New to Karate and have a question about my Gei fitting.
tommarker replied to Steinhauers's topic in Equipment and Gear
as long as you aren't stepping on them... I've seen some older pics where they look like capri pants -
Video of sparring... now that brings back a fond memory. I was sparring a very athletic youth at a tournament last year. I somehow managed to elude his kicks and stick him enough times to win 3-2. Turns out his GF videotaped the whole affair, and he felt that there were points he scored which didn't get counted. He actually interrupted the judge, and brought the video to him to try and convince him.... The judge agreed to watch the video AFTER the matches were over. The judge said "it looks like he dodged it, AND scored another point on you. Are you sure this is what you want to base your complaint on?" I guess my point is that sometimes people just insist on seeing what they want to see

Bit Cha Ki (Diagonal Kick)
tommarker replied to tommarker's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
That combo makes my hip joint hurt just thinking about it... Therefore, I'll introduce it into line drill on Sunday -
no no, we should spend more time telling him how right he is!!!

That sounds like a really neat thing to do for students!

bouncers, police officers, prison guards, could all easily get into 20 fights. -
I will also add that 1. no one has ever even passed out in our class in the 6 years i've been there, much less died from the perils of dehydration. 2. our teacher is not an evil monster. 3. just because we have heirarchy, doesn't mean that we don't have mutal respect of each other.

we rarely break for water, but we're also all college kids and - for the most part -- smart enough to stop when the symptoms of overtraining kick in. we all also know that in the summer, there is no A/C and the humidity goes way up... so we all take the time to drink plenty during the day. We've found classes in the winter are actually harder because it is so dry.

Well... Clearly HIS studio ISN'T that way. If he doesn't like the rules, he should QUIT. End of story. Not all instructors are as forward thinking and enlightened as yours, I guess.

Bit Cha Ki (Diagonal Kick)
tommarker replied to tommarker's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
For some real fun, in the latest issue of "Journal of Asian Martial Arts" there is an article on Korean arts showing someone performing a jumping diagonal kick -
http://community.webshots.com/photo/10686334/10686588qrxpCWzuXx (for visual reference) Is this a popular kick in your style? It seems to be fairly unique to the Korean styles, but I would imagine that there are a few other schools who have picked it up along the way. It seems like one of those kicks you can either do really well, or not at all. For me, I have a hard time getting my hips to turn enough to strike with the ball of my foot effectively. Now if I was just to use the instep, no problems. I have found this to be a handy kick in point sparring, especially when they think they are close enough to negate your back leg. You can really get it up there and pop the opposite side really quickly. It's also a nasty low kick. Any other thoughts?

You make it sound as though you do it as a form of recreation... "i started fighting." Is that your intent? -
And if that is how he feels, he should leave.

maybe you should hydrate yourself more throughout the day. Instead you sound like a lazy snotty teenage kid with some physical talent who probably drinks too much soda. Don't like my presumptions about you? Perhaps you should drop the ones you direct at others. If you don't like the water break rule, cope with it, or get out.

If someone were to break into your house.........

Please tell me that you have real kama and not aluminum blades with lightening holes -
Are you wearing steel toed shoes? Kicking things HARD with your toes still hurts even when wearing shoes. Or maybe I'm just a wuss. Either way, I still strike with the ball of the foot on front kick.

with the right spirit and training, you should just be able to carve a sword out of an oar on the way to the duel and make due
-
Rich... probably an editor who didn't know better. That's gotta be a kama.
-
informer... I'll remember that the next time someone bashes TKD/TSD. "at least the Koreans had Tae Kyun" Are you suggesting that Japan had no style of empty hand fighting before Funakoshi?
-
It sounds like Shiroma is describing the kama. Perhaps it was an editing error? A better book on nunchaku usage is in "Nunchaku and Sai" by Ryusho Sakagami.

Isn't real Okinawan Karate really a watered down, bastardized version of Shaolin White Crane?

The Dying Art
tommarker replied to Tang So Do Master's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
TKD and TSD are the same in the way that shorin-ryu and goju-ryu are the same.
