The Gracies
btroadman replied to Kumite988's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
JohhnyS pretty much said it all, if you have any other questions check out https://www.gracieacademy.com or bjj.org -
what do you think of mediocre blackbelts?
btroadman replied to kungfumaster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A lot of TKD establishments test out every 2 months, and you pretty much pass no matter what. So I can definitely see where there are ineffective BB's out there. -
help with choseing a style....
btroadman replied to Raven's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Definitely buy a Brazilian JiuJitsu book by one of the Gracies. Read and practice as much as you can, get a wrestling buddy who might be interested and practice (at about 50% speed). And all the time keep trying to find an instructor. That is what I did for 3 months before I found a good Instructor, it helped me with the basics and I had a decent foundation. But remember you can only go so far with just books and no instruction, it is VERY important. -
Got my Black Belt !
btroadman replied to JohnnyS's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Awesome, I hope to get there someday too, I just hope it doesn't take 12 years for me. How often did you train? -
aikido
btroadman replied to Sid Vicious's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have read many forums on AIKIDO, to me it sounds like a finishing art. Maybe you have trained in many other things for numerous years, Aikido sounds like a good addition to tac on at the end. Anyone agree to that? -
BJJ Belt Tests
btroadman replied to Black Dragon's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Some places give you belts by entering competitions. But basically if you can hang with the upper belts, you will be considered for promotion. -
This sounds too much like an Indecent Proposal to me.

Christians and the Martial Arts
btroadman replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that in TAEKWONDO and other Martial Arts, Christians should get involved, it is a healthy hobby and will help you take care of your body (Like the bible tells us to do). About Harry Potter, Magic, etc. Appearances of evil means things that are considered borderline. What I feel the bible talks about in that manner has something to do with your personal testimony. I don't go to bars and have a beer or whatever, because I don't want a non-believer to know me as a Christian and see me doing something that may be borderline or something that I could be misjudged on. People should see us a Holy People. Just my thoughts. -
Christians and the Martial Arts
btroadman replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Too many Christians support holidays like Halloween, most churches offer alternatives during those times of year. As far as Harry Potter, Magic games, etc. The bible tells us to stay away from "Appearances of Evil"....that's enough for me. -
Belts of Cardio
btroadman replied to RJOTweet's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I am a member at a Gym and pay a monthly fee to workout there. They don't throw in extra charges for belts every month or two. Maybe they should have belts for that too, then charge more $$$$ for that. The simple truth is Cardio workouts are not Martial Arts. Belts are ridiculous. -
Wow, had a few tears of joy there. I think you will find love with Children all the time, because they are innocent. Innocense is the key to love. But I can't leave a message without saying that true love comes from God.....no bout a doubt it!

Cute, but did you get a look of those Karate students? I wouldn't want them defending my city against the Board-Headed Brick Bodied aliens? Maybe they could defend us from Dunkin-Donuts Aliens......

Belts of Cardio
btroadman replied to RJOTweet's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I think it becomes a bad thing when people are forking out $30-$50 extra every month or two for raising to the next belt. In TaeKwonDo and most other martial arts, there is a specific reason for each belt level. Whether it is mastering certain kicks, punches, moves, or forms....there is a set standard out there. I have been to a half dozen or so schools that offer Cardio Kickboxing, no belts. So this school is definitely the exception, not the rule. Can you opt out of the belt system? Or just don't test, get out of the class everything you can without the extra payment! -
Thanks for all the info, I just want to make sure that we are talking about "the rule, and not the exception" with everyones comments. I am speaking on terms of the average JOE with my original question.

Christians and the Martial Arts
btroadman replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Martial Arts is one thing, but books based on Witches and Warlocks, and Holidays created by Pagans is a little different. -
Christians and the Martial Arts
btroadman replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This was an excellent article, as a Christian who has dealt with this problem before it is great to hear some encouragement. I prayed about it and received a peace in my heart about it. It may be different for different people. But the very bottom line is that God knows your heart, and if that is in the right place, then you will be fine. I have found that the MA Schools I attend are a wonderful place to meet people and share my faith. Isn't that what our lives here are all about? -
I was actually curious to know what fellow TKD members had to say on the subject, that's why I put it in that category.

There are 6 year old who break boards in training, it really isn't all that big of a deal. I think they are really meant to be a confidence builder, and sometimes make you think a little more with technique as to not try and break a board against the grain. Other than that I could do without it all.

In a discussion recently with a few Martial Art instructors a topic arose about how the more flexible you are the less power your kicks will have. Has anyone else heard of this? Any extra thoughts on the subject?

taking multiple styles
btroadman replied to Drunken Monkey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Grappling is definitely a nice addition to anyones resume, especially in a real fight. Most of them end up on the ground anyhow. I enjoy taking two totally seperate arts, as long as you can put as much effort and time into 2 or 3 that you currently put into your 1 currently. Better 1 at 100% than 2 at 50%. -
Belts of Cardio
btroadman replied to RJOTweet's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Maybe you should speak with some other people in class and see what they say about it, or even ask the instructor. Enlighten us all if you get any solid results. -
Brazilian Jujutsu
btroadman replied to King of Fighters's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
To answer the original question of this post......If you are looking for something along the MuyThai lines then just BJJ is not for you. You should definitely try a couple classes before you dismiss the idea solely on the basis that it has very few to no striking. You might be surprised how much you enjoy the art. If you need striking try a good Vale Tudo (Even though most don't consider it a martial art) school, at most of them they will include grappling and striking.
