I'm not sure where to put this so I thought I'd try it out here. I apologize if this is the wrong Forum. I've been a member of my dojo for 6 years now and I'm a 1st Kyu Brown Belt in the style of Goju Ryu. I've noticed since I've been back from a 4 year break (because of knee injuries) that my dojo has drastically changed. When my Senseis would teach it would be interesting and it wouldn't be as "monotone". I mean classes would vary each day, they would range from sparring to kata and everything in between. Now, every class is 45 minutes of warmups, 45 minutes of Basics such as Jodan-Chudan-Gedan Punches and then 30 minutes for what they feel like doing. We rarely spar anymore, the most we do is two step sparring which can get long after a while. On top of that, last year they decided they wanted to test me for 1st Dan sometime in the next 5 months. I'm excited for that but at the same time I don't feel as if though I don't deserve the belt because I don't think I know as much as I should because of the "monotone" classes. I'm just not sure what to make of the whole situation. It's kind of getting frustrating.. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I would appreciate any kind of advice. Solo

The longest I've ever tried to hold it is 12 and a half minutes...Talk about switching into earthquake mode once you pass the 5 minute mark lol

I have to agree. White belts are important either way. Our Sensei teaches us it is respectful to wear our white belts when you decide to train in another style even though you may be a 1st Dan or whatnot. It shows respect to the Sensei, meaning you are willing and eager to learn and to show that their style is absolutley worth wearing a white belt again for. Secondly, I think the students of that style will also enjoy this. It shows them that even though you may have higher knowledge in another style but are wearing a white belt in their classe shows that you don't know everything and you accept that you are one of them - a lower ranking student in their style. You respect their style and respect that you know less than they do but are willing to learn. Make sense to anyone? lol it just to say that "I accept to learn with the class and start from the bottom as to where everyone should.." IMO...

What is The Most Common Misconception about your style?
Solo replied to TJS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Uhm...From what I've seen, esp. from programs on tv such as "Top Ten Martial Arts" which aired on TLC described Goju Ryu as a style in which you practically beat yourself to a pulp to strengthen your body and that's mostly what Goju dojos focus on. On the contrary, we strenghten our bodies but not by killing ourselves doing a certain exercise and strengthening isn't the only thing we do in class x.x..Anyone else get this feeling sometimes? *shrugs* -
$1,243,318.00 I wonder how my parents afforded me

Actually..In my opinion, Aaliyah had a huge life. She did more in her 22 years on this earth than some may do in a lifetime...It's going on a 2 year anniversary and still people remember her. That's how you know she's had an impact on our lives/society/humanity in general. <3 Aaliyah <3

Karate Kid marathon!!!
Solo replied to ShotokanKen's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
The Karate Kid movies used to be my favorite when I was a kid lol I still watch them from time to time, they bring back lotsa memories -
Ah, you're lucky TheDevilAside, my Senseis have never trained with the nunchaku so the only way I can learn is from stuff I get online and from stuff I see in movies..stuff that I think I can handle practicing without ending up in the hospital of course =P And I agree with you DokterVet, it is weird you can get a gun easily but you can't carry two sticks a chain around you...even though you can make damage..hey, what would you rather see, someone with a gun or a nunchaku??

They're illegal here in Canada aswell, I mean you're not allowed to own a "hardwood" set, they have to be foam. And yes, I only have foam ones (...heh) lol I find they tend to bend went they should stay sraight, err it gets annoying when you try to execute a move but the darn chucks just flip flop everywhere lol But you're right, they don't hurt when you smack yourself in the face.. =P
-
You always carry them with you? Is that a set or a just a pair? I've just started training with them yet have been bruised so many times I lost count lol They're brutal lol but totally worth it!

I've trained on the Kata Way Of the Wolverine, it is a Kata but not an "original" Goju.. As gheinisch posted above Bob Dalgleish created it and taught to many of the Senseis up here in the North. I've looked for videos myself but nothing has come up. If I find anything online I'll let you know. =P

I study Sanchin aswell. They begin teaching it when the student reaches 3rd Kyu (Brown)..and honestly, I don't see it as being unhealthy
