Is it possible to use controlled/pulled or light contact when using elbow and knee techniques when sparring? Point fighting and full on fighting are two very different animals as one is a game of tag and the other is a proven way at causing and avoiding pain; which one is authentic and which one is fake?

Yet Another McDojo Question

Thanks for the update JR 137, there had to be some reason for what they were doing, but for the life of me, couldn't quite figure this one out. -
Wooden Dummies for other Martial arts
Alan Armstrong replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in Equipment and Gear
On the other hand: As the mook jong is a Wing Chun training device, and Wing Chun is a Yin/Yang style then this is an important aspect to remember when using it. Two fold simultaneously toughening forarms and also developing sensitivity in them. The mook jong (wooden man) is a Yin/Yang multi tasking teaching device and training partner that is always in class before you and never quits or tires out or gets saggy or lazy, doesn't talk back and has no ego. For a variety on reasons from every other discipline other than Wing Chun, it seems to be lacking the human element of aliveness as it doesn't hit back, but the same can be said for a punching bag or speed bag and a makiwara board. The WCD shouldn't replace a living sparing partner just as dancing with a wooden mop isn't advisable at a discotheque either, when practing with the real thing is available. -
The children's game "Rock Scissor Paper" is a cause and effect model, of how one can overcome or defeat the other. As two boxers throwing a jab that lands on each other is similar to both being Rocks, when the one that learns to slip/Paper will beat the incoming Rock. As this imaginary legendary boxer starts playing with his cause and effect to a higher level, by momentarily covering his opponents vision with one hand and hitting with the other hand that being a Rock Scissor or Paper; as at this point it doesn't matter. As this Legend of a boxer started to get bored and no one wanted to play his game anymore, as he became lonely, he changed the game plan and decided to give everyone a fighting chance (not really) he started pretending to aim high but hit low, would hit lightly then unleash a killer blow, would draw the opponent in then lash out, this kept the legend amused for some time, until everyone caught on to his special effects.

Cause and effect is important to martial artists, as we learn to react accordingly, as a kick will need to be dodged, blocked or misdirected or it will cause pain and the effect could be life threatening. Likewise, while an eye poke or groin kick can cause instant pain to an opponent very effectively. The fly swatter is known as good Kung Fu, for its efficiency and trying to kill flies with chop sticks, although is not good kung fu, it is however the path of most resistance (difficulty) good for training purposes. Cause and effect is at the heart of kung fu. With an opponent if he can hit me I can hit him; how often has it happened when two boxers jab at the same time, and both jabs land simultaneously. Then one boxer gets smarter and slips the opponent's jab and his lands perfectly on the other boxer's nose. Learning and development many martial art cause and effects skills, till one day you are called a legend.

Keyboard Warrior

Thanks for all your advice, hopefully I haven't turned the topic around to talk about me. But having saying that, I have found it to be a little therapeutic by sharing my misfortune with a Keyboard Warrior, with all of you; as I hadn't talked about it to anyone before, and never knew what it was called, till this thread raised the issue and awareness of it. As being here on KF I'm not selling or promoting anything, neither fighting for or against any causes, not in competitions with anyone and not trying to raise my personal status; as I don't have a chip on my shoulder or an axe to grind with anyone. I do however like sharing and receiving opinions on an international level on all aspects of martial arts, no matter the style, system or doctrine. Phew!!! That was all a bit heavyweight, hope to lighten up the conversations in the next rounds -
Seagal has nothing to do with that kick landed against Couture.... Im quite certain hes done that kick a few hundred thousand times having done karate for the past several decades. Its a standard front kick, and there was no "run" preceeding it. The same thought crossed my mind, that Lyoto wouldn't need Seagal's advice and guidance on such an easy thing as a front kick, but there it is... go figureIf anything, Seagal should be giving some grappling insights instead of kicking techniques... Or Lyoto teaching Seagal how to kick, would be more appropriate.

Finding the balance
Alan Armstrong replied to Spartacus Maximus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Something I learned to do when balancing work, kids and martial arts was "Power napping" Became so good and fast at it, started calling it "a snap" While staying balanced with making a living, family and martial arts, we do have "I Ching" to help us understand the Yins and Yangs and constant changes, something other pursuits don't have at their disposal. -
Keyboard Warrior
Alan Armstrong replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Mostly due to my bad experience with a keyboard warrior, is the reason why I don't show which styles that I have experience in, as they will use every bit of information about you to drag you down. A keyboard warrior will befriend you, so as to lower your guard, then when the time is right for them to strike with lies, innuendos, pulling in and using other people in to their warped scheme of causing pain to others. The keyboard Warrior is looking for attention at the expense of hurting anyone, including themselves, a killjoy personality, creating conflict and havoc for as many people as possible, due to their hatred for everyone, including themselves. A keyboard Warrior is a very miserable person who finds some satisfaction in making others feel as bad as, or worse than they feel. The best weapon against Keyboard Warriors, is to ignore them %100; as the silence will cause them to self destruct, in a fit of uncontrollable rage. As the Keyboard Warrior feeds on negative reactions of others, they are a type of emotional vampire, that cannot get enough emotional reactions to satisfy them, such as sympathy or punishment, it doesn't matter, as they are attention addicts. As martial artist I believe we have a fair fighting chance physically but are we just as prepared emotionally or physiologically against Keyboard Warrior attacks? -
That was a faked video that's been around for a long time, often with different titles but wing chun isn't one of them. It was initially labeled as capeiora fights mma. It's a staged video- i don't even think the crowd isnreal Wow you have a good eye TJ-Jitsu but Superman punches are very real. Of course they are, but they're hardly a wing chun innovation. They've been around about as long as kicks have in the UFC. In fact, the more committment to the roundhouse, (or attempted roundhouse) the easier and stronger the superman punch. An early 1980s Wing Chun movie (Pre 1993 UFC) "The Prodigal Son" in it landing a Superman punch.

Keyboard Warrior

That definition never ever once crossed my mind! A Keyboard Warrior, by your provided link, would be stopped very quickly here at KF!! Having said that, Is this type of Keyboard Warrior on MA forums nowadays on a normal basis?? I've had the misfortune of falling victim to a KW as described, years ago on another forum. He made my life hell; this is no exaggeration to say so. An unsuspecting person just doesn't know how sick and crazy, some people are on the internet. This site "Karateforums.com" however is regaining my trust for forums and is the only one I belong to. Apart from a Wing Chun site I signed up to and right away when had finished with giving them my details, there was an attempted hack on my e-mail address. -
In Chi Sim Weng Chun, the foundations of the art were based upon Chan (Zen) teachings at the Shaolin Temple, handed down from Daaht Mo. The essence of Chan teaches its followers to trust in their own experience and the understanding of nature rather than doctrine or history. Any fighting system based on Chan must have three key components. It must be complete, taking all factors into account. For example, it must address all ranges of combat from kicking to striking, trapping, grappling, or employment of weapons. It must be based on reality rather than theory. It must be spontaneous, existing in the “here and now” rather than past or future. In Chan, there is no ego or body, no past or future. By focusing on the moment, not being distracted by thoughts or emotions outside the immediate task at hand, by being in the “here-and-now” practitioners are free to be aware of the total situation and react accordingly... Just thought to throw this one out your way for this discussion. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Keyboard%20Warrior -
Something about Wing Chun, is that the many different masters of it draw from Weng Chun Kuen. It is similar to putting a high performance engine in to a regular car body. This will have its advantages on the streets but on the race track, against other race cars, it will not win. Weng Chun Kuen is the high performance race car and Bruce Lee was a driver, mechanic and a supercar designer. Hope this is all making some sense to you now?

Keyboard Warrior
Alan Armstrong replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think you're missing something on this one... A keyboard warrior isn't exactly a title someone seeks. A hero isn't a title someone seeks but it happens. You're going even further in the wrong direction... "Keyboard Warrior" is a pejorative. The cup is half full or half empty; I choose it to be half full, regarding a "Keyboard warrior" and sometimes not. -

Very good point of view Spartacus. -
Are you taught to snap or freeze the foot in mawashi geri?
Alan Armstrong replied to Prototype's topic in Karate
When kickng in the air snapping the kick back will prevent you from spinning, as opposed to a fully committed kick that will spin you due to the momentum. You will have a variety of kicking options to choose from in the future, try to understand why you should and shouldn't do what you are doing. A Muay Thai kick in a karate kata isn't appropriate but while in kumite it might be very effective. When in doubt always ask your sensei, things take time to sink in, always refer back to your sensei at a later time if need be. Ask three people the same question, chances are you will get three different answers, then become confused; better to ask one expert your sensei, accept the answer given and move along. -
Wing Chun Superman Punch What makes this punch a Wing Chun Superman Punch whereas other styles and systems also have access to it? As Wing Chun incorporates the Chinese Yin/Yang harmonies and contrasts, such as the multiple rapid, none commited "chain" punches and the direct, fully committed "1 inch" punch. As the punch in the video is from the "1 inch" punch variety. As this fighter is concealing his fighting system and intent, whereas his opponent is doing just the opposite by dancing and showing off his abilities. My point being, that those that really know how to use Wing Chun, never show it off, as it is supposed to be cloaked in ordinariness and never displayed as anything threatening or impressive. Wing Chun is a totally deceptive system of fighting which is contradictory to the openess of the Shaolin believe system. Authentic Wing Chun is none traditional Kung Fu, the real name of this system is "Weng Chun kuen" which is far more complex, than the commercialized versions, that most people are exposed to. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weng_chun Commercialized Wing Chun is a watered down version and of course pick it to pieces, as it is not as effective as the real thing any way.

I've heard it said that, the more junk and rubbish there is, then the more the good stuff shines and stands out.Yes there is alot of rubbish on the net and good stuff as well, it's knowing the difference that makes it all worthwhile. Better to look and not find anything than to just wonder and never know.
