Throws?
Shorin Ryuu replied to yojimbo's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
We work throws or take downs into sparring. We also do them separately if we are focusing on a particular technique. I must say that we emphasize grappling (tuite) more than just throwing them. By this i mean controlling the opponent, either by joint locks, pressure points, taking them down to the ground, etc., you get the picture. -
TKD vs Karate
Shorin Ryuu replied to TKD_McGee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Technically, Ryukyu Kempo would be Okinawan, as they are the Ryukyu islands. But then again, Okinawa = karate. Good points though. -
Simply catching a leg from a high kick doesn't require you to watch a movie. We've all done it since third grade or so... As far as style goes, you aren't terribly specific, so i have no idea

Hoorah for Google.com! Ooh, let's go Steve walks warily down the street With the brim pulled way down low Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet Machine guns ready to go Are you ready, hey, are you ready for this Are you hangin' on the edge of your seat Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat - yeah Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone and another one gone Another one bites the dust, eh Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust How do you think I'm going to get along Without you when you're gone You took me for everything that I had And kicked me out on my own Are you happy ? Are you satisfied ? How long can you stand the heat Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat Look out Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone and another one gone Another one bites the dust, eh Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust Hey Oh take it Bites the dust - bite the dust hey Hey Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust, ow Another one bites the dust, hey hey Another one bites the dust, heeey Ooh show down There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man And bring him to the ground You can beat him You can cheat him You can treat him bad and leave him When he's down, yeah But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you I'm standing on my own two feet Out of the doorway the bullets rip Repeating to the sound of the beat Oh yeah Another one bites the dust Another one bites the dust And another one gone and another one gone Another one bites the dust, yeah Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust Shoot out Hey, alright

Hehe, don't let a Korean national hear you say that, they'll go berserk! I'm actualy half-Korean myself, but I'm 100% American for all I care. I roomed with a full blood korean for a year last year, and we would joke about stuff like that, but man, some of them can get pretty agitated.

Well, sometimes I do listen to music while studying, but when I'm doing karate, I tend to focus on just that. Especially when doing kata, because I'm keeping the bunkai in mind, visualization, and all that. But when I am doing something like using an exercise bike or just flat out working out, I do listen to music sometimes. Usually something upbeat and fast. Hehe, you can find a lot of that in anime music as well.

True, they were formally annexed in the early 1900s, although Japan had dominated since they ousted the Chinese in the late 1800s. However, despite Japanese attempts to totally Japanize the Koreans (one sad story is when a Korean runner won the marathon in the Olympics and they gave his Japanese name and lowered the Japanese flag and played the Japanese anthem), let alone forced name changes, martial law, etc., the Koreans remained for the most part, Korean and resented anything Japanese. They definately did not consider themselves Japanese.

Irritating though it may be, that's a very good point. Still, that doesn't make it any better. Even if written in a genuinely impartial and factual manner the American's would look good, as you were. I'm not trying to take away from what you did. But at least then it wouldn't look quite so much like you need to indoctrinate your youth in blind patriotism. For a country obsessed with free-will etc etc that seems awfully coersive. Sorry for the double post, didn't see this one there. As with any country, of course the young children are taught only that America is good. (Look at the Japanese education system. You would swear that the Americans attacked them for no reason at all if you believed everything in there) Fortunately, in higher education (i'm referring to high school (at least mine) and in college), these fallacies are usually dispelled. Children as such are often shielded from the truth all the time. Look at Santa Claus or dog heaven. This is just another example, albeit on a larger scale.

Rwanda: Most of the world was responsible for that one. Instead of calling it genocide, the UN conveniently labeled it "civil unrest" because if they called it genocide, they would have had to do something. Nevermind the fact that the death count was in the hundreds of thousands.

The Bataan Death March was a strange thing. Most of the atrocities committed were actually done by Koreans serving in the Japanese Army...history is funny like that...and by funny I do mean messed up... I really like to use ellipses... ... ...

SIGH, yes, I've heard the soundtrack to the RUROUNI KENSHIN OAV's....stupid company changing name to Samurai X...oh well...yeah, I liked the way they worked the music in for that one. I for one am a big fan of Kanno Youko, arguably one of the most versatile in terms of multi-genre music composers out there and she sounds great! Think Escaflowne, Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, inumerable others... Heh, that's my rant...

Well, at least we don't have people saying "You know, those two boys of Saddam weren't that bad...," or "Shoot, I was going to get their autograph," or "Dangit! I was going to have them entertain at my five-year-old's birthday party..."

I don't like playing online games too much because there is always that skill hump you have to spend time to tackle, and I'd much rather be working out or something else... That being said, I'm still a sucker for rpgs, just not online ones...

Hmmm, I don't listen to music while training... I'm also sort of a geek, so I listen to a lot of anime soundtracks or game soundtracks. I also like classical and JAZZ and BLUES a lot, maybe throw in some alternative music (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, I know, they are really different from eachother, but I lumped them together anyway, hah!) or others (Sublime).

I don't know about this case, but usually scholars don't stick to reading standard school curriculum textbooks. Especially in college level, they tend to branch out more...
-
Hmmm....this is a really twisted quality vs. quantity debate...

some start a good conversation plz...so bored

Hmm...I remember 3-d calculus...that was baaaaaaaaad..... -
predetermined kumite is usually just a training aid. Just think of it as multi-step drills. Realistically, they are usually simple two-person kata.

Oh, just a note on the stances, Okinawan stances (Shorin Ryu at least) tend to be rather high and most techniques follow natural movements.

Throws?
Shorin Ryuu replied to yojimbo's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I almost always combine throws with a joint lock or pressure point hold of sorts. It makes it that much more likely to work. -
Don't make yourself a target, which is what I think some of the people here are already saying. Stand upright and exude confidence. They are less likely to pick on those kind of people.

If that is true, I wish they were brought to justice for what they did instead of them getting off easy and just dying. Not that I mean they get some cruel and unusual punishment, but have some sort of trial or official public recognition of their crimes. Especially the older one, he was REAL messed up (relatively speaking, of course, they were both messed up). EDIT: Of course, from an expediency point of view, it does make things much easier...

I think it is always common courtesy to show up with a white belt, but ask the instructor. This way, you at least show a willingness to compromise. If you are asked to start over as a white belt (I have had this happen to me before), make sure you don't end up like that arrogant person karatekaaikidoist has to deal with in another post. As far as whether or not is fair in a tournament...tournaments are just games anyway, so I would go with what the instructor asks you to do rather than worry about some other guy.

That's disappointing...especially for an Okinawan karate dojo. Good luck in finding a good place to train.
