Many have maby noticed me asking a lot of questions regarding different things here at the forums. I bet even some posts are very stupid I hope it's not annoying to anyone, I do it just to learn stuff and not to achieve many posts. Anyway, I was wondering about Shootfighting. Since where I am going to start, we learn it for the sport. I have done sports-karate (which is Karate entirely for the sport) and it was not very good for self defence. Hence my question, is Shootfighting good for self defence? And this is probably a stupid question, but do you think Ken Shamrock (a world champion, saw him in some early UFC's.) is good at self defence on the street? Sorry if I ask too many plain dim questions. Thanks!

This is just something that has been in my mind for a bit... Sorry to you who do not like Royce Gracie, because this post concerns him and him only. I was just wondering if anyone know if he is capable of defending himself in a street-assault? Now don't get me wrong, I know he is great in one versus one combat, and he is great at escaping locks and such (I have his and Charles' book). But I doubt Royce is so stupid that he'd take a streetfight to the ground unless he would break the arm of the opponent in a matter of seconds. Especially if he was surrounded by two people. Does anyone know? Thanks!

BJJ and effectiveness

Well said. Although, I would prefer fighting on the street rather than getting a beating on the street. But that's just me though. -
Vale Tudo?
Anzie replied to Anzie's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I can't check out classes before the end of July. That's why I asked. -
A gym which has Muay Thai and Shootfighing and Grappling also teaches Vale Tudo. Now, I'm gonna start training on that gym I think. However, I'm curious what Vale Tudo is? I've heard the name, but I never really figured out of it. Is it effective in self defense as well? Thanks.

BJJ and effectiveness
Anzie replied to PhilM1's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
First of all, there is no best martial art. However, some has succeeded more than others in tournaments, for example UFC, IFC, Extreme Fighting and so on. BJJ is effective because most MA does not practice groundwork (as far as I know). How effective is your karate, tae kwon do, boxing, muay thai on the ground? Not saying any of those are ineffective on the ground, just that an experienced grappler (or BJJ'er) will do much better. (I beat a black belt taekwondoka with 7 years of experience in a grappling match, I had no more than two months of grappling behind me.) And when performing an armlock (having his arm in a position so you can break it with ease) or choking him, ever how tough you are, breaking your arm as brutally as many techniques will break them, it's a world of pain you don't wanna enter. Sorry to burst your bubble though, but in streetfighting grappling is not very effective. Why? Because in most streetfights, there is an opportunity for having more than one opponent, and taking the fight to the ground when that happens, is not very smart. My two cents. -
When it comes to Gracie (which I happen to like alot:)), I actually think he could've won versus some of the bigger guys out there (as far as I know, he challenged Mike Tyson officially, but Tyson refused). The reason for me to belive so is Gracie's great dodgin ability (I'm talking about Royce now. Haven't seen the others as much as I've seen him). Did anyone see the fight in UFC II (I think) versus Patrick Smith? Pat is extremely strong and a very good (kick)boxer, but didn't land many hits on Royce for some reason. Of course, this is just something I reckon, as I haven't seen a submission fighter vs. a boxer in professional heavyweight. And no, I don't dislike boxing I think it honestly rocks, especially on the street, because most streetfights are fist-fights. Besides, a good boxer could easily take out two average guys, and a submission fighter could probably not (a ground-submission-fighter that is). My two cents.

For some reason, I almost all the time get caught in a scarf-hold while training (at the dojo or with some friends). The only thing I can think of is pressing my arm against his Adams Apple, which is a bit helpful, but not very. What would you lot do if caught in one? /Anzie (going to London for 5 days)

ATM I'm doing grappling, and I really like it. At the same dojo I practice sports karate as well. Here we do learn do fight in tournaments and we only learn (mostly) tournament-techniques. I'm looking for an addition to grappling in order to have good self defence. Sports karate I can do for free in addition to grappling, and I'm considering to start Shootfighting when I'm 18, in a year. (It's a limit for some reason) Until then, should I continue with karate for self defence or do something else meanwhile. Boxing perhaps? Note that I'm looking for effective self defence.

I posted a little something about my form of karate a bit earlier, but I thought I'd put another view on it. Sports Karate is karate training for kumite only. No katas and equal. Is this as effective as "ordinary" karate on the street for instance?

Pardon me for asking this newbie-question, but briefly, what does a rear naked-choke look like? Is it when you lie on top of the guy and have his throat resting in your arm? Like.. an upside-down guilotine? -
Takk, superleeds Bare in mind everyone, my intention with this post was not boxing vs karate, I just mentioned boxing as an example. Could've mentioned Thai Boxing or Hapkido for that matter. My question was just really if it's effective in a streetfight or similar.

WE spar with leg kicks Sparring is almost everything we do. That, and reaction-excercises and punches/kick/sweeps. No kata for us.

I've heard from some people that ie boxing is a much better way to defend yourself on the street, and that karate is not going to help you very much on your self defense? Any comments?

That's what I do. I asked my sensei what kind of karate we do, and he answered that it's Sports Karate. That means we're not doing any katas what so ever, and we train only for kumite (contests). Although this may sound a bit harsh, the teacher is very skilled and kind, and I learn alot from every class. Have anyone else heard of this form of Karate? In that case, have any Japanese words on what style it may be?

Doh, missed the introductions forum I guess that's the punishment for being a forum newbie, huh?

Me being a newbie to these forums, so I just stopped by to say hello. This forum will be a nice one to read while at school having echonomics. Not that anyone really cares, but I do some Karate and grappling (freshly started). I train 4 times a week, 2 times karate, 2 times grappling. Been doing JuJitsu and grappling for a month or so (means about 7 hours of JuJitsu), but I converted to Karate. So, who's the typical forumtroll to watch out for?
