  2. Yes fatigue sets in, just like a marathon (quantity and quality) and recovery time takes longer because the effort was deeper but doing it on a Friday evening whilst many are partying; having the weekend to recover is just enough time, to get back on track for Monday morning training.I'm usually a heavy hitter type so going for quantity is something of a novelty. There are other factors however of course that can help understand one's self better, such as testing one's stamina and endurance; as many bouts are lost to a lack of conditioning. Neeco Macias, World record 219 punches thrown in one bout Consequences of being hit more times per round than usual Full fight Neeco vs Jesus Pushing one's self beyond normal levels does take extraordinary focus and determination; which builds self confidence. As for muscle memory, if said techniques are sound from start to finish then practicing this way isn't an issue. As some people thrive on "new" challenges where others prefer other ways of being motivated. Personally I enjoy challenges; as is not every fight a challenge?
  3. Try this for 1, 2 or 3 hours and you will get a great workout, improving hand eye coordination, accuracy, agility and footwotk; that also improves offence and defence abilities. Averaging 1 punch a second that works out to be 3,600 punches in one hour; this may seem slow, but as this drill is not targeted or intended for increasing speed or power, yet it will over time improve these also. As for focusing on just speed try this Incorporating elbows and palm strikes is another option to consider in this punching workout. Wearing light gloves is advised, as even though hitting a soft target, for many thousands of times, it will leave its mark on your knuckles. This workout can also be performed with a ball used horizontally, that has a ribbon going through it and attached on the left and right; which makes it good for practing straight punches and upper cuts on. As this is inexpensive and can be set up easily in many places, it is most certainly going to improve your fighting skills at a low cost but most importantly, it requires your focused attention span towards becoming and making it effective. Are you up for the challenge?
  4. Sorry to hear this sensei8!!You certainly need some serious medical attention; I hope you get what you need right away without delay. All my prayers are all for you to get well.
  5. I'm hoping to do this in some future classes, for sure. I think I can limit the time it takes up by timing out rounds and rest periods, and perhaps at the end of class allotting extra time for stretching out and allowing the students to discuss their matches with each other a bit more extensively. This is a great idea, as some people when sparring lack self control and hit unnecessary hard, which I am sure there are those that if given the chance, would bring this topic up; among other things.
  6. Personal bare knuckle striking preference, as this is not a style or system more like a very simplified guide line where this works for me. "Be the predator and let the opponent be the prey" should be instinctively instilled in all your actions including thoughts. "See the opponent as a target as you are the weapon" Being a weapon and not a target A) First roll the fingers in to a fist and from there, they are tight locked and ready for striking with, where any number of strikes can be used in a firmly clenched fist position B) Set fists in the diagonal position, which is inbetween a Wing Chun vertical fist and a horizontal karate fist, all punches come from this, as it is body mechanics bending from the waist, that change the angles, nothing else. C) Arms are held comfortably between oneself and the opponent, not far out and not far in, with fist always in view, pointing at the opponent's check bones, fists always return to middle guard after striking or blocking. D) Diagonal (blade) stance, shifting bodyweight movements left to right, only using power blows with the use of the entire body, attacking the opponent's balance and structure. E) Never over reaching, constantly staying grounded and balanced, with feet firmly planted and striking square on with all knuckles, driving deep inwards, avoiding clipping the opponent if possible, as this causes knuckle injuries. F) Maintaining proper distance, keeping just enough out of range to entice the opponent to over reach or to be too close by crowding the opponent's offence and defence. G) Staying focused and not expending unnecessary energy, by utilising structure and power from the hips and ground. H) Sticking to one's own game plan in creating openings, by flanking and using strategic stepping, also not making costly mistakes and taking full advantage of theirs wherever possible. I) Every movement is either a strike or a set up for a strike, that could double up as a block or a deflection but in actuality it is a wind up for a strike. J) Striking with the weapon closest to the target (this avoids having a mental block) without hesitation, not allowing the opponent to formulate a plan, by keeping the opponent constantly on the defensive, whilst you can open up on newly created targets. K) Generating all power and balance from the hips, being careful not to lose sight of creating momentum from the shoulders, which causes lose of balance and power. Some practice drills: Donut shifting drill The leverage block Shifting footwork
  7. @Fat Cobra, the short answer; one is a consensual fight where the other is not. Martial arts has in many ways has drifted away from reality, by practicing virtual self defence scenarios and making a show out of it, with acrobatics, that looks impressive to on lookers. Having some down to earth bare knuckle fighting skillset to draw from, is giving someone a realistic fighting chance in the advent of a real life and death situation. The beauty of street fighting or bare knuckle techniques are that they are simple to learn and have been utilised (tried and tested) for centuries. Where martial arts (in the past) has tried to codify these skills; which have been ironically been discarded by the many, in which gave been made to sit in the backyard to rust away. As the student asks the Kung Fu master. "I am puzzled master, why do we need to train diligently, daily, to strengthen our mind, body and spirit, to fight with empty hands and with weapons, whereas others fight so brutally well, naturally, without suchlike practice or preparation, is not each way still fighting?" Master's reply "Yes both are fighting but we do it in style!"
  8. As we are fully aware that martial arts is used for self defence, then posing the question, is there such a thing as teachable street fighting skills? I belive there are street fighting skills that are different than mainstream self defence martial arts, that are teachable. Do you or would you teach street fighting skills openly? A few lessons on the subject of bare knuckle street fighting skills, as when in competion bouts, grabbing and kicking are not allowed; otherwise it would seem like brawling! Here are some observations and tips from the bare knuckle days of settling disputes the old school way. How to make a fist Maize (corn) punching bag practice for street fighting Street fighting rythem Bare knuckle guard Footwork for street fighting There is some confidence to be found in learning the way of the bare knuckle street fighter, as it doesn't hurt to know a thing or two about this realistic street game of sorts, for instance enhancing self defence martial arts with the way of streets and allies.
  9. This is how critiques in art classes are carried out, which are part of developing students to develop critical (not criticising) thinking skills. In this way, it is a group effort "to help each" other as opposed to being negative and hurtful. As long as everyone is in agreement that this is done in an absolute positive manner, then everyone will benefit from this type of encouragement, with helpful suggestions and explanations from all. Then it is a great idea having sparring critiques.
  10. Just as this hypnosis is entertaining for us so is the no touch for them. Real or not it is all entertainment. How about when corporate executives realise the importance of hypnosis? Gearing towards peak performance Corporate Hypnosis Master's Class I can't be hypnotised You can't hypnotise me! Hypnosis and Martial arts
  11. It is said that those that don't believe in hypnosis are the easiest ones to become hypnotised.Hypnosis can be very entertaining
  12. Hypnotising and martial arts has been around for a very long time and is likely to be around for some time to come, so may as well have some fun with it With none touch knockouts and moving people with the use of chi energy alone, if considering them for what they are, that being entertainment as a type of magic show. Then perhaps the hostility towards understanding that, this is a show, part hypnosis and part conforming it can be kept in context. The hostility I belive for adults, comes from the feeling of being deceived and lied to, yet consider children growing up without magical memories. When compliance between student and teacher ( in martial arts) reaches another level of none touch alone there has been (unintentional or not) a connection of none verbal communication between them. Similar to married couples that can finish each others sentences or know each other so well that subtle gestures (between student and teacher) are enough to communicate their thoughts and intentions just with facial expressions and hand gestures. Another example is that wanting to believe in magical things, making something more special than it is, thereby creating mysticism in a specific group. Mass hysteria and hypnotic suggestions can create stronger bonds between teacher and student reinforcing their relationship. Conforming and flinching, also overreacting to the moves of the teacher makes none touch sparring appearing real to on lookers. We can never be 100% sure that chi is real but for many that belive it exists then who are we to say that they are wrong? Hypnotism is real yet it doesn't seem possible in daily life? Skeptics watch this BEWARE Just imagine if all the military was hypnotised, there could be consequences? https://youtu.be/EFA_Ge7JWno Subliminal Seduction https://youtu.be/0xqh3-DvpJM How we are surrounded by subliminal messages to buy thing we don't need and to drive vehicles that promises freedom and prestige, making us feel more desirable or important, as this is the real use of Chi, with none touch, that move us and compels us, we accept knowing full well that we are buying in to things... ... with a free will? 14. That is right sensei8 we MAists do need to laugh at our selves... There are many elements of truth to Master Ken's theory's which should be acknowledged, as there are many elements taught to Maists that really should be laughed at openly. If we can laugh at our selves first before the opponent can is a good way towards getting the upper hand by first lightening up the situation, then walking away casually while they are in a good mood. 17. I really don't see these severities needed in this video, to become a maist, as this isn't necessary to damage oneself in the process, as this is counterproductive. I suspect there is something more here than what meets the eye, such as an initiation test or hazing, as if you do this then you belong with us, type of deal. They also look to me, as "training" to belong to a type of suicide squad, as in preparing for one way missions. Or if being caught and being tortured they would have been trained well enough as not to talk till the last breath. Hobbyist I think not, as they all seem destined for early retirement without benefits or funeral plans. This also goes to show, what people will do to belong to something, no matter how dangerous it can be. As the obvious obedience levels weren't normal behaviour between student and teacher, abuse like this is deeply disturbing and demoralizing, similar to an abusive parent, that claims to be strict like this, as to be cruel to be kind; "where cruel is cruel" no matter how it is disguised. As conformity has a way of introducing a person towards bonding with others and giving them a sense of security and family connection; which I believe these people perhaps have never had; which is now being exploited and is profiting the abusers.
  18. There are serious risks associated with many types of martial arts, how far are you willing to go? Extreme martial arts training and testing methods are often not the same as when they have been exported overseas perhaps you can see why https://youtu.be/Cx26sAs4Tzs Does this type of training really make a maist proficient in martial arts? Is this nesccecerily worth while allowing oneself to be put through these types of activities? How would you react if your CI was similar to this one?
  19. Drawing from nature is not the same as being more natural as you have taken to Imply. Please forgive my generalisations of karate and kung fu but their intents can most oftern be very different. Whereas there needn't be an intent to have an imaginary opponent with kung fu forms, where some are and many are not. As practicing kung ku with soft flowery movements for the health and harmony benefits are enough, while flowing with the rythems of nature, such as water and wind for example. As with the intent can be very different with karate, as usually striking movements in the katas are performed with full power. Where at the end of practicing kung fu forms the practioner feels invigorated and can feel connected with the universe, whilst playing with Yin/Yang energies. Whereas in karate the katas are likened to a full out fight with an imaginary opponent, to end it as abruptly as possible with decisive intent and actions. Of course there are many other reasons and things to consider about katas and kung fu forms as in aesthetics and functionality are often seen by the uninitiated. Of course it is the "intent" of the practioner that counts when practicing katas or kung fu forms that it matches reality; be it for fun, health or against an imaginary opponent. As katas and forms are full of history and hidden intents to pass on lessons from the past, which being family secrets and encoded patterns that needs a lot of time and effort towards understanding how they can be used effectively. Katas and forms can most certainly feel very good when practicing them, it really comes down to each individual's personality, needs and wants, to make them viable for fighting purposes or not. Organizing movements for combat is efficient in many ways to train with, but not always effective, if it becomes a clear substitute for sparring against another person. Personally I never want to loose the importance of katas and forms, while also never forgetting that there are limitations to over Indulging in them. However katas are excellent for giving explanations with, on how a system of movements and concepts can work together, also helping to remember them; that can be used to pass on from one generation to the next. Just like everything, there are limitations, katas and forms are not exempt, as flowery or robotic, natural and mechanical, we all have choices, just hopefully they are the right ones.
  20. The robotic nature of kata needs to be something discussed where we as humans are not mechanical. Having said that, like kung fu drawing inspiration from nature we can also find benefits from mechanics in a variety of ways; therefore cars, trains, wind mills and every thing else mechanical have a place in martial arts. Yet when talking mechanical there is usaully a metallic taste to the conversation, whereas in reality there are many types of elements such as oils, plastic, rubber, glass, air, fuels... contributing to this machine; including different types of engines. I like to think of kata as a type of machine where similar to on a factory floor, that can be a very dangerous place. As once wearing a tie was a part of the usual thing to wear, as to look smart, until getting caught up in the machine, causing death and serious injuries. As I look at katas as types of machines, on a factor floor, where the opponent will get pulled in and churned up if not careful; this is a very powerful option towards becoming effective for self defence. Also machines have their weaknesses, as putting a stick in to the front wheel of a bicycle will flip it, o so easily; which is the main principle of how karate works, one move with one end; as if every movement ends the fight, as if the first doesn't do the job the second one does and so on...
  21. Found something that looks like it could be useful
  22. If the premise that karate systems are based on either the stick and the whip principles and everything in between, then generalizing bunkai in katas, to explain them all will lead to patches of dead space and routines leading nowhere, where they become flash instead of reality https://youtu.be/d714Dxu6qEA Perhaps starting from where your chosen karate system preferences are, will help you discover if you should be like the stick or whip, or a combination of both as this will vary from one school to the next As katas contain everything starting from defending to many obvious things, where throwing and grappling can change as a closed fist can also be a grab if need be. Where as to use a grappling manoeuvre from a kata that have learned against a much larger opponent, is asking for trouble, therfore having options available and using the right one for the situation becomes important. Otherwise following a kata blindly without considering the best alternatives is putting oneself in danger. If a person isn't good at kicking, then this is where an alternative will work best, as the consequence could be that instead of landing a kick might be landing on one's back side. Also the alternatives can be anywhere from just enough force used for the opponent to release their hold or to using a disabilatating fatal strike (think of Miyagi in the karate kid, when was about to chop the throat of the bad sensei, then squeezes his nose and does a Honk!) In other words, make the bunkai fit your needs, search for the alternatives that work best for you and specifically you alone, making karate custom fitted towards protecting your health and wellbeing. Considering that your opponent is armed with a short or long bladed weapon, then adapting quickly is crucial, this is where practicing practical bunkai is important that always assumes that the opponent is armed where you are not. Where grappling with an armed opponent in a struggle there is no room for errors or wondering about bunkai possibilities. Bunkai informatinon should prepare the user with quick solutions as one second can change the outcome in an instant. Playing with bunkai for its historical roots and academic authenticity as interesting enough that it can be, just consider that this will take away from its purpose as a tool; as try this in MMA bout and see how far you get As bunkai should be training the nervous system of the user to be able to access appropriate applications without debate or hesitation, whereas the saying: "I do not hit, it hits all by itself"
