  1. Plyometrics training is perhaps the most effective way to develop fast twitch muscle. Another, less traditional way to develop faster hands, wear 5lb wrist weights for a few days. You'll speed up.
  2. In actual competition, I have never seen nor heard of a 16 oz glove being used. Training with gloves of that weight is pretty much universal. Hurly bird is correct in that gloves are there to protect your hands, not your opponents face. Most styles of martial arts would suffer from the use of boxing gloves, but with boxing and most kickboxing organizations, there is no holding or pressure point manipulation.
  3. You talk a lot of smack with little intellect to back it up. As for my ignorance getting worse every day, that stems directly from dealing with children like you. If you can't manage to make your point in any way other than juvenile attempts to sling insults, then apparently Mine is not the only boundless ignorance. Prove to me that UFC is not scripted. To rebut your Belief that I clearly know nothing about mixed martial arts, UFC is not a very good measuring stick for the sport. I have no doubt that there are a number of legitimate MMA competitions out there. However, UFC is NOT one of them. Do some research. Check into some of the things that went on around the time of the cable ban.
  4. I see a lot of "I can beat...." from both sides on this issue. However, I think that any kickboxer who hasn't trained for a while in straight boxing is selling themselves short. Unfortunately, not many kickboxers do train this way. Rather than dwelling on which sport (art) is better, we as kickboxers need to respect the skills that can be obtained from a boxing background. And that's all The Ryno has to say about that.
  5. You've got me. I clearly don't. Frankly I don't care to. I prefer to stick to legitimate martial ARTS, not spend my time immersed in the latest men's soap opera. Learn a little more about your topic before you go getting in a "my daddy can beat up your daddy" pissing contest. Find out who owns the UFC. I got involved in this topic not to bash your favorite TV show, but to speak up for a great fighter that you clearly have no knowledge of, or respect for.
  6. Hips and shoulders should rotate in that order. However, there is more involved than just hips and shoulders.
  7. Bruce Lee's application of such techniques as the one and three inch punches were in fact demonstrations. As was stated before (forgive me for not giving credit, I'm using the quick reply) Lee's background was in wing chun. MOST punches in WC are from the elbow. The 1in puch was developed as an evolution of fajing and western boxing. The idea being that you would pivot on the balls if your feet, then bring your hips around, then bring your shoulders. the twisting from the ground up would put the momentum of your body behind a punch and developing more force and efficiency than using your arms alone. it also has the benefit of eliminating the chance that you will telegraph. Bruce explained it in terms of a tree. Trees grow from the roots, up the trunk, through the branches, and out to the leaves. By beginning a punch at the roots (feet) you can develop tremendous power in remarkably short distance. It isn't really that practical to throw punches from a few inches, not because the technique is ineffective, but because more often we have more room, and more distance to generate power. The principle behind the idea though can be demonstrated by examining a simple boxing combo. For example, Fighter A throws a jab at Fighter B. Fighter B slips the jab and counters with an overhand right, pivoting his body to the left and shifting his weight slightly forward. This sets up the fighter to pivot back to the right _explosively_, then driving his hips, and finally bringing his shoulders around to deliver a crushing right hook to the body. Done properly, that hook travels a total of 6-10 inches, depending on the fighter.
  8. A slugger is a less technical, more brute strength fighter. Also Plodder. Example: Butterbean. Boxer(puncher too?) Would be a more technical fighter relying more on skill. Example: Bernard Hopkins, Lennox Lewis, and Ali. I don't recall who called Marciano a swarmer, but it does describe his ability to be all over his opponent. hope that helps.
  9. My mistake, perhaps I should devote more time to WWF and less time to legitimate martial arts so I don't forget which Shamrock is which. My apologies. My point remains however, Cung Le's performance in UFC depends on what's in the script.
  10. LOL that is a load of crap..what Gracie has beaten frank? what BJJ practicioner has beaten frank? Royce (Hoyce? all the Gracie's have odd names.) The first time Frank fought him. Don't get me wrong, Frank is a good fighter, but he's not invincible.
  11. You've had luck with Neverlast?
  12. If you're differentiating "forms" and Kata, there are no martial arts that have no forms, every martial art has proper ways to move the body to set up and execute strikes, throws, etc.. To illustrate this, show me one technique that has no name.
  13. For those of you who don't know, Sanshou is a form of Chinese "Shootfighting". Kung fu style kicking and punching coupled with some groundfighting. As for how Cung would do in UFC, that all depends on what's in the script. Just a new form of WWF. As for hanging with Frank on the ground, the entire Gracie family, easily a few THOUSAND BBJ practitioners, and Frank's own brother Ken. Ken wipes mats with Frank fairly often. Don't confuse Frank Shamrock being the biggest "name" in MMA with being the biggest talent. And don't confuse "wrestling" with MA.
  14. After using Ringside gear for years, I switched to Century hoping to find headgear that was a bit more comfortable. What brands have you guys used and what would you buy if you had to replace everything?
  15. I tend to go for the rough, broken-in, hardcore, yet sanitary look. I want to know that my money is going toward my training, rather than brand new floor to ceiling mirrors and Tae-Bo "heavy" bags.
  16. Reasons will differ from person to person, as will tat's. I can explain mine though. The family of elephants around my bicep is symbolic of my family, and how I should never let them drift. The Bull Elephant on my chest is to remind me to be strong, proud, and tackle challenges head on. The dolphin between my shoulderblades is a design that was inspired by surfing with a pod of dolphins in Mexico, and a reminder not to let my fears get the best of me. ( when they were swimming around, all I could see was the dorsal fins. I thought they were sharks at first.)
  17. I"m so glad I'm not the only one who's done that
  18. email me with age, weight, height, and a general idea of your fitness level;, and I'll put a program together for you.
  19. plyometrics
  20. Time to clear the misinformation. Creatine DOES NOT cause kidney disease. The waste products that your body produces as it processes your natural supply of creatine will be elevated due to creatine supplementation. To a doctor who is inexperienced in athletic medicine, this can APPEAR to be kidney disease. The load phase for creatine monohydrate IS necessary UNLESS you also use an insulin potentiator (mimics insulin) such as alpha lipoic acid or vanadyl sulphate. Cell-Tech is in all actuality a very good product. The marketing campaign that Muscle-Tech uses is the reason for the high prices. If you don't use an IP with your creatine, take it with a simple sugar as creatine is insulin driven. I could give you all the info on exactly how this all works, but it's a bit long winded. If anyone needs an explanation of exact dosage schedules and cycles, I'd be happy to help, just email me and I'll go over it with you. In fact, I'll be starting a thread to this effect. Creatine is safe, long term studies HAVE been done (columbia university). And you don't get acne. You will, however, retain water. Drink more.
  21. I listen to goa trance when I'm training, otherwise I'll listen to just about anything. You can't beat Goa for training music though.
  22. I have three, one on my chest of an elephant's head, an armband of elephants walking trunk to tail, and a dolphin between my shoulder blades. No color though. The only one that hurt was my chest.
  23. If You're looking for strength in your chest, there are a number of things I reccomend. 1. Bench press, flat and incline. When raising the weight, explode to just below full extension, on the negative (down) portion, you should take twice as long to bring the weight back to just above your chest. NO BOUNCING. 2. The biggest problem 99.999% of people have with compound chest excercises is the triceps. The two best movements for tri's are kickbacks and rope pulldowns. For kickbacks, bend over a bench with one hand supporting your body. pin the other elbow to your side and bend your arm 90 degrees. Extend your arm to the rear until almost straight and SQUEEZE!! at the top. Pull downs will get you funny looks at the gym. Start with a weight you can do 15 reps with. Do 10 reps, then decrease the weight by 1 plate and immediately bang out 10 more reps. continue this process until you're doing the lowest weight on the machine. When you're struggling to get that last few reps out of the set, ppl are going to be staring. Good luck.
  24. Sponge, your best bet is Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Collagen. Glucosamine will help build connective tissue, Chondtroitin blocks the enzymes that break down connective tissue over time, and collagen will give you something to build connective tisue from. Try joint support from Nature's Best, or JSF from champion nutrition. There are also a few liquid GCC supplements available, but they taste foul. Bear in mind, It normally takes 3-4 weeks for your body to respond to the suplement.
