Who would you like to fight?
granmasterchen replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
im right there with you meguro, that brings a smile to my face....as a matter of fact i would like to have fought mr miyagis character too. Not the real person, just the character that is portrayed....his martial arts skill was very sad, they should have hired an actor that had some skill, but aside from the lack of skill he was a very good actor for that part in the films. -
I thought Danny was pretty sad and pathetic to watch, I hope he watches his own fight from the comforts of his home and really works on his fight game, hopefully he can improve, get his problems solved with his back and eventually become a good fighter, because right now, sorry to tell him the truth, but he is definitely not an ultimate fighter

ok....im going to try.....hold the knife closed and locked, you pull it out of your pocket and hold it upside down in your hand, you now use your thumb to open the lock, now spin it in your hand keeping it closed with the locking mechanism now located at the bottom of your hand. Hold with the the blade side up (still closed), flip the top half open in your palm and let that half along with the blade fall back against the top of your hand (handle hits first then the blade falls into it) while still holding the bottom half. Now you will be making a circular motion in front of your body to spin/rotate the knife in your hand so now when you allow the top half along with the blade to fall back against the top of your hand the second time the blade will hit first but it will be the blunt side so it wont cut you and then the other half will fall on top of the blade. Now make a small flipping action so that the handle half lying on the top of your hand falls back into the palm of your hand with the other half of the handle. The knife should now be locked with blade out and both handle halves back in the palm and you can now lock it into this position if you want to keep it like that or leave it unlocked in order to do more spinning techniques in order to intimidate or distract your opponents.......hope that helps.....very hard to explain....wish i was there to show you.....i dont even have my knife to play with, simply going off of old training movements in my mind, lol.....hope it's ok.

i think the main use of the balisong, butterfly knife, today would be as an intimidation factor in a street situation, if you happen to be carrying one and are approached by some average thugs and you whip it out and start doing some cool moves, they may just move along..... as for opening, do you own a double edged or single edged? ..........well i was going to attempt how to explain it....but i now have to agree with glockmeister...it's very difficult to try and explain by writing, much much easier to explain by showing it in person.

from what i have read in a martial arts magazine, not sure if it was black belt or not, but the forms were made up for the movie, they had been working on the techniques and everything in that movie for over a year, many of the things have nothing to do with muay thai as an art, but have been specifically practiced and placed to help spread publicity to the art form by getting people interested.

I agree with you that matt took the fight too gracie and sent him home with what he said he'd do, "i want him to stand up and barely be able to look out of his eyes and say that this sport has changed" i think he did that well....not exactly as he said it, he predicted 3 rounds, and it didn't even make 2. At the end gracie's right eye did seem pretty swollen along with the rest of that side of his head. And i think that the entire gracie family will be going home with a new thought in their minds, " they are NOT the ultimate style". I never liked the gracies for the whole reason of their arrogance, they are all good, very good, i'll give them that, but their cockiness lead to the beating that he received last night. I would like to see a younger member of the gracie family try to fight matt, and see how that goes, i think it would be the same result. I'm very glad the fight happened the way it did, I hope that it opens the eyes of many people who believed that gracie jui jitsu was unbeatable. I hope people understand now that no one style is perfect, their is no best style, and no person is unbeatable.....sorry for my rant i could go on forever from multiple angles on this but i'll leave that for later.

IFL- Anyone see it?

i like the way they did the ring, where it inclines the further you go out, i'd like to see how that plays as a factor in the future -
i think it might have "popped" or hyperextended, but i dont think it broke either.

and what a beautiful fight it was. Complete dominance by matt hughes. Gracie did show how tough he was, he had a poker face the whole time he was in the arm bar. I also noticed that even though he was being placed in the arm bar he was working on trying to get in the full guard while only in the half guard at the time....apparently the pain was not an issue, great show of will power on his part. Hats off to matt hughes, that was very impressive, a fight he will not quickly forget, nor will any competitors and martial artists around the world for quite some time.

best techniques to end a fight
granmasterchen replied to Ryan gry's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
avoid the situation, if you see an are that looks like it might be a potential trouble area, walk around, avoid it, dont go pushing through the crowd just to show off to everyone how tough you and prove that you are the alpha male.....that is how fights and altercations usually start because of someone offending another person in someway....so the best way is to avoid a possible situation. -
in about 20 yrs or so i'll finish my book on martial arts and you can use that to study from....but in the meantime i don't know of any off the top of my head. I would recommend searching around the net for arnis or a similar style and maybe you'll get lucky on finding some teaching methods and techniques....or you can wait 20 yrs, lol

Effective Against Multiple Attackers?
granmasterchen replied to keith_aquino's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
dont stay in the same place, constantly move and attack. Also, when fighting multiple opponents you need to break out those techniques that are really nasty that can end a fight really quick. -
Chuck Norris's World Combat League (WCL)

looked pretty good to me, i would continue to watch it, it reminds me of the older full contact sparring matches back in the 70s -
thanks, i often get scolden for rambling on and on about martial arts. lol

kyokushin karate is pretty popular, you should be able to find info with a regular google/yahoo search if you are looking for schools.

there is much to my belief in the martial arts but i will break it down and keep this very very short today. First just look at the words, martial is the physical aspect, the ability to fight and defend yourself and then there is the word art. Art in my mind is where most of the so called martial artists do not recognize. In my mind when i see "art" i look at it as if it was an art. Meaning like in paining, music or whatever, that there is something that we can all learn from it, that continued training will lead us to higher levels of understanding where we can transcend our normal simplistic views of life/society/and culture and remold ourselves as we did physically. I see the martial arts as a philosophy, a way of life, a way to better the world once we come to understand how we can accomplish that means. It is not something solely for competitition, or self defense or to learn weapons or to get fit, it is much more, it is an art. We need to learn to improve ourselves mentally along with physically......and as you see.....i've already made this longer than i had hoped for, sorry.

well i started out in the old school version of tkd with groin contact, sweeps, takedowns, grappling and head contact, and it wasn't just light contact either, lol. But as you've mentioned the majority of tkd has evolved into the olympic sport. The tkd that i studied has been reknown as tangsoodo or even shotokan karate. While over in japan i had a great time studying with many of the kyokushan karate schools. From what we saw and did there it was basically like a K1 fighting match, which is a very big focus over in japan now. So it's not point sparring, they go for the KO. They train more brute power and stamina with their techniques than they used to in the past. Many of the karate schools in japan are also giving up on teaching kata and many other aspects of the martial art and solely focusing on competition in events like pride and K1.
