  1. When I started I had no idea that there was a difference between styles. As far as I knew there was Karate (where you get fit and hit people) and Judo (where you don't). I started in a style called Goshin-Ryu which, looking back, was very Tae Kwon Do-ish.
  2. That's a good point, SeverStar. I hadn't thought of that. You mean you expect me to do my own research? Sheesh. Honestly though, I thought this place would be a good resource for finding stuff out.
  3. The first guy has a tight grip on my neck with one hand or two? This makes all the difference. If I don't know what his other hand is doing I assume that he has a knife, or at least that it's a good possiblility. If that's the case I'd be pretty compliant, unless I thought they were going to hurt me no matter what. If I had to fight, I'd probably reel off these thechniques until they started working: finger lock (or keys into the back of his hand), groin strike, ankle strike, throw. I know I'm being a bit vague, but there you go. If I couldn't run past the second guy once I got loose, I guess I'd try to whack his eyes, throat, and groin and then run.
  4. So in other words, we have a guy coming from the left and another from the front. Might as well put it in order of proximate threat. With only this info to go on, the possibilities are almost endless. But how am I cornered? If they are the distance you say they are, then there is still a slight gap. As the first guy closes I reach out with one hand and throw him into the other guy, then I straighten out my cape and go home.
  5. Sorry for the link lack. When I posted this question I wasn't sure if we were permitted to post links to other sites. The site is simply their home page: http://www.attackproof.com I found it after reading a review of their book on Amazon. I didn't think it a big deal not to post a link, because if anyone knew about it then they wouldn't need a link.
  6. Started at 29 and now I'm 14. Or was that the other way around...?
  7. Thanks SaiFightsMS!
  8. The Endless Summer is my favourite "sporting" movie. Rumble in the Bronx is my favourite MA movie at the moment.
  9. Not easily. I don't think you can actually strengthen the bone through training, and the bone is so close to the skin on your shins. Your best bet would be to do exercises that build the muscle there; lifting a barbell using your toes, for instance.
  10. Thanks. And your assumption may well be right, but once I start to discuss a topic I can tend to get onto tangental areas.
  11. Ok, I knew I was asking for trouble by stating what I did without any explanation. Heh. First let me say that I know all about school bullies and fights at school. I grew up in some pretty rough schools and was harrassed more than a few times. I've been thrown from a moving train by three big guys, and so on. When it comes down to it, these fights are not about anything except domination and humiliation. Pain is one way that they dominate you. You probably know all this already, but I am letting you know where I'm coming from. If you get bullied enough you will do almost anything to make it stop. And that is what I was referring to in my comment about honour. Things are just not so black and white outside of the dojo. People who give you no respect (and I mean as a human being) need to be shown the error of their ways, and if that means being a good example until they see the light or whether it means asking someone who is bigger than you to pound them, then that's your call. Hmmm. I know that I still haven't explained myself adequately, so I'll think on this some more and see what else I can come up with (I'm home sick, so today is not my best day for expressing myself clearly).
  12. Bruce Lee was afraid to fight Ali. He put his fist up in comparison to the size of Ali's and said "Look at my little Chinese fist!". I kinda think that he'd have known what he was talking about. To me, it's a very obvious question. If the skill level is identical, then it must come down to physical prowess; i.e., strength, endurance, and speed. I mean, duh!
  13. Maybe I'm too tired, but I have no idea what you're trying to say, dude.
  14. Honour is over-rated sometimes; it's wherever you find it. And bullies deserve everything they get.
  15. Does anyone know anything about this method of self defense? I came across the home site and it looked very aggressive, but effective. Or at least, the fact that it's supposed to be effective is their selling-point.
  16. Rice won't make you gain weight. It's the staple of many Asian diets, and non-westernised Asians are generally pretty thin. See my above post on the main things to cut out. And, yeah, if you eat a lot of junk food, that's a no-brainer: cut out the chips and take-aways. (Although chips every now and again won't really hurt ya.)
  17. Actually, I don't mind the snow, it's still a novelty. It's the cold that gets to me. Thanks for the welcomes guys!
  18. I can't recommend any in particular, but if you do a search at Amazon you'll probably find something.
  19. I was pretty good with a foil, way back when. I think I still have the gear somewhere.
  20. I love using Bo, sword, and sai, but the staff always feels the most natural for me. The sword is fun, though it kinda depends what I'm doing with it.
  21. I think it's not so much a joke as a riddle. The guy in the middle of the road fell down.
  22. Thanks for the info, there are some good points in there.
