoinfo.com in todays god forbid non politically correct world unless your very careful(or gentle)in how you use your martial arts training you could end up behind bars. in which case you haven't won the fight. a judoka's mind-set isn't "how can i defend myself" it's "how can i settle this smoothly and be gentle so that neither of us has to get seriously injured". while it may be true you can beat a judoka in the ring(or may not be true i will not say any more), in a real life situation I(opinion) feel that judo is more condusive to modern day needs.

Martial Arts ads are getting pathetic
shanemm replied to Tombstone's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
martial comes from mars who is the roman god of war so martial means war or warlike and art is being creative or being skilled in so martial arts means being skilled in or being creative in the way you do war or battle...but if that's true then why don't all the martial arts have an eye poke technique? it's creative and effective so why isn't it in martial arts? -
it wierd to know that people can die so young isn't it? when you hear about these happenings in the news they don't affect you as much as when you know the person who died. My condolences to you kchenault and to those that knew her personally...

Ever had to use your MA in a real sreet fight
shanemm replied to a topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
wow this one is a hard one... my first reaction is that yeah if everyone's packing then you most definitely should to. and while your breaking the law (and will go to jail if your weapon is found) then why not carry the most powerful gun you can find? but then I read through the 6 pages and had time to think. and thinking about it my thoughts are violence only begets more violence and what if that guy belonged to a ballzy gang? you'd have to give him you money or fight him. fighting him would only make more problems for you because of wonderful people called lawyers and worrying if the guy belonged to a gang...even though I would like to use what I’ve learned in Judo and Tae Kwon Do it would go against the whole purpose of Judo... but here's my question...couldn't this all be solved very easily (as far as muggers) by a simple checking account? then just carry $20 bucks or so in your wallet so the mugger is somewhat pleased by what you give him...it seems very simple to me but I don't have to look over my shoulder where I live. heck one night we forgot to close the garage door and everything was still there in the morning... also Warp Spider you are quite possibly the most confused person here...threatening muggers that you'll blow up a gas station? innocent by-standers aren't innocent? those are two of the worst thoughts I have ever heard and I go to public school!!! first off blowing up a gas station so you can save maybe $600 (and that's after payday)...don't be so selfish. is your 600 bucks worth more than at least 3 people's lives? and that's without anyone else pumping gas or counting the firefighters that will have to be involved...plus it won't only cost the owner of the gas station money(insurance increases, rebuilding, etc...) but tax payers(firefighters, police, paramedics, chemical scientists, lawyers, judges, etc...) . and your cost will be so great that you won't do anything ever again even if you get out of debt. and who are you to judge you is innocent and who isn't? do you know the medical record of every person who pumps gas next to you? please...don't be such a fool, we don't need people like you representing Martial Artists. mind you i'm not saying you are dumb nor am i saying your a bad person...just that you might want to think through things a little more as Martial Arts doesn't need anymore steriotypes added to it...much less crazy oh and to answer the question no i have never had to use what i know in a fight as i try to stay away from street fights(i heard somewhere that judo's harder to do without the other person wearing a gi and since i'm not to great at the throwing in the first place...heh it could get ugly) -
hey battousai16 what city of wisconsin are you from?

If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare. In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy's country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them. Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field. The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Hence the skillful fighter puts himself into a position which makes defeat impossible, and does not miss the moment for defeating the enemy. that's just a few of the many good sayings from The Art of War by Sun Tzu. another good one is my signiture

Christians and the Martial Arts
shanemm replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
but then it depends on the definition for evil...i thought it was only evil if you believed in it as a god(not sure if it should be capitolized or not ) or otherwise. i'm not saying your wrong(in fact i think your more right than i) but i am trying to say that i should be allowed to play a game or participate in martial arts(see how i brought it all back in ) as long as i don't start worshipping and actually believing in what i am doing. having good clean fun practicing Tai Kwon Do, playing Magic, or reading a book about magical people/events shouldn't be wrong to do(as far as the Bible tells us)and if it is that's messed up bigtime... -

not like most (i stress most and do not confuse this with all) Christians care about pagan holidays...i mean look at what Christmas has turned into...it's no longer just a Christian holiday. It's more of an economic holiday(at least in the US, i can't speak for any other country), and how many Christian do you know that don't participate in Halloween? and children's book? please...i used to play Magic the Gathering, i currently play Dungeons and Dragons both of which i would never quite no matter who says anything about these GAMES. people say that books/holidays/games based on "evil" ideas screw kids up and I say kids who go out and kill 3 people cause they think a book or game told them to should be on medication and it's the parent's fault...not the game's. heck, i've got a 3.5 gpa in all honors classes and play 4+ sports relatively successfully along with these games and never get in trouble so it can't be something wrong with the games... i admit more realistic games can screw with even the most sane (ie. Counterstrike) but us gamers who don't get in trouble or do anything stupid shouldn't be punished. sorry for the long rant but i'm bored and like to type my opinions. also, i mean no offense to anyone and appolagize if you take it the wrong way
