Just to make one point perfectly clear,I'm not suggesting because we strike the legs often that that alone makes our legs strong. There are many different types of traning methods that we use to make our legs stronger. After a slow process of conditioning you legs will become stronger and stronger. Using correct stances in your Kihon training will add to the over all strength but that alone will not do.

If anyone would like to see people with very powerfull legs they should go and see a Kyokushin Knockdown fight or people training in Kyokushin or Muay Thai.In Kyokushin we pound the legs all the time as do the Muay thai guys, wheather we are going to compete or not its all part of the training.Neither practice those really deep stances you see in Shotokan and I've yet to see a Shotokan man compete at any high level using low leg shin kicks. I have the highest respect for the Shotokan system but it doesn't make sense to my mind when I read what people have written and it implies that their system produces the strongest legs when it very simply isn't the case. It is important to understand the short comings in your chosen art in order to better it and you can be assured all Martial Arts have their short comings.Like people your art isn't perfect. osu.

What is San Soo all about?
Gino replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Aznkarateboi, Arguably,I agree, but any fighting art can boast they are arguably the best. Lets not beat around the bush here, that is what you are saying when you say the most effective. I and certainly many more do not exept that as a truth. -
If your art doesn't teach you what its like to get roughed up whats the point. I'm not suggesting you go to your club and have your arm broken or your eyes poked out but you need to feel real pain and shock.Otherwise you very simply are not prepared for a real life situation. Half the battle is becoming accustomed to being hit, until you have it isn't half a shock when you do,it's a bit like being a child again. You should be thrown to the floor, swept, punched kicked, slapped and have just about anything done to you that can, including locks chokes and shouting. Its all part of the learning process. Osu.

It takes many years to start to recognise the real depth and meaning in your chosen art.May be the answers will come later and after alot of sweat and blood. -

Quite right! -
I would love to see someone fighting using only Neko Ashi dachi that would be priceless. Neko ashi dachi is best used only as a platform to perform a particular technique after that you should assume another position.

Tokeabowl, I checked your profile and it says under interests,Tokin "chokin" chillin. I was hoping you could explain each of those words to me. I live in England and we use each of those words to I was wondering if they have the same meaning.

In Kyokushin- kai we don't have to wear gloves to work on bags and pads. If you punch correctly you will have no problems. It is a slow process though. If you are under the age of 14yrs your bones in your hands have not finished developing yet so it is very unwise to practice without gloves or do to much makiwara or knuckle press ups at this age.In my opinion 16 and 17 is also to young.

I believe that unless you are at least ni-dan you shouldn't attempt to learn Katas from other styles. In the British Karate Kyokushinkai as part of the International Federation of Karate we do not have any new Katas to learn after san-dan.The long road to perfection starts there.Of course as far as we know perfection is probably un-obtainable but we should never stop trying to better ourselves and never stop trying to get as close to perfection as possible. When you have reached the point where you can learn no more new Kata in your style then may be I think you can start to learn a new Kata from a different style just to spice things up alittle. But always be careful to continue with your own Katas. You can never really spend to much time learning to perfect the Katas from your chosen style. I personally think I'm a long way off starting to learn Katas from other styles I have to much work to do on my own. Osu.

Correct procedure varies depending on what organization you belong to. Your coach should be able to make it much clearer for you.

Its worth spending a little more on a good quality gi.The cheaper light weight ones tend to get very tatty quite quick.

Kiba dachi performed to low is practically useless as a fighting postion, you need to be able to pull out very quickly,if your to low thats imposible. If you want to strengthen your legs squats are good you shouldn't confuse the two. When doing squats you can dip very deep and then push up to acheive the leg strengthening excersise. Of course different styles will tell you different things but I would be amazed if an experienced teacher told you to go as low as you can to perform Kiba dachi properly.

do guys like chicks that a martial artists?
Gino replied to IAMA_chick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It can definately help if your both into MA.The long hours away training don't cause so many rows that way. As I've been with my girlfreind 7yrs I don't think I'm aloud to say if I like Martial girls.I do enjoy the stretching sessions with partners though!!! -
I don't think that the people getting into fights are doing so because they lack inteligence. Could you explain what you mean by that?I think I may of missed your piont. I'm only asking because as martial artists it is a very important question. I have a book I've read "Un-masking The Martial Artist which asks the same question you've asked and also asks what kind of person gets involved in the martial arts in the first place and why. A great book, even though some of it made me slightly uncomfortable.

Shorin Ryu, Thankyou for your post it's really got me thinking. To be honest I've never heard of this side of Sanchin before.I've been doing Sanchin since I was about 11yrs old when I started Kyokushin and always been told how good it is for you. After reading your post I have to admit that some of it does sound possible. Before my teacher started training with Sosai Mas Oyama he trained with Gogen Yamaguchi and of course Ibuki played a big part of his training infact Hanshi Arneil was first introduced to Karate by an okinawan who taught him Goju so he has spent a life time doing ibuki and he is now 69yrs and appears at least 10 or 15yrs younger.I know he is just one example so I 'm going to look into this further to see what I can find out.
