  1. What do you guys think is the best art for movie making? In my opinion it would be a kicking art with mixed punches and throws.
  2. Better to question rather than suffer from lack of knowledge
  3. it incorparates " flashy " kicks if you want to do them, atleast in my dojo.
  4. SOme styles are better than others, I prefer for self defense out of the southern Kung Fu the praying mantis although some techniques are useless they have alot of good techniques for self defense. I am a 16 year student of San Soo though I have studied the northern and southern praying mantis as well as the tiger and Wing Chun. It's all in personal preferance on wich you like, choose you think is effective and would be useful to how you want to use it, so in answer to your question, yes and no. Some are good others aren't.
  5. BE AWARE! Don't be caught off gaurd or you will lose, train hard to hit hard. Catch them off gaurd most people go for a sucker punch at your face or a big western style round house punch with a wind up like a long bow so if they do that then give em a quick kick the groin or a punch to the face.
  6. San Soo Very effective for self defense the fights I have been in lasted no longer than 5 seconds. It is a dirty fighting are somewhat, most techniques end with a groin kick or face kick when the opponent is on the ground.
  7. I have been in San Soo for 16 years so I am fairly advanced in all thetechniques. Pros 1. Good for self defense most techniques are down to earth that will end a fight in 7 seconds or less. Overall it is a really good " street " fighting technique not very flashy until you get high ranked. If you train long enough like I have it covers every aspect of fight from kicking ( including high flashy kicks ) to punching to trapping to grappling. But it takes awhile to learn all the techniques. Theres not very many unrealistic techniques used it is a very lethal fighting art just what it was made for. Cons 1. Lacks grappling at the start. Lacks kicking at the start too. Takes awhile to be good at it. Can't spar because techniques are to dangerous and you would run out of sparring partners
  8. Why don't you post what shotokan karate teaches mostly and we can compare it to our arts.
  9. Martial arts were made to kill, to defeat, to win. Any you choose with the right teacher can and will be effective. But if they teach you things that you truly believe would never work in a real fight then walk away and find a better school. I take San Soo and it is very effective, if you stay with that art for long enough you learn to fight in every aspect from all 4 ranges. Kicking, punching, trapping, grappling. Find an art you truly believe will work, these here are just opinions not facts. I'm sure everyone here is biased to their own art that is why you should just look for an art that incorparates things you like for example... When someone throws a punch at you would you want to block it or maybe counter it into a punch or kick if you do then some styles like karate or Taekwondo ( correct me if I am wrong ) would work better for you but if you would drather get them into an armbar or flip them then things like BJJ or jujitsu or judo etc. would be good for you, MA's are personal preferences, so choose wisley in the one you take.
  10. How does it compare to karate in things like self defense, street fights, and bar fights. Techniques used and is it hard or soft blocks? Does it use more punching than kicking? Or throwing?
  11. How well would a punch effect a big tough guy? Someone like Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson? Would they phase them much or would an armbar or throw work much better?
  12. You need to learn all punches not just one type, but a straight punch can end a fight or stun them so you can follow up and also a hook could come from out of their view and BAM lights out...
  13. What are San Soo's strong and weak points? What are some similarities between san soo and wing chun or shaolin and differences?
  14. What does it matter if he lost or won? Did he claim to be the best fighter? No he was just trying to expand peoples minds... Anyway who cares?
  15. How does Kung Fu San Soo compare to other martial arts? And is it a street effective martial art? Thanks, San Soo
  16. Just one more thing sorry, for posting 2 times. Being a black belt gave me more confidence and the understanding that I could protect myself and not have a false sense of being able to defeat anyone. Because I was " tested " a week ago by 2 thugs outside a bar. I was walking home when they stumbled out of the bar, it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And anyway one of them stepped infront of me and said something to me about being in his way, I said I was sorry and and tried to pass him but he stuck his hand out and grabbed by shirt. I applied a simple armlock on him then tripped him to the ground. His other friend came at me while I had his friend in an armbar so I gave him a kick in the ribs which knocked him down and walked off. I use to fight alot when I was first learning San Soo but as I discovered the true meaning of it I began to avoid them and not pick them. He who runs lives to fight another day. San Soo
  17. The whole understanding of my art. The philosophy anger control and attitude towards life. I am a much more fullfilled person now, martial arts have really changed my life and outlook on life. As Bruce Lee said and the bible states " We all live in the same world, it just so happens people are different. "
  18. What are some effective self defense martial arts? These next comments are just what i've heard so no offense meant and I am not speaking from experience just readings. That some styles of Kung Fu use to flashy techniques and are useless in a fight. That karate uses to much kata and not enough emphasis on self defense. Taekwondo uses to much old style techniques like learning high kicks that were once used to dismount riders. JUdo is not street effective because it has very few if any that are tought striking techniques. Judo is effective because of the hard throws. And some more so again these are just opinions not facts, you can make anything work so take no offense.
  19. How does san soo compare to other styles, preferably from your own style so you can give facts about your own not just readings. I will give you an overviw of San Soo. It is supposibly one of the best modern street self defense MA's ( i am biased towards it soo... ) it uses your opponents force against him for example if you groin kick they, on guys mostly, they will bend over forwards quite rapidly so if you were to uppercut them as they were comming down from the pain you could do much more damage to them using less force. ( I think Yogi used a close definition to this in another forum ) THanks
  20. I'd say San Soo would be good in an all out brawl, although it could use more grappling and wrestling techniques but if you are good at it then you can defeat them standing up but it is still good to know some grappling moves. You need to be well rounded. Yogi you are correct in the science behind San Soo, it uses their power and momentum etc, etc, against them. Like in your example. Or another example is if you were to hit them in a certain place ( don't want to tell where may give to many techniques away ) it will expand their rib cage and make it more vulnerable so you can injure the ribs worse with less force. Overall i'd say it is street effective.
