  1. If you can plainly see whats going on and what he is about to throw at you, or tries a common street grab, then you can unleash whatever you need to stop the threat, but if it leads to a full hands on brawl, it will probably be wild scrambling and most of your training has gone out the window. i dont count on this aggressor to throw a pretty karate style punch that will land on its intended target, what he will throw will be so sloppy that his punch to the nose will probably hit your throat. And he probably has a buddy coming up behind you. I think its good to practice at least your punching in funny positions, such as getting your bob bag in a head lock and punching his head, or hitting a heavy bag while its on the ground, etc. At least you will probably be better at punching in general from any position than a normal person. There is no telling how you will actually be standing or sitting when you get attacked. I think you be able to counter instinctively at least starting out, but dont count on being able to square off in your fighting stance like in the movies.
  2. He probably shifted all his weight into the punch and drove it on in once the glove made contact. I predict this guy (kid) ran out of sparring partners pretty quick by trying to knock them down during sparring.
  3. I love the wavemaster xxl or the bob bag that has the boxing trunks. Those bags fill up with water and are pretty heavy once filled, I feel i got a stronger punch by putting my hands on the bag and pushing it back like i was shoving it, it makes for the perfect resistance. Actually, you need to learn to have a good shove because you may can end a fight right there with a shove when they see how hard it is. One other thing I got from ringside.com is resistance straps. Get the heavy duty one that has a handle on both ends, its great for doing punches and will put a little muscle on top of your shoulders. You just hold a handle in each hand, and have to strap going around your back. its great, and cheap.,, pushups are cheap too. I like weighted gloves also.,, speaking of gloves, use them when you punch your bag, protect your hands!!! I just noticed that you said you were on a second floor. Is this an apartment where you have someone living under you? They may not like the noise of you going at it on a bag and report you. Maybe you can get them to come up and train with you.
  4. I tore up my elbow trying to lift a 24 pack of pepsi out of a shopping cart recently, that was march, and its just now starting to feel ok. One thing i noticed was that it hurt until i started taking a shot of pro T gold protein, as well as a few protein bars. I guess all the junk food i eat don't have enough protein to heal my body, even though I take vitamins. Aleve works pretty well on joint pain too. If you can, go see a roadside clinic and get a steroid shot, its hard to heal if it's inflamed.
  5. I"m about in the same boat you are. We have some schools but most are not worth going to for one reason or another. You will ALWAYS miss karate once it's in your blood!!! You can do a lot of training on your own, just get you a heavy bag like the wavemaster xxl, or the bob with the boxing trunks so that you can do low kicks on it. Both are free standing, maybe even get both!!! Practice what you you know, come up with your own combinations on the bag. I like to watch instructions while sitting in the floor stretching my legs. Yes it will be hard to learn new stuff like that but if it's all you got, its all you got. practice in the mirror, go up and down your carport throwing kicks, blocks, punches, footwork/pivots. kinda like training for boxing on your on. If you have been around for a while and feel confident in your fundamentals, can you find a neighborhood kid to teach what you know so far? There may be people around just like you who would like to get together in a carport to train, just be careful who all you let come over and make sure you have a good liability home policy in case someone gets hurt. It may be that you can travel out of town once or twice a month for a private lesson? If you dont have a partner, you will get rusty on sparring and timing a punch coming at you. I have a small small class I go to, but I am also watching the danny lane champion karate dvds and doing it along with him on off days, he seems to be able to teach little details well.
  6. I remember a boy back in high school that was gonna show us how high he could kick, but his jeans were tight in the crotch area and so when he kicked, his jeans pulled his other out from under him and he busted it big time. It is a good idea to try out kicking in street clothes to see how it goes. I remember trying to kick with my shoes on for the first time and I felt off balance.
  7. Thanks, I'm glad to be here. I agree, just because someone didnt graduate from art school dont mean they cant draw. I taught myself algebra one summer after failing it four times in college, went back in and made 100's back to back. He may have a black belt in something, I just never heard what. There is a tkd school here, when i get up the money I may can train there also. This school is free for now because it's just a few guys in the back of a weight lifting gym. I've had two years of bjj, and couple of years of various karate/boxing depending on what city I'm in. Anyway, glad to be here... one other thing, someone pointed out to me that bruce lee didnt have a black belt in anything in particular, he just got good at wing chun, then looked at and borrowed stuff off other arts, trained very very hard, then called his combinations of knowledge jeet kune do.... you guys heard that? I dont know if anyone "invents" a new style, I think they just get a brown or black belt in two different styles, then hang a sign on a door calling it a new name, but its just his two styles taught in one class.
  8. Sometimes I come across schools started by someone teaching their own style or a recently created style. I've been around the block (in my opinion) enough to know if the stuff being taught is useful and correct, which this one seems to be that I enjoy going to now. It's basically a backyard version of kyokushin or shotokan in my opinion. I suppose the instructor got trained in some style for a while before starting his own, but i've never seen a guest from the old class or heard of the style outside my town. But i like the instruction and fellowship at this place. Is it possible to train in a style that's not nationally recognized and may be taught by someone who didn't actually get a black belt but was very good, and still feel proud to be there? Thanks guys,,,
