Get your instructor to go through the technique with you as they should be able to help you. If they cant then its a cr@p kick and dont do it or find a different way completely. MArts moves should not require so much practice to be done either its a bad move or you are getting it wrong. Ask your instructor.

Shootfighting vs other arts
Ghost replied to Anzie's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Hey Strayder why dont you get yourself down to a shootfighting club and joinin and then maybe you change your mind. thats the best way ican prove my point that shootfighting does work. Th best preparation you can have for a fight is full contact sparring with as few rules as possible. Now let me see.......which systems so that...........ummmmmmmmm.....oh yes i think i know! -
Starting Boxing

You should be polite or they will think you are an idiot but train hard and dont whimp out. For instance if you are doing circuit training and you cant do the press ups dont collapse on the floor and say you cant do it just do what you can and try and do a few more. When you are standing up and are tired dont bend over and put your hands on your knees, stand up straight (not to attention though) just stay up right and you will be ok. Get the picture. Above all be yourself ask questions if you want, just be you. -

Its normal dont worry. "Try or try not, do or do not" - Master Yoda(Star Wars) -
Sorry guys but the age discussion is dumb. A younger guy at his peak will be better but older people can still fight, just not as well as the younger ones. Put it like this, if you ask the old guys they will most likely say they are good but not as good as they were when they were younger. You have to go over that hill at some point and there is no point pretending that it doesnt happen to everyone. Still think boxing is being underestimated out there just from the posts on this topic. Im dissapointed i must say but i guess htats just how boxing is seen. Im sure you will all learn one day, the hard way.

Thanks for that reply Karate_woman its nice to see some more open minds for change. It will be nice when all the arts can be talked about at the same level but until then its going to be a lot of arguments i guess. I think its worth asking your instructor if he/she used to box as he can give you some good stuff most likely. I did Karate for two years but now do Mauy Thai and i dont regret any of it! Boxing can add some nice fast hand work to karate but i guess that will ultimately make you a kickboxer if you follow that route. Still, worth having a look at what boxing is all about so you can broaden your horizons. Godd luck and dont forget to ask him/her.

Sounds like chinese wispers. Maybe the differences are coming out as differeant instructors interperate things differntly. I have never been big on kata.. I guess a kata should not change though. They should always be the same. If your not sure which one too follow its difficult cos you dont know who is right Depends if you care if its right or not. If you cant apply it to real life and cant work out if it is right or not from what you already know it kind of begs the question "why do it at all?"

To Neil002 and TJS: thanks guys Im not trying to put boxing above others but give it the recognition it deserves in this forum. Unfortunately as i said before i feel that now it has been moved i will only get the agreements and as i thought i can guess the people that will agree and those people are doing so. If anyone can move this back to the general martial arts section i would be grateful as i belive this discussion needs to be had.

Personally i think this is a difficult one to answer as the original system must have worked in its time. However if the system is to remain "alive" it must change and will no longer be the same as the original. I think its good to move on but not forget. the hard work of those who have gone before us. As for different people showing you different things you should make your own judgement There is no reason to reject anything that someone shows you if you can get it to work for you. Indeed if you can get all the varieties of the same techniwque to work for you then all the better for you as you will be more capable than others. Be careful though and be picky. You dont have to believe anything an instructor tells you will work if you can never make it work for you. That doesnt mean you shouldnt learn it , you should as it will work for others especially if you want to teach one day. Nothing wrong with tradition but its not good unless coupled with progression. In essence "use your common sence".

I would like to add that i regret that this topic had been moved into this section as it was originally in the General Martial arts section. I posted it there because boxing was getting dragged through the mud in that forum and i guess now its in this one i wont be getting the message across to the relevant people as most people in this forum will know what im on about.

Nice one though i think you make a good point that fighting is not always all out and is sometimes subtle. Its difficult when people stop at the edge and then just keep nudging that point. In your case however you were well within your rights to break his nose if you felt like it as he was assualting you. I dont ditinguish any difference between that type of attack and a more violent one.

East vs West
Ghost replied to Ghost's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Kung fu Luvva I would classify Wing CHun under the western section because of exactly what you say and all other Kung Fu style(at least the ones i know so i may be wrong) as eastern. -
Sorry Neil but you are wrong again. You messing around with your mates proves nothing. With any MA the stuff should be drilled into you so it is automatic. To suggest that a boxer will only box in a street fight is equally ridiculous. If you can figure out a kick to the groin what makes you think they cant? In fact head butting is taught in boxing. There are a whole set of techniques called proffesional fouls which include arm breaks and head butts and some below the belt punches. Think again.

Try using chop sticks as if they were a knife and fork. If you can do that then chopsticks win
-
Thanks for that Delta1 but i think you are wrong about the lack of effectiveness close in and to assume the uppercuts and hooks are basic is incorrect. There are a different set of punches for close in and there are bosy checks in boxing like you have in a weapons system. I would say that boxing is better now than it was when it was bare knuckle. Nothing to do with gloves just that it has evolved over time. The method of guarding and punching has not been changed to accomodate the weight of gloves. Bare knuckle boxing is still big in Britain and standard boxing is used and still works in its current format.

Karate_Woman Sorry to hear that, that sounds nasty. I think you did exactly the right thing and you should be proud of yourself. Idiots like that need to be put in their place. I think its awful no one helped you. I know i would have helped if i had been there and i dont think any one should be messed with like that.
